Danjuro vs. Sneak Attack
Can Shiba Danjuro's reaction be used to cancel Ambush?
Danjuro can't cancel anything. He can only change an action's target.
blade of truths and focus values
blade of truths, reaction when entering a duel name a focus value, the opponant can not play focuses of that value or reactions during a duel. primal rage, when used as a focus value for a shadowlands or creature set the focus to the personalites force plus 2. has a 2 focus value. let your spirit guide you focus value 0. when used as a focus card or as a tactition card set the focus value to the personalities personal honor +3. so when i use blade of truths and name a card, for primal rage do i need to name a 2 or do i need to name the force of the personality plus 2. same goes for let your spirit guide you. also if any one can post focus cards that have variable focus values and how to name them with the blade of truths, it would be very handy. thanks!
Blade of Truths prevents focusing using the value of the card before it gets focused. You would need to name "0" to prevent Let Your Spirit Guide You, for instance. [archive]
Rules Question - Wedge and Ogre Hordes
With T'k in play if I play Ogre Hordes and Wedge, what does T'k end up as, 6F or 8F?
It seems to me it should be 8F because of timing, but I'm not what you'd call a rules expert.
Delayed Terrains resolve immediately before the Battle Action Segment ends. Wedge doubles Force when the Resolution Segment begins, which is after that. T'k would be 8F.
question
If I have In Time of War, and my oponent has, for example, 10 PH, what happens when he gains 3 honor each for 2 personalities?
Does he gain 6, but ends the turn in 15, or that he gain only 3, ending the turn in 13, since he can`t gain 3 more, because he would be 16?
His Honor can't go above 15 that turn. No individual gains are chopped off or negated. The cap is only applied to the total.
ambush+wind reaction
Question: If my opponent plays an Ambush, am I allowed to use either the Underhand's Reaction to stop the opposing personality from assigning,
Yes. The other player must then assign a different Personality to ambush yours if at all possible.
or the Right Hand's ability to stop my personality's assignation to battle?
No. Assignment and movement are mutually exclusive.
Honor Victory with Scorpions and Shadowlands?
I have just started to play Legend of the 5 Rings and a couple of my friends, whom have been playing the game longer than I have by far, want to think there are special rules about for Shadowlands and maybe Scorpions on Honor Victory. Basically, my friends say that they cannot win an Honor Victory and there is NO minimum Honor penalty for them (where the rules say at -19 you lose).
I can find nothing about this in the Diamond Edition rulebook. Can anyone help me out and point me in the right direction? Thank you so much.
Special conditions like this will be on the Strongholds themselves. There are no rules built into the game for Family Honor workind differently for some Factions.
Dark Wings + Nairu no Oni
My friend had 3 units out...
1 had a Dark Wings, and one was Nairu no Oni and the other was a random oni
He assigned 2 units (1 dark wins and NOT the oni) to my right most province, his Nairu stayed home...
He then chose to resolve my left most province first, in that battle sequence he bowed Nairu (Battle: Bow Nairu no Oni to move another Oni Personality from one battle to another) to move his other oni in the battle to that province, he then used dark wings to move his other unit to that province...
At the time I pulled him up because Nairu's action is battle, but now that I think about it, I think it's legal.
Can someone give me an answer.
His use of Nairu no Oni was legal. It gave him a unit in the current battle, so it satisfied both rules of Presence and Relevanct, and Nairu no Oni does not have any text requiring him to be in the battle itself to use its action.
Rules Question (for the Open environment)
My question is about The Longest Night. I was playing with a ninja deck the other day, and the question came up on how long the second effect of the event lasts.
The Longest Night says, "Until your straighten phase two turns after this one, any effect which would negate a Kolat or Ninja action is cancelled. Kolat and Ninja cards have their gold costs reduced by two."
So, how long does the cost reduction last?
Same duration as the first sentence.
Shinden Horiuchi
"Your Spells are considered to be both Spells and Items."
Can you recycle spells with Yasuki Trader? Or are they only items while in play?
No; yes.
Various rules questions
Questions guys:
1. Is Shosuro technique (the battle part of it) a force bonus or more along the lines of a change in the printed force until the end of the turn? In other words will In Search of the Future remove it?
Nothing changes printed numbers without saying so explicly. Shosuro Technique changes the total Force. It's a bonus unless you targeted an opposing Personality with lower or equal Force to yours.
2. I attack with a shugenja with the stick and Kuro's. My opponent blocks with lots of people. I Sneak Attack, then Speed of the Plains giving me two actions. I use the first to Rend the Soul and use the second to Kuro's and destroy his entire army. Is resolution still a tie even though he has no personalities in his army?
A battle cannot be a win, loss, or tie unless there is at least one unit on both sides during resolution.
