A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
shosuro Techinique
When I use shosuro Thecninique to raise my force equal to a opposing personality, if this personality lives the battle (dead or go home) I lose the force that I previously raised?
No. The bonus lasts for the rest of the turn.
Another Shos Tech question
I'm sure I know the answer to this but I live in hope...
Can I use Shos Tech in reaction to a Test of Might to raise his Force?
No. "Sometimes a duel compares a stat other than Chi. During such a duel, focusing -- and bonuses that add "as Focus cards" -- add to the stat compared in the duel. Effects that make no mention of adding as Focus cards always raise or lower Chi." [GE p. 62]
2 Questons; Ashura and Overhelmed
I use Overwhelmed on my Ashura and the Opposing player has 2 personalities in the battle. Which happens first? My Opponent sends home 2 of his units or does the Ashura blow up one his personalities with his trait which forces my opposing player to detroy his other personalty because of Overwhelmed?
The Ashura's trait destroys one of his Personalities before the effects of Overwhelmed apply.
The Kakita Guy who Cancels a Political Action taken by a non Couriter personality. Can that guy Cancel Political actions taken by none personalities such as Scorpion Distractor, Draw them Out, discard of Imperail favor, or any other political action card?
No. Only those taken by non-Courtier Personalities.
Judgement Plus Kakita Chiyeko
Kakita Chiyeko says Reaction: Straighten Chiyeko before she issues or recieves a challange. Bow Chiyeko after the duel ends. Let us say I loaded up Kakita Chiyeko with Judgement, an Inkyo, and Atarsi's Armor. I decided to double chi her. Theoretically, if my opponent is completly dishonored..say from imperial funeral. Could, I in theory challange each of my opponents personalities, during that turn, assuming I won each of those duels, and kill off my opponents entire personality base?
Yes.
Also similar question with Chiyeko with the Mask of the Maw and a clan sword attached and the first oni in play. Could she in theory copy the First oni and continue to challenge samurai personalities all day?
First Oni reads. The First Oni bows to challenge a Samurai. Discard your Fate deck's top card. If the Samurai's Personal Honor exceeds the card's Focus value, the Samurai must accept the challenge. If The First Oni loses the duel, destroy both personalities.
Yes.
Rules Question - Items
I am pretty sure the answer but this came up in a game. Mantis player with a personality with a Fox Nagimki and a follower. The unit gets hit with a fear effect and a Face of Fear bowing the follower and the personality. The Mantis player said he could still use the Fox Nagimaki. I said he could not because the personality using the item was bowed. Am I correct?
The Fox Nagamaki only requires bowing the Nagamaki and does not target its Personality. It can be used while the Personality is bowed. [GE p. 24]
Wacky ruling
Can someone explain to me the following ruling on Heart of the Inferno?
"'Fiery' counts as 'fire' (for, e.g., The Way of Water). [RD, email, 6/11/97]"
Sure. This is an old ruling from long before the Keyword Rule was written as formally as it is today. If reprinted today, this would be a standard Fire action.
Munemori vs Hanabi
Are spells performed by the shugenja they are attached to and can Kakita Munemori cancel Hanabi?
Yes [H&E rulesheet], and yes (unless the caster is both Shugenja and Courtier).
I need Ruling for tommorows TOurnament
Does Kakita Munemori cancel any politacal action, or just personalities taking political actions who are not Courtier?
"Bow Munemori to cancel a Political action performed by a non-Courtier Personality." [card text] That only cancels actions performed by Personalities who lack the Courtier trait.
Can he Cancel Accpet with Honor? Discarding the Imperail Favor? Scorpion Distractor?
No, no, and yes (it is performed by the bowing Personality).
IF a player is at 37 honor and Boastful Proclamamtion resolved on his last turn does the player get the 3honor for the event before the start of his turn thus giving him honor Victory?
It is up to the active player, since both the 3 point gain and the check for exceeding 39 are done at the start of the turn and cannot both cleanly happen at the same time.
