Rules for 9 April 2004

Martin Lund, sent 11 April 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Onward and upward - or something like that.

So, here are your Rules for Friday, April 9, 2004.

Shosuro Technique and Ieshige

Concerning the Lion Bloodspeaker. Since a ranged attack that targets Ieshige must be one higher to kill him (since his trait increases his Force by one) will a personality using Shosuro Technique that targets Ieshige have Force equal to Ieshige's before the action or will Shosuro Technique also include his Force bonus in its calculations?

Shosuro Technique doesn't care about any numbers until it starts generating effects. By the time it generates any effects, Ieshige already has his +1 Force, so the copy-cat will get that adjusted value.

No Mercy Questons

I know this was all covered a while back but could someone refresh my mermory. Does this card allow another player to give you an honor loss and put you out the game if you hit -14. As long as you have caused yourself a honor loss since the event resolved.

Yes, someone else can be the cause of you dropping below -14, so long as you have caused yourself any honor losses previously.

Removing a dishonored personality from the game : honor loss ?

I want a confirmation : when I remove my dishonored personality from the game, do I lose honor ?

You only lose honor on Destruction / Death, not removal from the game. Refuge of the Three Sisters, for instance, will not cause you an honor loss if you feed it with a dishonored personality.

questions

if a personality is bowed, he is 0 force,

Whoa. Hold on there. He is not 0 Force.

He and his attached cards, however, do not contribute force to the units total, so typically a bowed Personality indicates a 0 Force UNIT. The Personality himself still has his normal Force value (printed force plus tokens and any other current effects).

but if he has a weapon that says, +2/+2, that still applies?

The Weapon bonus applies to the Personality, but the Personality contributes no Force to the Unit.

secondly, can you "destiny has no secrets" or "strength of purity" to a bowed personality?

Sure you can. The Personality still contributes 0 Force to his unit though.

finally, when performing a range attack, at a bowed personality, are they considered 0 force, or still printed force?

Neither. He has his regular current Force. Nothing tricky.

Ranged Attacks target cards, not units.

Oblivion's Gate and Spirit Guide

Can i use the action on Oblivion's Gate to destroy a follower that is not in the battle i'm resolving? While in a battle can I bow Spirit Guide to unbow a shugenja in my fief?

No to both question. Neither will satisfy the Rule of Relavence since they do not come from a card or token in the battle, create a card or token in the battle, or directly affect a card or token in the battle or the battle itself.

Isawa's House Guard + Agasha Chieh xp. is very effective for casting Spells without being at the Battle at any other time.

Spirit Guide is not as effective at that trick and Oblivions Gate is powerless to stop the unbridled power of Chieh xp.'s Yamato Cannon (Chieh, House Guard, Celestial Sword, Kuro's Fire, Roll the closing credits).

Bones and Rats!

Just a quick question that occured to me...I'm not sure whether this has been answered or not but can Bones of the Fallen target Ratling tribes since the Ratlings don't exactly have family names?

Tribes do not qualify as family names. You are looking for things like "Moto" and "Tsuno" and "Daigotsu." "Green-Green-White Tribe" isn't going to cut it.

Kwanchai, targetting, wedge, and pit of blood

Since Kwanchai doesn't target, can he prevent a wedged personality from dying?

Yes.

If so, can you put a Bloodspeaker under Pit of Blood after wedge?

No, you can not. Sometimes (typically battle resolution) multiple eligable personalities will die at the same time and you much choose between them, hence targeting. If an Action targets sometimes, then it targets all the time. Pit of Blood always targets.

And that looks to be it for Friday, April 9, 2004.

If I missed any of your non-Hidden City questions, please repost them with [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get to them at the first opportunity.

Thanks,
