A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

OK, my second stab a a rules digest post. Here we go.

Rules for Sunday, March 28, 2004

Kuon Q

Kuon's Battle action says an OPPOSING PLAYER. Does that mean that if he's defending a province and there is no units in the opposing army, he cannot use his ability? I figured he can since it says opposing PLAYER, not unit.

You can use his ability all you want, but only players who control at last one card opposing Hida Kuon xp3 are considered to be "an opposing player," and thus have to discard a card to this effect.

Question about unrequited love, shame dirty politics combo vs shadowlands

Just wondering a couple of things. Firstly does unrequited love force a shadlowands player to dishonour a personality as they cannot gain the 1 honour from bowing?

Hm ... good question. I had to go digging on this one.

Back in October of last year, Zen got this question:

"> What happens when you target a shadowlands players' personality with:

unrequited love, stern repremand, etal.

Any player may choose any option (precedent: Writ of Peace), provided that option doesn't have Honor loss as a cost."

So evidently the Shadowlands player can choose the "bow to gain 1 honor" option, even though he knows that he won't be gaining 1 honor. I guess it is the same logic as to why they can choose a "lose X honor" option from effects even though they know they can't lose honor.

secondly if I play shame on the dishonoured shadowlands personality and then dirty politics, do I gain the 7 honour? as the DP happens before the shame, so losing 7 honour does not become an issue. thanks.

Nope. You can't gain any. Dirty Politics is a Reaction. "You cannot gain or lose Honor" is a trait. The Trait always kicks in before Dirty Politics, so there is no gain to steal.

"Traits and continuous effects precede Reactions (e.g., Tetsubo vs. Kakita Technique). [ZF, 23 November 1999]" (Accumulated Rulings)

You can still redirect your Honor losses at the Horde player, however, so it isn't always a completely dead card in that match-up.

Tsuruchi tech, Ishige rule question

if tsuruchi tech is my first action can it kill Ishige? does ishige gain +1 force before the range attach resolives or does the range attack kill him before he gains +1 force.

Ieshige's +1 Force bonus kicks in before Tsuruchi Technique produces its effects. So he'll be at +1 F before he gets hit by the Ranged 3 attack, which normally won't kill him.

OK, that's looks like everything. If I missed someone's question, I'm truly sorry. Please repost your question with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