Can this event get by the 5 honor cap from In TIme of War?
Again, it is up to the active player which comes first, gaining the 3 or checking the value to which you add 5 to determine the cap for the turn.
In time of War has been in play for three turns. a player gains 8 honor on those 3 turn capped at 5 honor a turn equaling 15. He has Shirne of Sun and uses it on the 4th turn. Does he gain back the honor from earlier turns, or does the cap come off just from the turn Shrine of Sun was used and untill In the Time of War resolves again?
Only the cap for the current turn is removed.
Cheysanthemum Festival resolves and a player uses the Shrine of Sun on it What Happens?
No Provinces are lost, if that's what you mean. Creation/destruction of Provinces, Personalities, etc. are not ongoing effects.
Another Queston Negate
A player gets sent home from battle and uses a reaction that negates the BOwing ex. New Lion Personality or New Gold Holding. Does all other effects that happen after he bows get negated as well?
No. [GE p. 45]
Its very early and i cant think of one card for an example but lets say the card or action reads " Bow a personality and then Send it home" If a reaction negates the Bowing does the rest of the effects resolve?
Yes.
Rules Question
Strange Travellers says "Battle: Bow strange Traveler to target an opposing follower. If possible move the Follower to another legal Personality in its army controlled by the same player, otherwise bow the follower." Now my question is since I can target my opponents bowed cards can I use Strange travelers to move a follower to one of my opponents bowed personalities?
Yes.
a few Q.
I remember I have seen something about this somewhere but I can't find it again so here are the Questions:
1- does using the imperial favor as the cost of an action makes the action political ? (e.g. attaching the Imperial Standard)
Only in the case of cards printed exclusively prior to Gold Edition. [H&E rulesheet] For all cards printed in Gold Edition onward, and all actions in the current rulebook, the ONLY thing that matters is whether the word "Political" appears.
2- Is attaching a card to a personality an action performed by the personality ?
No.
Clan Rivalry Question
The Clan Rivals stuff states that you must put the five cards into your deck. My question: Does your deck have to be legal (i.e. 40/40) before putting those cards in, or will the five cards be placed in after you already have a legal deck (making you use something like 45/40 or some crazy mix).
It must be legal before you put the cards in. It will still be legal after you add the cards even if you exceed the normal per-deck limits.
Question
If a Shugenja has SezaruĆs Mask attached and bows during the Blood Rite Ritual, since he counts as two ShugenjaĆs, would he get two 1F/1C tokens?
I would say yes.
rend the soul rules question
after playing a few games with rend the soul a few questions have came in the games...
Battle: ....If that personality's army wins this battle, this battle is tied instead. Your army cannot destroy provinces this battle.
the only tied battle is the battle where i played rend the soul, once the personality is not in the battle it'sa no longer "that personality's army", but the second phrase says your army cannot destroy provinces this battle, so this must mean that even if my personality moves out provinces will not be destroyed.
Correct.
But could i destroy my opponents army if i win the battle?
Yes. More to the point, ONLY the opponent's army is destroyed if you play Rend the Soul, move that Personality to a different battle before the battle resolves, and have more Force at resolution.
if a play rend the soul then switch personalities or i move the personality playing the rend out and move into ther batle a different one ,can i destroy provinces in this battle?,
No.
after this in a game a played a ope game with the tricky "ninube ogoku", i played rend the soul on ogoku with the hope to make the battle a draw and destroy all of my opponents personalities in the battle, but he managed to move them all out of the battle and i destroyed my own ninube ogoku with goju adorai exp ability, then i had enogh strenght on adorai's army to destroy the province, but my opponent argued the my army could not destroy provinces, i said him i had 2 armys in the battle since there was no reference to atacker or defender, the army rend the soul "targeted" was ninube ogoku's not adorai's, so i would be able to destroy the province. how it works?
"Your army" will be only the army that originally contained the Personality you played Rend the Soul on. If you attack and play it on your defending Ninube Ogoku, your attacking army can still destroy the Province.
