A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
wedge
If you wedge a personality with Yu, can you use kisada's shrine to stop their destruction at the end of the combat?
No (FAQ, http://l5r.com/ccg/faq.html#s4).
Reaction questions
My opponent bows for the Imperial Favor. I react with Shinjo Haruko's ability. My opponent bows a Scorpion Distractor & Angai to cancel Haruko's ability. Can I use a 2nd Shinjo Haruko and still cancel the lobbying attempt?
Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 72).
I play a Sneak Attack at the beginning of battle. My opponent plays a Fall on Your Knees. Can I play another Sneak Attack in my hand?
Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 72).
I attack with Shinjo Reizo & Moto Latomu each at different provinces. I use the NPotM to switch their locations & use Latomu's Ranged 2 Attack on the opponent's Doji Nagori. My opponent plays Fall on Your Knees. Can I still react again with Latomu's ability b/c it is not once per turn?
Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 72).
My friend says that you can only react once to a particular trigger with the same reaction. Is this correct?
Almost; you only get one *printed* Reaction (Diamond rules, pg. 75; see also canceling on pg. 72).
Tachiyama
Does Mirumoto Tachiyama's bonus apply if he is attacking and there are no defenders?
No (card text, Diamond glossary, pg. 102).
Does Mirumoto Tachiyama's bonus apply if he is defending and there is no attacking personality at his province?
No (card text, Diamond glossary, pg. 102).
There are four people playing a multiplayer game, Players A-D. Players A&B are playing against Players C&D. On player C's turn players C&D attack player A, player A defends with a Mirumoto Tachiyama against personalities from both players C&D. Does Tachiyama get i) a bonus equal to half of player C's hand or ii) a bonus equal to half of player C's + player D's hand?
The former (card text, Diamond glossary, pg. 102).
personality vs unit
If I use [To Do What We Must] to destroy a unit led by a shugenja, can my opponent bow his shiba danjuro to redirect the action to him?
Yes.
In general, can cards that redirect or cancel actions targetting personalities be used to cancel or redirect actions targetting units?
Yes, because units always contain a Personality (Diamond glossary, pg. 105).
Kaukatsu & Diplomatic Apprentice
If you have Bayushi Kaukatsu in play with 3 Diplomatic Apprentices attached and play a Kolat Assassin (which causes you to lose 4 honor when played), can you have Diplomatic Apprentice and the 3 DA all react to the honor loss & cause you and your opponent to lose 16 honor?
No (Diamond rules, pg. 75).
Rules : Aramasu's ashes and seppuku
If a personality causes an honor loss because of Aramasu's Ashes played on him, can the personality commit seppuku ?
Yes (Diamond rules, pg. 88).
Rules : Akodo Rokuro and Unrequited Love
If I play Unrequited Love on a personality, can my opponent choose the option "Bow to gain 1 honor", and then use Rokuro's reaction to prevent the personality from bowing, thus cancelling Unrequited love?
Cancel? No. "Cancel" has a very specific meaning (Diamond rules, pg. 72).
Inazuma Blade question
Can a non-shugenja attach Inazuma Blade?
Only if he or she can attach spells.
Rules for 28 November 2003
How do effects of the card happen before targeting?
Correction to my earlier statement; Ambush produces some effects before it targets *a Personality*.
You normally don't start to resolve the effects of the card until after you target, so by the time Ambush tells me to do effects before I target, I've already targetted.
Key word there: "normally." Card text overrides general rulings. Which Ambush does in this case.
Rules for 29 November 2003, Part 2
So what does the sentence "This counts as a lobbying attempt" that is on Eloquence refer to?
Reactions and effects that look for lobbying.
Endless battle
What if I'm in a battle, and I have Yoritomo Komori and my opponent has Togashi Jusai. He takes an action to add fire tokens to his personality and I then take the action to remove one of the tokens. This could go on forever- how would this be resolved?
By reading Yoritomo Komori (Experienced): "May not target tokens created during this battle."
Yajinden questions
Can you redirect the chi loss from temples of the snake with Yajinden?
Probably not. Temples of the Snake is a Maho card, but Yajinden redirects Maho effects, and there's no rule that says trait effects gain keywords from its card (Diamond rules, pgs. 63-64).
If play playing with madness on one of my personalities, and attach and use force of [Will] with it. force of will will gaing the maho trait. Supose that I have a 7 chi personality in play, and I cast my now maho force of will on it, swapping his chi (7) for his presonal honor (0). If I'm reading the rules right, this constitutes a chi loss due to a maho effect, since I'm setting the chi to a lower value, and could thus be redirected via yajinden to an oponent's personality right?
Yes (card text).
Reign of Blood questions
When Tsuruchi Technique is increasing the ranged attack value of one of your cards, does it count as a ranged attack action targetting one of your cards, for the purposes of Acolyte of Air?
No, but the original Ranged Attack would be a perfectly valid trigger.
I control Yajinden, the Pit of Blood, and Sacrificial Altar. My opponent controls a random bloodspeaker. I bow Yajinden to take control of said random bloodspeaker, and immediately sacrifice them to the Sacrificial Altar. I react and place the random bloodspeaker under the Pit of Blood. Yajinden unbows. After Yajinden is unbowed, I try to use the Pit of Blood to bring the random bloodspeaker back into play. Who controls the bloodspeaker?
The original controller (Diamond rules, pg. 70).
