Jeff Alexander, sent 28 February 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Newbie with a new question..

My question refers to the "Hound of the Lost" , a gold legal follower with the following text:

"Reaction: Bow Hound of the Lost before another card in this army produces Fear targetting exactly one unit. The fear targets and bows a single Follower of your choice in that unit, regardless of Force, instead of producing its normal effect."

Here's the question--

Let's suppose that I have 3 Hound of the Lost attached to a personality along with a single- Fear producing follower. When the Fear producer attempts to create Fear, can I react (one at a time) with all three of these Hounds, each time targetting a different follower in the targetted unit?

The Hound changes the Fear so it produces a new effect "instead of" its standard one. Once it's been changed, the Fear can no longer be changed to a new effect "instead of" the original again.

The opposing Personality must have a higher current Chi and a lower printed Personal Honor than your Personality.

Right... so their printed Personal Honor must be lower than my printed Personal Honor? Or their printed Personal Honor must be lower than my current Personal Honor?

Printed versus printed. (It would be this way if the card only specified "a lower printed Personal Honor than your Personality" and nothing else, right?)

Jeff.... more argument about Sharaku :)

The ruling stands. When a Province is destroyed, in battle or at any other time, you put the unplayed cards that were in it into your discard pile. This is not discarding them "from" the Province.

;;;;;

Jeff,

I have to disagree with this as you have written it as it directly contradicts whats in the rulebook.

What Murai-san was asking for was either a ruling that this is a valid use of the card, OR a change in the wording of the rules to reflect this.

It is not a valid use. The rules need to be changed. Putting cards into the discard pile because a Province is destroyed -- in battle or for any other reason -- is not "discarding from a Province".

More Questions

Can, at a battle, the defender play Defensive Duty at a Province that has a Region that cannot hold Dynasty cards such as Togashiís Shrine?

Yes. The Personality is not put into the Province, but all other effects that can happen still happen.

If and when Defensive Duty is played is Togashiís Shrine discarded? Are cards attached to the Province, such as Fortification, discarded as well?

No and no. Defensive Duty discards all cards "in" the Province. Cards attached TO a Province are not "in" it.

If I use Isawa Taeruko to get a non-Unique Fortificaton may I attach it to a Province that contains a region like Togashiís Shrine?

Yes. Again, cards "attached" to a Provice are not "contained" in the Province.

Tournament Closure

ok i have a question that has been bugging me ever since I won a tournament with this tactic and I feel that it shouldn't have worked but the judge caught it and ruled it in my favor...

in open if you have a south wall of ostan uchi <I believe its the south wall> that says all other fortifications in this province can not be destroyed and a bridged pass that says destroy this fortification to send the attacking party home...

would that imply that u cant destroy the bridged pass...but my opponent and the judge let me keep the bridged pass there after sending the attacking army home...because it cant be destroyed....

my question is "is that right??? or should the bridged pass not have been able to be used in the first place because it states DESTROY this fortification???....

The Bridged Pass cannot be destroyed, which renders its ability unusable because its cost cannot be paid.

With The Imperial Messenger Holding Imperial Retainer Political Reaction: Bow before a player plays a card that will cause the player an Honor loss. The player may discard the card instead of playing it. If it is played, increase the Honor loss by the printed amount.

I agree if he uses Kolat master (action) but can it be used if the opponet play items (Porcelain Mask of Fu-Len) or Personalities (Voitagui) or Holdings (Corrupt gold?) to double the amount?

Yes. It can be used on any card that causes an Honor loss to its player when it is played.

Does Agasha Hamamari cancel reactions played to his player actions (For example, he plays Kolat Master and i play The Time is not Right. Can Hamanari "cancel" mi reaction?

Canceling an action targets the action, but only target's the action's CARD if it's an Action card. Hamanari could cancel your The Time Is Not Right when you play it against his Kolat Master, but not when you play it against his Judgement, for example.

Does Balance in Nothingness cancel A Matter of Pride if he has shadowlands personalities bowed? or Peasant revolt if he has a 3 Force personality bowed?

