A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Alright, and here come the Rules for Friday, April 2, 2004

Does rend the soul kill your army if undefended?

If I attack a province with some dude that doesn't have enough force to take a province, my opponent doesn't defend, then I play rend the soul on my dude, does he die if I don't get him out of there?

In order to win, lose, or tie a battle, you need TWO armies in the Battle during resolution. If one side does not show up, or is eliminated before resolution, than there is no win, loss, or tie. You won't be destroyed.

Force of Will

If, say, Don Kurohito is dishonored. and Force of Will is cast on him, does he die from having 0 chi, or does it take the printed value of his PH?

Unless a card refers to the printed stat, it affects the current stat.

His current PH was 0. His Chi is set to match that. His Chi is 0. He dies.

Additionally, if he does die from this effect, does his controller lose 5 honor, from his printed PH, or 6 from his modified PH?

- Geoff

His "modified PH" is zero. That's one of the properties of being Dishonored. Being dishonored sets an ultimate ceiling of "0" on the Personality. You can set his PH to 6, but being dishonored drops it right back to 0. (Diamond Edition Rules, page 87)

Anyway, his controller loses 5 honor, the printed value on the card, as per page 88 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook.

YU x Kwanchai xp

Hey, rule guys, Kwanchai xp can save a pep from death to yu?

Yu happens during Battle Resolution (Diamond Edition Rulebook, p93). Kwanchai xp can be used during Battle Resolution (Accumulated Rulings).

By reading these sources, I see no reason why Kwanchai can't work against Yu.

But remember that Yu works out sequentially (Accumulated Rulings) so if you save someone with Kwanchai and there is more Yu yet to come, that personality may yet be destroyed by Yu.

Flee the Darkness vs. Wedge

If I "Wedge" one of my personalities, and my opponent attempts to do something mean to him, can I "Flee the Darkness"? Or does that count as targeting the Wedged unit?

Thanks!

- Brewing Tea

Flee the Darkness targets the caster and the Action is it trying to cancel. It does not target your Personality at all. The only thing that needs to target the Personality is the Action you want to cancel.

Shosuro Haru and Shosuro Technique question

If I have shosuro Haru out:

Maho Reaction: After entering a duel or assigning or moving to a battle, give a –1F/–1C Poison token to a opposing Personality.

and he is challenged to a duel, can I Play shosuro technique:

Reaction: When one of your Personalities enters a duel against a Personality with higher Chi, raise your Personality’s Chi to equal the other’s Chi.

This would raise his chi to equal his opponents who is higher, could he then use his own ability making him one chi higher, and then strike and when the duel. If not why?

thanks

hibachab

Shosuro Technique is played "when" you enter the duel. Haru's ability is played "after" you enter the duel. You always have to play Shosuro Technique before Maru does his Poison Token thing. Yes, that should let you immediately call strike against your challenger and defeat him, barring any other Reaction tricks.

I'm also a fan of Shosuro Higatsuku, Shosuro Technique, and Kakita Dojo. If only I could recycle Shosuro Technique ...

OK, and that takes care of that. As always, don't be surprised if I skipped a question regarding a card that is not released yet. You're going to need to speak to Jeff about that. If I missed your question otherwise, please repost the question with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get to it at the first opportunity.

Thanks,
