post for 19 May 2003
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
I need Ruling for tommorows TOurnament
I agree, but I also disagree, Shiba-san. I believe that Jeff said earlier that the words "negate" and "cancel" are equivalent in meaning on L5R cards.
I find that highly unlikely in light of the fact that I deliberately made them different when I rewrote much of the Gold Edition rulebook. In fact, they're still different in there, on page 45.
Negating one effect stops just that one effect. Everything else still happens.
Canceling an action or event stops the whole thing, even to the point of stopping it from counting as being played or attempted.
Private Dojo Errata Effective June 2nd, 2003
Still, I have to ask - why June 2nd?
We normally try to have errata go into effect on the first of every month. However, the 1st is a Sunday, with some Kotei scheduled for the Saturday before. We don't want anyone to have to change their decks in the (unlikely) event that a tournament gets delayed a day.
Checking on a few cards
Hmm, I feel rusty with the rules, so I'll have to ask...
* Show of Good Faith: this card says you cannot MOVE tokens/cards to/from the stolen Personality, but it doesn't say anything about ATTACHING. I saw people using it to attach an Ikiryo to a stolen high-Chi personality (with Soshi Eiji in waiting, of course). Legal, right?
Right.
* Akodo Rokuro: the opponent plays a Stand Against the Waves, Rokuro can only save one Personality from bowing, right? Also, against a Block Supply Lines or Tsudao's Favor, he can use his ability, right? But then, it only keeps the Personality unbowed - the rest of the unit is bowed, right?
Right, right, right.
Show of Good Kiseru
Just have a question about Kiseru.
Say I take over an unbowed personality with Show of Good Faith, attach Kiseru, then bow for favour. When the personality returns to its original owner at the end of my turn will it unbow during my opponents turn if I do not discard a card to Kiseru? I ask as it states 'does not straighten unless you discard a card from your hand' and I am the owner of the Kiseru.
The controller of a Personality controls all cards in the unit. [GE p. 25] That Kiseru is now your opponent's. She is the one who needs to discard cards to straighten the Personality.
Questions?
If someone uses a Geisha Assasin on one of my personalitys and then uses the Kyuden doji ability does the personality who jumps in get to focus?
Yes.
Do i get to focus multiple times?
Your focusing works normally: do it as many opportunities as you can until someone strikes.
Private Dojo Errata Effective June 2nd, 2003
I'm not disagreeing with the errata and actually I find it makes Private Dojo a much more reasonable card but still viable, but if design is going to start errata'ing cards, why not errata other abusively "costed" cards like Morning Glory Castle, Importune Kami, and Noh Theater Troupe? Or Kyuden Doji, since Kyuden Doji is also an abusive dueling strategy?
Private Dojo has been out a long time. None of the other cards you mention have.
Cards do not receive errata because they change the tournament scene. (If they did, Refugees would have gotten nerfed a long time ago.) Cards receive errata because they change the tournament scene in ways we do not want it to change. It is entirely acceptable for Kyuden Doji to have a strong pro-dueling effect because Crane is supposed to be good at dueling. Shadowlands is not. Yet, Private Dojo makes it the absolute best, or so close as makes no difference. We do not want this to be the case.
Despite Martin's assertions, it is not an issue of templating. Although making Private Dojo function more similarly to other 2-for-2 Holdings is an obvious and tested way to reduce the card's power, it is not overly strong because it is different. It is overly strong because the effect is too great for the cost. It would be just as strong if there were no other 2-for-2 Holdings in the environment at all.
Question about the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng (Exp.)
I have a question about this item : when it is destroy, does the shadowland personnalities only loose the +1/+1 of the mask or does they loose the +1/+1 and gain -1/-1 (the last sentence of the mask)
They lose the +1/+1 and acquire a separate -1/-1.
rules questions
How does interact the blade of slaughter with Ide Tang reaction?
Relevant texts:
Blade: Dishonor this Personality after playing Blade of Slaughter. The next time this Personality becomes honorable, the Blade permanently gains +2F/+2C, and this Personality may not become dishonored while this Blade remains attached. Force +0
Ide tang: Political Reaction: Bow Tang before one of your Personalities is dishonored to negate the dishonoring.
The Personality will not be dishonored from attaching the Blade, but he now must become dishonored by some separate source and then restored before the Blade's bonuses happen.
Hida Kosho Question
If I have someone at the battle, does Hida Kosho have to be at the battle to use his ability?
From the FAQ at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/faq.html :
] Q: Can Hida Kosho challenge an attacking Personality when Kosho ] is in my home? He doesn't say "opposing". ] ] A: You're right, he doesn't say "opposing", and because of ] that, he can challenge an attacker in the current battle from ] your home or from a different battle, and if Kosho is in the ] current battle, he can challenge an attacker in a different ] one.
Winds of Change question
Is Winds of Change going to be an oversized set like Soul of the Empire and Time of the Void, seeing as how it's an "end of arc" set?
It will be normal-sized. This should tell you something about the story.
rules questions
This brings up a question I have, though. A combo I saw with this: Iuchi Yue (elemental wind open: move one item from one of your unbowed personalities to another once per turn.), Blade of Slaughter, and two of Ikoma Goro. Play the Blade of Slaughter on one Goro, dishonoring him. Bow and dishonor the other Goro to re-honor the first one, and the blade gets its bonus. Next turn, straighten the second one, then have Yue move the sword to him. He's dishonored at the moment, so the other Goro may bow and dishonor to restore him to honorable status. The thing I'm not sure works here is: would the sword gain the bonus multiple times? I think it would, but I'm not sure. By the wording on the card it might be the case that the Blade can only gain the bonus once per dishonored person it's attached to, or it might be once each time it is attached to a dishonored person, even if it was attached to this person before. Or, it might be that it is only the first time it happens while the sword is attached to someone, in which case my combo would be fruitless and I can ditch it for better cards.
The Blade gains a permanent +2/+2 the very first time the Personality it's on changes from dishonored to honorable following the attachment of the Blade. It is possible for the Blade to gain multiple +2/+2 bonuses if it is moved from Personality to Personality. The "this Personality may not be dishonored" effect ends each time the Blade leaves a Personality, though. [card text]
Shadowlands Garrisons
The fortification Garrison allows a player to take actions as if he had presence at a battle at that province.
I am playing Shadowlands Horde. My opponent attacks a province with Garrison attached.
Is the presence that Garrison creates a Shadowlands presence? Can it be affected by cards that target the Shadowlands trait, or that target actions played by a Shadowlands personality?
No, no, no.
question
Can Light of the KamiĆs fear effect be used in conjunction with Private Dojo?
No. It must use a Fear-producing action on the Personality card.
Rules Questions
Just checking up on a couple things.
1. Defensive Naval Invasion prevents Sneak Attack, Correct?
Correct. It also prevents playing a Terrain via a Scout.
2. Barricades do not prevent an offensive naval invasion, Correct?
Incorrect. They do prevent the Attacker from taking the first normal action. They do not prevent the battle from being declared Naval, and they do not prevent the other effects of a naval invasion.
3. Can you arrows from the woods your arrows from the woods? I'm just wondering, because the reaction on the card reacts to 'one of your units makes a ranged attack'. Arrows from the woods isn't a ranged attack coming from one of your units, Correct?
You cannot react to one with another. The Reactions on Arrows From the Woods and Tsuruchi Technique may only be used on ranged attacks coming from units you control in your army. [card text]