3. My opponent attacks provinces 1,2,3 and 4. I can only block 1, 2 and three. He does the fourth battle first and Strategic Crossroads. Can I use my Akodo's Grave there even if I have no presence?
No. It is a Battle action.
4. Is it true that if honor loss is the cost of an action (as it is in refusing Mai Exp challenge) that a Shadowlands player can't take that action.
Correct. If your total Family Honor doesn't drop by the full amount required, you haven't paid the cost.
In other words is it true that a Shadowlands player can't refuse Mai Exp challenge?
It is true.
5. The Black Heart confuses the hell out of me. I'm playing Crane and my opponent is playing Shadowlands. I have less honor than he has force at the start of my turn. Can I still lobby for the favor or am I only allowed to lobby once my family honor exceeds his printed force?
Check his Force against your Force. If his is higher than yours, then treat his Force as his Honor whenever either of you wants to lobby.
Mizuochi vs. Seppun sensei
Can a player who has Seppun Sensei in play take the action of Kitsuki Mizuochi Exp. when it is unknown if the top card of a deck is a Kolat, Ninja, or Assassin card or not?
Yes.
Can the action be taken if it is known that it couldn't cause an Honor loss to the opponent (eg. various SL strongholds, Dark Path of Shadow, top card revealed)?
Yes.
Danjuro vs Helm of thunder...
Hi, Stupid question i'm almost shure this doesn't work... But... Danjuro can redirect to him the action on Helm of Thunder?
Only if Danjuro has less Chi than the person using the Helm and has somehow acquired the Shugenja trait.
Yasuki question
Is yasuki traders ability an open or limited? It doesn't say on the card.
Limited, by errata. (There is no rule that all actions are Open by default. Someone is making stuff up. An action without a type is an error. It doesn't default to anything.)
Dishonor Rule question
During a discution with other players, this question came :
Is dishonor a "permanent" change for the Egg of Pan Ku for example.
Yes.
My point is no, because it can be altered until the end of the game, as can be possession of a weapon or other things.
"Permanent" doesn't mean unreversible. "Permanent" is only a shorter way of saying "until the end of the game".
Comming into play?
For the purposes of House of Tao, would casting this Kiho be considered bringing a shadowlands card into play?
Playing With Madness Kiho Maho Limited: Bow one of your Shugenja. That Shugenja permanently gains +2F/+2C and the Shadowlands and Bloodspeaker traits, and permanently loses all current innate abilities. Any Spell or Kiho cast by that Shugenja for the rest of the game gains the Maho trait. Lose 2 Honor
No. You are bringing a Maho Kiho card into play by playing the Kiho. Giving the Shadowlands trait to a card already in play does not count as playing one.
Rend the Soul Question
I was at a tournament recently and heard that a ruling was passed down somewhere that a unit targetted by Rend the Soul and then moved to a different battle could not take the province at it's new battle.
Is this true?
No.
Couple of questions
Togashi Shozo Dragon Clan Monk - Tattooed Once per turn, before you draw a card, instead look at a number of cards on the top of your Fate deck equal to one plus the number of Elemental Rings you control and draw one of those of your choice. Leave the remaining cards in their original order.
I have 1 Togashi Shozo in play and 2 Rings in play. Imperial Ambassadorship resolves. How many cards do I look at?
You will draw three from the Event. Before any one of those three, you may use Shozo to look at your next three still on the deck and draw one of those instead of the top card. You can potentially see up to five cards if you use Shozo's effect on the last draw.
What if I have 2 Togashi Shozo's and 2 Rings in play and Imperial Ambassadorship resolves? Can I use both effects?
Yes, but it doesn't help you see any more cards than using only one Shozo.
During my end phase I have 2 Togasho Shozo's and 2 Rings in play. Can I look at 3, 5 or 6 cards?
Can you use Shozo while he's bowed?
Yes. It's not an action.
Moto Latomu Unicorn Clan Samurai . Cavalry Latomu costs 1 less Gold if your Wind is Akodo Kaneka. Reaction: After an action moves Latomu into a battle, bow Latomu for a Ranged 4 attack, or make a Ranged 2 Attack without bowing.
Fall On Your Knees Reaction: Cancel a Reaction during a Battle Action Segment.
Excerpt from Cancelling Actions from the Diamond Edition rule book page 72: If an action or Event is canceled, the entire thing is stopped. It does not successfully resolve. The attempt to use it does not count against any maximum number of uses per game/turn/battle/etc., although for actions, the failed attempt still counts as its player's one opportunity to act before play passes to the left. No costs are refunded. A canceled Action card goes to the discard pile.
Is there any point in FOYK's Latomu's reaction?
Not really.
Can't he just immediately use it again?
Yes.
Flee the Darkness Kiho Reaction: When another player targets one of your Personalities with a Battle action or with an Open action during a battle, bow one of your Shugenja or Monks to cancel that action.
