post for 10 March 2003

Jeff Alexander, sent 11 March 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

One more (and hopefully last) question concerning the proper effect of Vengeful Dead that was raised in my playgroup today. According to the Accumulated Rulings, the "for all players" clause only means it resolves regardless of who owns it. Assuming both Player A and Player B have already killed one of the other's Personalities with a Kolat Assassin prior to Vengeful Dead hitting the table for the first time, is the proper interpretation:

A) When it turns up for Player A, he resolves it and gets to kill a Personality. When it turns up for Player B, he also gets to resolve it and gets to kill a Personality.

- or -

B) When it turns up for either Player A or Player B, *both* players get to kill a Personality at the same time.

A).

Asahina Itoeke

The new Crane Shugenja's ability can be used in response to any force bonus unless I'm missing out on something. Could she be used in reaction to attaching weapons such as a Celestial sword? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but I thought I'd double check.

Yes.

Rules Questions

1.)If Isawa Hochiu exp challanges a personality to a duel, and uses his reaction ("Reaction: Hochiu focuses once upon entering a duel. This may be used while he is bowed"), but the reaction is canceled with Keen Eyes, there's some difficulties is the aftermath. First, what happens to the focus, or is it even ever played?

It is not even played.

Second, can he use the reaction again, since by rulebook it counts as not having been used? Third, can he now die as a result of the duel (he has the trait that he can't die unless he uses the reaction)?

Re-read Keen Eye. It does not cancel the Reaction. It negates the Reaction's effects. So Hochiu's Reaction still gets used, but does nothing. He does not get to try activating it a second time, and he can die if he loses the duel.

2.)Does defend your honor target the other player (the one causing the honor loss)?

If you step forward a Samurai to challenge him back, yes.

Heaven & Earth Personalities

I just read the flavor text on Bayushi Eitarou.

Hataki is dead?! NO!!!

Yes.

Hataki appears on Be Prepared to Dig Two Graves, if you'll notice. The one grave is for the person you're going to kill. The other is for you.

Revenge is like that.

Vengeful Dead

One other question -- am I correct in saying that shuffling the event back into your Dynasty deck is optional since the word "may" is used?

You are correct.

Rules Q

A player on the losing side of a battle plays to the last man, they also have several units with YU effects to resolve. Do the Yu effects trigger first? followed by the effects of to the last man?

Destroying cards via the Yu trait is done during battle resolution. [FOU rulesheet] To the Last Man is played after resolution. [card text] Yu will always happen first.

Rules Q: Hida Yagamaki

If Hida Yagamaki is in a battle with another personality who has a follower attached and this other personality dies during an I. Duel, does Yagamaki gain +1/+1 or +2/+2?

+2/+2, unless it's a token Follower. Then it's only +1/+1.

In other words, are cards attached to a personality discarded or destroyed when the personality is destroyed in a duel. Sorry if the answer is apparent in the rules, but i couldn't find it...

GE pp. 60-61, under Destroying and Discarding: "All cards attached to a card that leaves play in any way leave play in the same fashion; remove all tokens on them (including Follower tokens) from the game."

Bonus points to you for trying to find the answer on your own first, by the way. :)

P.S. Strange question, but since Winds are considered cards, need I actually own a physical copy of Daigotsu (pending his imminent release) to use him in tournament play?

Yes.

I ask because IIRC you can use a photo-copy/box cutout, etc. for your stronghold since it is not a card.

I'm not sure why you think that. You need to use a real, non-proxy Stronghold, too.

Solitary Snak Question

So the local Ratling player would like to know whether he can target his own Snak (cannot be challenge or issue challenges) with Solitary Engagement. He argues that since there is a period after the send home portion, both units get sent home and then the rest of the action (the challenge) gets cancelled.

So can Snak Solitary Engage?

Yes. Snak can even play Iaijutsu Challenge. It just won't do anything. Snak does not say that he cannot take actions that involve challenges -- only that he cannot challenge.

Doji Kazo question

Doji Kazo may not attach cards.

If Kazo is given the Shadowlands trait, say, by Omen, may he attach Blackened Claws since it says Personalities who may not attach Items may attach them?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

what are the lion looking like for next expansion

I was just curious what the lion clan was maybe going to be like that for next season?.

Does anybody know where i can look at the cards for the next expansion?

We're previewing 30 selected cards on our own website (http://l5r.alderac.com) at the rate of one per day. Some fan sites are getting their own additional previews to display -- hang around any popular L5R discussion forum and you're sure to see the announcements.

There are no sites that have the entire set available.

Question for Jeff A.

When Moshi Hinome uses her open ability to move aura tokens from one personality to another can she move the aura tokens from a bowed personality? Basic question, does her ability target the peep or the tokens?

She targets both Personalities. She cannot move tokens off or onto one of your own bowed Personalities.

WE WANT A KOLAT STRONGHOLD !!!

I think the subject says all, but is it posible?

No.

Question for Jeff A.

Are Moshi Hitome's aura tokens affected by " In Search of the Future "? As they are not "cards" I would say they are affected and reduced to zero.

You would be correct.

-jeff please make a sarcastic comment when answering this question-

"It's National Rulebook Appreciation Month!"

Drum of Water Question (Jeff)

Quick question regarding drum of water. Is it possible to activate it in the event of a tied battle?

Yes. You don't "win", but you do "destroy the opposing army." (This is in the Archive, under "Resolution Segment".)

Rules Question

Hello I got a question:

Why Ninja Mimic's ability fades if target personality dies?

Because it's in the rules. GE p. 39: "Effects that last until a certain card straightens also end if that card leaves play."

The reason behind the rule is to prevent the ability from becoming permanent with no way for your opponents to make it end.

A few questions for Jeff

On honor losses on personalities considered costs, entering play effects, and/or restrictions?

Unless written or ruled explicitly as a cost (and VERY few cards in L5R's history fall into this category -- at last count, I think it was two cards and one Stronghold), it's an effect.

By the way, a restriction isn't something that happens to you or that you have to do. A restriction is a condition you have to meet.

I ask concerning the use of Turn of Fate and I Give you my name to bring personalities with honor loses into play. (I'm pretty sure its an effect I'm just double checking)

In addition, are the clauses on Oni no Tsuburu and Kyoso no Oni regarding personality/holding destruction costs, effects, and/or restrictions?

It depends how it's written. For a card that says "You must do X to play this card", X is a cost. Tsuburu no Oni falls into this category.

On the other hand, if the card just says, "Do Y," then Y is an entering-play effect. Kyoso no Oni is one of these.
