Rules for August 13th, 2003

Vaughn Derderian, sent 13 August 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hey folks.

Can you switch Thuk-Kigi out with a bowed unit?

No. You cannot target your bowed personalities with your actions, and Thuk-Kigi has no specific rules text that would grant an exception to that rule.

So I'm trying to wrap my head around exactly what happens if Soshi Tabito Storm Heart's a non-Shadowlands, dishonored Personality with 1 printed Personal Honor or more. The part that is getting me is the order of effects/reactions to the end of the duel. Now, as I understand it, the active player can choose the order of simultaneous effects. So, is the following a legal progression from Tabito's Storm Heart...

1. Assume dishonored opponent realizes futility, and doesn't have any tricks. Duel moves to resolution. I am assuming that Tabito winning, and his opponant losing are simultaneous.

Yes.

2. Active player, since win/loss simultaneous, applies effects of winning first. He is dishonored (since Storm Heart doesn't say *after* the duel, assume this happens immediately)

Apply effects of the duel in the order that they are printed on the card. First, you destroy the loser. *Then* you Dishonor the winner if the loser wasn't Shadowlands.

I may have sent this before and it was answered, but my computer was acting strange the night I sent it. Can you use Clarity of Purpose (WoC Spell) outside of battle? I.E. have a shugenja target the current battle if I have units in it?

Sure. You have Presence...Relevance...everything looks good.

OK, one more WoC question...

Treachery:

Political Limited: Bow your Stronghold to target two Personalities controlled by the same player. Until the end of the game, these Personalities may not assign to the same Province unless it is not possible to assign them to different Provinces.

What, exactly, makes it "impossible" to assign them to different Provinces? OK, the player only having one, for sure; but what else?

A card effect, like Tidal Land Bridge (with only one other Province)?

Yes.

A "will only assign alone" clause (Obsidian and Jade) on another Personality?

Technically, yes...but wouldn't a clause like this make it impossible for them to assign together anyways?

As an example, if the Defender has three Provinces left, one with a loaded Tidal Land Bridge, and the Attacker sends Yakamo Oni to attack one of the others, can he then assign the Treacheried Hida Bob and Hida Tom to the same remaining Province? And is the answer any different if Hida Bob and Hida Tom are actually Shinjo Bob and Shinjo Tom, with Cavalry (so the Oni "got there" first)?

Ah, I see. Sure, a Yakamo Oni would prevent normal assignment, and allow you an "out" to Treachery. The answer is no different when the two personalities are Cavalry. Assignment is pretty flexible. It can be simultaneous when you want it to be, and sequential when you want it to be.

What if the attacker has had 3 Treacheries played on him: Hida Bob and Hida Tom, then Hida Bob and Hida John, then Hida Tom and Hida John. The defender has only two Provinces left. Can all three Hidas be assigned?

What, I gotta do logic problems in addition to answering rules questions? Yuck.

Okay, the way I see it, as long as one of the three goes to the second Province, the other two can go to the first one. If Hida Bob is at Province 1, Hida Tom is at Province 2, and Hida John is currently unassigned, it has become impossible for John to assign without breaking a Treachery...so he can go to either one.

No Mercy will eliminate Ruined Fortress and Sepulchre of Bone players from the game. The loss from No Mercy is completely seperate from the rule about losing the game at -20 honor.

... wow...

Does this means that both strongholds lose between -14 and -19 or that they lose if they are below-19 when no mercy is resolved ? Maybe it's not the rule about losing at -19, but their strongholds say clearly, they do not lose the game if they are below -19 it should protect them below -19 but not between -14 to -19...

No. As long as you are below -14, you lose. It doesn't matter if you are at -15, or -2999, you're still below -14.

Say I am playing a phoenix deck, and have a Shiba Takeshi in play, together with 2 Glick, whom have been Oath'ed to join the phoenix. Next I cast inspiration on the 2 Glick, and then kill one of them. Does this mean that Shiba Takeshi will get a billion Force and Chi?