Castle of the Wasp Once per battle, you may target the current Province with a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to lower its Strength by the Attack 's strength. Once per turn, one of your Mantis Clan Personalities need not bow to produce a single or combined Ranged Attack that targets opposing cards.
Canceling question also. If someone uses the not to bow trait from CotW, and the ranged attack gets cancelled (ie, flee) can they later use that trait again?
Yes. They haven't made a ranged attack without bowing yet.
Mirabu Question.
If Shiba Mirabu Exp. 2 is targeted with Birth and Death [Gains +1C and Shugenja permanently], can he bow to give himself a force and chi bonus?
You mean to give himself a Force bonus equal to his Force plus Chi? Yes.
Also, what about bowing and destroying to destroy an opposing follower or personality?
Yes.
question about lobby
If I have a non-Daigotsu wind, lobbying is a political action and I must bow a personality with more than 0 ph. If I bring black heart of the empire with Doji Tanitsu exp, is lobbying still a political action?
No.
must I bow a personality with more than 0 ph, a shadowlands regardless of ph, or any of them?
You must bow a Shadowlands Personality regardless of Personal Honor.
rules questions.
If you can gain honor from "fields of the sun" even if the province is being destroyed, what happens if a player has resolved strange assembly, and at the same time he is loosing his last province, he also gets to 48 honor?.
Active player decides whether Province destruction or Honor gain happens first.
But are army destruction and province destruction strictly simultaneous.?
Yes. This answer is in the very next words after your quote above stops.
Actions You Know Will Fail
Jeff Alexander made a ruling that when Iuchiban was targeted by Vigilant Witch Hunter for the second time the person was given the option to give away Iuchiban or kill him. Iuchiban has the Will Only Join Shadowlands trait. Jeff ruled that you could just choose the option you knew would fail (the giving away) and that it would be legal.
I did? When? I distinctly recall some very angry responses about how vulnerable Iuchiban was to this card, which makes no sense if it were powerless against him like this.
The other player must do one of those two things, and if he can't give you Iuchiban, he must destroy him. It's the standard way cards like Vigilant Witch-Hunter work. Do you still have the post where I said otherwise?
By extension the Hida Ishi targeting by Shosuro Maru is legal as well (there being no stopping you from taking actions stopped automatically by card text). Unless he changes the ruling on Iuchiban and Vigilant Witch Hunter I am sticking with that.
I hope you change your mind, then.
I have been informed that it was ruled that Hida Sozen cannot be the one unit to die for Pick Your Battles (and subsequently not die from his trait).
Pick Your Battles cannot be played at all if Sozen is in the battle and isn't going to die because the trigger for Pick Your Battles isn't there.
Errata on Pick Your Battles makes the destruction a part of the battle not a card effect (The one Personality destroyed is destroyed by the battle, not by Pick Your Battles. [ZF, 3 September 2003]). The only valid reasoning behind that set of rulings would be for the destruction to be a cost. But on the card it is clearly not worded that way.
There is no errata to Pick Your Battles. Zen's ruling is a clarification. The card is ambiguous whether the one unit that doesn't move is destroyed directly by the action or only because it isn't saved from the destruction that was already going to happen to it.
1. Your opponent bows Shosuro Maru for her ability. Can you target Hida Ishi with the effect and have it negated (automatically)?
No.
2. Why no Sozen/Pick Your Battles if it isn't a cost?
Lack of trigger makes the Reaction illegal.
To do what we must
I would assume, then, that this also applies with Ranged Attacks. I.E. A ranged attack of any strength would kill a bowed personality (given, obviously, that he's a legal target for the RA). Correct?
No.
Being bowed changes how you calculate a whole unit's total Force, but it does not change the Force values of any individual cards in the unit.
Ranged attacks care about the Force of indivudual cards. To Do What We Must cares about the unit's total Force. Bowing affects the latter quite drasticly. It doesn't matter for the former at all.

Ok, where in the rulebook and or applied rulings is this definition of the word "your" found (I'm just trying to get a handle on it as it makes no sense to me)? The way Shinden Houriuchi reads in English would lead most reasonable people to believe that the text applies to all such spell cards, not simply those in play (which would have been the case if the trait had read "Your spells in play are considered both Spells and Items"). As it reads, all my spells whether in my deck my hand my discard or in play are items, which is still only a marginal ability. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Styer" <goneincognitotoo@yahoo.com> To: <L5r-ccg@alderac.com> Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 10:49 PM Subject: [L5R-CCG] Shinden Horiuchi
We would very much appreciate if posters could avoid sending messages like this.
What use is that trait then? The Unicorn unteractions with Items are generally in terms of fetching them from discard, hand or deck?
There are several Unicorn Clan Personalities with abilities that involve Items in play. And you can expect more in the future, since Items are one of their themes.
