Rules for 12 October 2003

Zen Faulkes, sent 12 October 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Sorrow's Path question

Player A attacks one of Player B's provinces, which has Sorrow's Path attached. Player B plays Encircled Terrain. Assuming that Player A has multiple units in her attacking army and that the Encircled Terrain resolves, which of the two effects resolves first? Why?

Encircled Terrain, because that happens at the end of the Action Segment, while Sorrow's Path happens in the Resolution Segment.

The problem is, and it's not the first time that happens, the original question *specifically* asked "in diamond" as demonstrated below.

For Diamond Edition questions, it can be useful to give the answer for what it is now, because the ruling won't change in many cases. In that case, I listed *two* different reasons Fall on Your Knees couldn't be played in response to an Overconfidence on Wedge. I reckoned it was easy for someone to read the spoiler to see if those reasons still applied to the Diamond Edition cards.

changes to the archive

The last part under Ranged Attacks is about multiple RA's from 1 action. How does that ruling relate to multiple duels from 1) Come One at a Time and 2) Heroic Sacrifice.

You have to look for whether the card key for an action or a duel. Something that negated a duel would affect just one; cancelling an action would affect both (though if it was played for the second duel, it wouldn't undo the results of the first).

The archive part comes into play if this changes the "Ranged Attack" ruling into a more general Cancel/Negate ruling, i.e. cancelling actions that create mutiple effects, regardless of whether the effects are RA's or not.

Strictly speaking, I could remove that ruling completely, since it says that in the rulebook (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 45). In fact, I think I will.

And while I understand the reasoning behind not updating the archives for Diamond Edition since it has not been officially released, it has made life *very* difficult for those of us running Cubic Zirconium tournaments that there is not a collection of all of the "post-Diamond" rulings for us to use when running these events.

There are searchable archives of rulings at Deathseeker.com and:

Considering that it's been no secret that the Archives won't have Diamond Edition rulings until the set releases (maybe later, like early November), I would have thought anyone gung ho enough to run tournaments using spoilers and proxies could have easily compiled a list of relevant rulings from Jeff.
