Rules for 1 April 2004 (no jokes)
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Alright, and now that is safely past the date ...
The Rules for Thursday, April 1, 2004
For Jeff or Marty
Flee the Darkness vs. Overwhelmed? I am not targeting his peep if I play overwhelmed? correct? Flee cannot be played in response..
Man, there should be an Overwhelmed Mini-FAQ somewhere. We get more questions on this card than the Egg! :)
Yes, a player can not Flee the Darkness against their opponent's Overwhelmed. Overwhelmed makes each Personality's respective controller do all the targeting for that personality. Flee the Darkness requires that someone target another player's personality, which never happens due to any effect of Overwhelmed.
Suspend terrain vs. Desperate Wager
Can DW striaghten a unit which has been bowed from ST?
phil
Desperate Wager wins in this case. It says "including those that can not straighten," and those cards affected by Suspended Terrain qualify.
FoYK x Reactions
Based on the rule above I have a question. If a reaction get canceled with FoYK it can be used again?
Yes, assuming you are capable of playing it again. It the Reaction gets canceled, it does not count against any number of maximum uses (see "Canceling Actions and Negating Effects" in the Diamond Edition Rulebook)
However, you don't get Canceled cards back, or their costs refunded. If you were to bow Akodo Rokuro to use his Reaction, and it got hit with Fall on Your Knees, you'd need to unbow Rokuro before you could pay the cost again. If your Tsuruchi Technique got canceled, you'd need to fish it out of your Discard pile somehow before playing it again.
However, in the case of a Reaction like that of Akodo Yobi, where there is no cost, you could easily play it again.
Some reactions Fall is good again. Some other reactions ... not so much.
A timing question
<SNIP To Do What We Must vs. Kyuden Ikoma>
Got this one in a prior digest (March 31). Sorry for the wait.
A New Path (Monk-Samurai traits)
Hello, I would like to know if a personality can be 'Samurai' and 'Monk'.
Well, Togashi Mitsu / Jusai would be in a lot of trouble if you couldn't be both a Samurai and a Monk, now wouldn't he? ;)
I mean, i use the card "A New Path" on a Samurai personality and he gain the trait 'Monk', he is still a 'Samurai' too ? It would be sade if he is both. Like the picture on the card or in stories ( if i m not wrong ), they choose a new path, forgeting bushido codes, cuting their hairs etc ...
Thx you for any anwser Sincerly
A New Path just adds the Monk trait. You can still be a Samurai, Shugenja, or (strangely) an Oni or Ratling. You just go all wimpy and can't assign to attack anymore (card text).
That must be what happens when you listen to one too many crazy sermons from a Scorpion Clan Monk (Shosuro Chian).
I'm sorry, but the last person you go to when you need to spill your guts to a monk is a "retired" Scorpion. I don't think anyone ever accused Shiba Kai of being too bright though.
Oh, and Seppuku is part of having the Samurai or Courtier traits. Having extra "job" traits (Monk, Shugenja, etc) does not prevent that.
Kyuden Ikoma vs Castle of the Wasp
Sorry, this was from a few weeks ago, but it took me a while to get around to posting the question. Rokuro might have been in the battle, or I might have bowed someone else, or it might have been pre-errata and I'm just remembering it wrong due to the rules change. That part doesn't really matter.
OK, I see where you are going with this:
"If my Ranged Attack with Tsuruchi Nobumoto gets canceled, what happens?"
Well, first of all, Kyuden Ikoma has to cancel the action before it produces any effects, which is well before it send Nobumoto home and triggers Right Hand. Hence, if it is canceled, Nobumoto will still be at the Province AND you won't have had a chance to use the Right Hand.
To the second point, yes, you did use your Stronghold's trait. No, it doesn't matter because the Action was canceled. The next time you try to use it, the Stronghold isn't going to find an instance where you produced a Ranged Attack without bowing (that RA effect was never produced), so its Once Per Turn limit isn't met yet.
Normally when KI (or anything that cancels) cancels an action that requires bowing the guy, he stays bowed, just as canceling overwhelmed still destroys the player's dude. If it never happened, and he gets to do it again, was there any point to using KI's ability?
You don't get any costs refunded when an action is canceled. That's why the personality does not unbow. In this case, however, the Personality never bowed in the first place.
And yes, using Kyuden Ikoma to Cancel an Action that effectively has no cost IS a bad play - a boneheaded move I've pulled myself from time to time.
The Egg of Pan Ku and Tch'tch Warrens
I did some checking in the Rules Archive, and I wanted to be sure I'm clear on a few things. Once played, the Egg of Pan Ku is permanently a personality, even if it leaves play, but it also retains its status as a Fate card. This allows Tch'tch Warrens to retreive it from a Dynasty discard pile, should the Egg be killed as a personality, correct?
However, the Tch'tch Warrens player would have no way of playing the Egg from his hand, since it is a Personality, correct?
Also, as a Personality, the Egg would not have a defined focus value, making it effectively a 0, correct?
Leon! Get off my li- er ... wait a minute. You're not Leon, are you?
Oh, in that case, yes, you are pretty much spot-on.
And one last question on Tch'tch Warrens: Would Open Warfare and Amnesia have any effect on cards that have already been taken from another player's discard pile? I would think not, as the action had already been used and is simply having an ongoing effect.
Thanks, ~Brian
Eliminating the source of an Action or Ability won't stop the effects it has already produced, so you are correct again.
Alright. That's it for April 1, 2004. Please remember that as a general rule I'm not going to field card-specific questions about preview cards. I'm going to wait until they are released. Also, if I missed your question from April 1 in this digest and someone didn't reply to it in-thread, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get to it at the first opportunity.
Thanks,