<snip>

On: Glick

Should you manage to get one (or more) Shiba Takeshi's in play, plus two Glick's, plus two Inspiration's, I'd suggest declaring a finite number of times that you choose to resolve the "infinite" combo. Perform the loop that many times, and then move on with the game.

I remember that Jeff rulled this to be impossible, basicaly because Glick returns into play already bowed, ie does not bow to return into play, nor returns into play and bows...

I can't find that ruling anywhere. *However*, it's probably correct. Cards are neither bowed nor unbowed in the discard pile, they're just dead. So, Jeff's right, I'm wrong. Glick brings himself back into play bowed, just like a Holding enters play from your provinces bowed. It never enters play straightened and then bows, it just comes into play bowed.

There goes my Infinite Combo Award. :(

On: Glick

2. If I use the force bonus from Razor's Edge Dojo on an army including Kaiu Hisayuki, soul of Silence, does he just increase the force bonus on himself or does the stronghold now give everyone +2 force?

Just himself.

A stronghold is not a card, so Silence does not increase the boost...

Good catch.

Shosuro Higatsuku with Monkey Magistrates attached. If he forces another personality to challenge him, do the MM give him the +2chi bonus?

No. Higatsuku is not being targeted by another player's action. He's being challenged by another player's Personality, but it's still *your* action.

Higatsuku wielding Dotanuki forces a challenge. Can I play Shosuro Tech 1st, and then gain the +2 chi from the Dotanuki?

Well, you can't play Shosuro Technique on Higatsuku, because he's bowed from his action. But assuming you could (like, if you were using a different set of rules...), it would work. Shosuro Technique's trigger happens before you become an opposing personality in a duel.

I´m playing Kyuden Doji and I issue a challenge to one of my opponents personalities using geisha assasing.

Both me an my opponent wish to play a reaction,

I want to replace my personality with a personality with toshimoko no shyrio, my opponent wish to bow his private dojo to increase one of his persoanlities chi by his fear.

Who plays the reaction first?

In this specific case, Kyuden Doji beats out Private Dojo, but that's because the two reactions have different triggers. Kyuden Doji is played *when* your Personality enters a duel, and Private Dojo is played *after* your Personality enters a duel.

In the case of a different Reaction, though, like, say...Bayushi Kwanchai (which has the same timing trigger as Kyuden Doji), the person to the left of the active player would get to take the first Reaction. So, Kwanchai would be able to jump in before you could shoot Toshimoko no Shiryo into the duel.

1. When using the kiho does it remove all of those traits on the traget personality or just the ones I choose?

"remove the Cavalry, Naval, Yu, Double Chi, and Tactician traits from one card." The card says it removes all of them. You cannot select some to remain.

Is this removal permanent?

No. Effects on a card are always until the end of the turn unless another duration is specified.

Kyuden Tonbo:

When I discard a card to give a force bonus to one of my tactician personalities is this considered an "unplayed card from my hand" because I don't use the text card?

Absolutely.

If a Dark Ring enters play for you after the 'normal" Ring of the same element is in play, do either of them get discarded?

No.

Can I have both the Ring of Water and the Dark Ring of Water in play at the same time, as long as I play the pure Ring of Water first?

Sure.

Using a sufficient number of Political Entanglements, can you turn a bonus into a penalty? Due to cards like Blacksteel Blade and Oni no Megada, it would seem that a stat can be a negative one. Furthermore, Corrupted Jade Sliver would imply that penalties are possible.

Tentatively, yes. I don't see any situations where a negative stat would be a problem, but if any crop up, the ruling will have to be reconsidered.

Can you retrieve any one spell or Kiho that Suru casts with Chuda Retainer?. And with Suru exp?

Yes, but only until the end of the turn. At the end of the turn, Suru's change to the Spell or Kiho will wear off.

If I could get an official answer on this one that would be great or I guess I could settle for one of you rules lawyers. Do you take care of the effect on Bloodied Ground when played and then add the force bonus at the point where the delayed terrain would normally resolve? Or Do you wait and take care of the ability when the delayed terrains are resolved?

Bloodied Ground is no different from all other Delayed Terrains. Its effects will take place after all players in the battle have passed on their chances to take actions, including the "focusing" of cards to add Force.
