Rules for 1 December 2003, Part 2
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
More on Ambush
then may I play ambush without units or/and whitout units in the 'opposing side'?
No; there must still be legal targets.
I suppose this 'non standard rule' apply to all cards with more than one effect. Ie, if the second (or latter) effect of an action targets, you must resolve the first effect before choose the target for the second effect, right?
I wouldn't go so far as to make that any kind of general rule. It could happen, depending on particular card text.
I suppose DON'T apply to actions that target something as a cost and target something as an effect. Ie, if and action target as a cost and as an effect, both targets must be selected before cost are paid, (except for cards like ambush), right?
Generally, yes.
I still don't understand why, in the Ring of the Void, the action "Limited: Reveal Ring of the Void from your hand and bow one of your Personalities" is a cost and no an effect.
Why does it matter? I'm not sure it is either a cost or an effect; I'd call it a trigger.

So, if say, a Shinden Horiuchi player bows a Shugenja to cast a Spell-Item, can that player bow the Spell-Item to cast itself again on the same turn?
No. "That Shungena may not cast spells" (Stronghold text).
Zen, this doesn't sound right to me.
That's because it's the wrong answer. I misread the question. Sorry. The answer should have been, "Yes."

Is it correct to say that you can't use the [Unicorn] Marketeer to draw a card when putting a Spell into play with this Stronghold?
Yes (card text).
Jeff already ruled the reverse on this back on 11/14.
Into the Archive the original ruling goes, then...

can you use the 2nd ability on the Right Hand of the Emperor in the same way against Encircled Terrain?
Yes.
Barley Farm and Crystal Mine
Can the Reaction on Barley Farm, and the actual Barley Farm itself, be used in conjunction with a Crystal Mine to produce 7G? In other words, can I bow the Barley Farm and the Crystal Mine to produce 6G, then use the Reaction to produce the 1 extra gold?
No. Barley Farm is bowed by that point.

16:36:32 -0800 Subj: Re: [L5R-CCG] Kuro's Fire\CoW Clarification
Kuro's Fire counts up the total (not base, since it doesn't specify base) strength of all the ranged attacks you've produced so far, including modifications to their strengths.
Whoops. Another entry for the Archive, then.
So if I accept a duel, I can't play Accept With Honor, and a Shosuro Tech, and then use Kakita Masazumi's action? I thought the rule was you can only use each printed reaction once, but could use as many reactions as you had available.
Not what I meant to say. Based on the context of the original question, I thought the assertion was that a single card could make multiple Reactions to a trigger. Which, of course, it cannot. My apologies.
Rules for 30 November 2003
This is like having a note inside a box, and the note reads "Do not open this box.". By the time you read the note it's too late.
I need a "No anologies" sign over my computer. In a rules situation, they tend to cause more confusion than clarity.
By the time I start resolving the card effects, I've already targetted as per normal rules.
Unless the card specifies otherwise. That's the first rule of L5R.
Something that may help: Limited duels. When do they target, and how does the effect from the duel compare to the effect from Ambush, timing-wise and such. They seem very similar.
There's a declaration segment in an attack that has no parallel in a duel.
RoB: Bloodspeaker Sanctum & CoR
Can you bow Bloodspeaker's Sanctum to allow one of your non-shugenja personalities to cast a kiho as if they were a shugenja, if you're playing off of City of Remembrance?
Yes, because it's the more recent effect.

DE Ambush explicitly states that Honor is lost AFTER the battle, at which time it seems way too late to pick a new target...
Once a Personality has been targeted by Ambush, Ambush *will* cause an honor loss. That's all that matters (Diamond rules, pg. 88).
so does the Seppuku happen when the target is chosen? And if so (I just read the relevant text in the DE rulebook, p.88; it does mention "getting targeted by an action"), why would one get to choose another target?
I was following precedent for the current ruling for the Underhand of the Emperor vs. Ambush (which may not have been a good idea).