No and no. Both of these Events have global effects. By the rulebook, they target nothing.

Question on timing or Jeff

Cards Ivolved: Kolat Assassin, Imperial Messenger, Wind's Truth

Let's say I play Kolat Assassin, I wanted to increase the honor loss with my Imperial Messenger, but as my opponent gets the first reaction he steals the honor loss first.

My question: can I still use my reaction, possibly rendering the Wind's Truth unusable?

First, let's make sure your opponent REALLY gets to react first. Gold Edition rulebook, page 48:

] If more than one player wishes to take Reactions at the same ] time, first consider the exact wording of the Reactions. A ] Reaction taken "before" its trigger, for example, is always ] playable before one taken "after" its trigger. If the Reactions ] have the same wording for when they're taken, the chance to ] take the first Reaction goes to the player to the left of the ] one who caused the trigger. For things like the beginning of a ] phase, treat the active player -- the one whose turn it is -- ] as the one who caused the trigger.

The Wind's Truth is cast "when any player gains or loses honor", but Imperial Messenger has to be bowed "before a player plays a card that will cause that player an Honor loss." In this case it's clear: Imperial Messenger is ALWAYS used before The Wind's Truth is. Your opponent cannot steal your loss before you double it.

My friend believes that reactions have to be completely resolved before the next reaction is played.

He's right, mostly. GE rulebook, page 47:

] Each action must completely resolve before any player may play ] another action (other than a Reaction).

On page 48 we go into more detail about that exception:

] a Reaction has a trigger event to which it reacts, and you take ] it upon such an occurrence. You must take a Reaction as soon as ] its trigger occurs.

So even though Reactions CAN interrupt other actions (including other Reactions), they can't do it arbitrarily. They only interrupt if the necessary trigger happens in the middle of the other action. You cannot force one honor-modifying Reaction to go off in the middle of another one.

I don't agree with this, like in the case of both players having take the initiatives. If the first player to play a reaction gets to play and resolve his, then the other player can't play his.

You're simply not correct here, I'm sorry to say. Take the Initiative changes who takes the first turn just before that turn happens. After one is played, however, you are still in the trigger condition for Take the Initiative -- it are still "after players draw starting hands and before the first player's first turn". Another Take can be played.

Also in the rules archive it says " ... If a Reaction creates a situation that only one player can have (e.g., doing something first), the last one played takes precedence".

Multiple Take the Initiatives is a perfect example of this. Starting cut determines that you go first. I react with a Take, so now I'm going first. YOU react with a Take, so now YOU're going first. Since we both can't go first, your Take becomes the only one that matters since it happened last.

Rules Question (JEFF)

I'm trying to determine what Imperial Edicts targets when it cancels actions. My assumptions at the moment are: When cancelling a Kiho or Spell, Imperial Edicts targets the Kiho or Spell but not the caster of the Kiho or Spell. When cancelling an Innate Ability, Imperial Edicts targets the Shugenja who has the ability.

Canceling an action targets the action. It only targets a card if the action is from an Action card.

Matsu Agetoki + White Shore Plain

White Shore Plain:

White Shore Plain Delayed Terrain Battle: Each Tactician who has not used the Tactician trait for this battle gains a Force bonus equal to his or her Chi. 4 Gold

Matsu Agetoki Exp.

Lion Clan Samurai. Experienced. Unique. Cavalry. This unit may not be targeted with Ranged Attacks. While Agetoki is in your army, you may play terrain cards face-down. Any face-down terrain card produces no effects until it is revealed at the end of the battle action phase.

When do you pay for White Shore Plain with Agetoki's Ability?

When you play it.

Proposed List for Diamond (Scorpion)

(Mark Jelfo said on the Crane BBS in reply to some comments there about bombarding Jeff with a suggestion) 5. Jeff is not taking requests. His job

If Jeff wants to he can read the discussion and maybe he might take something away from it. If he doesn't want to he can tell us to give it up or just exercise his delte key - the last option is open to everyone that isn't interested also. :>

Exactly right. Mark's comment was in direct response to a call to petition me with direct email. It doesn't apply to the mailing list. Discuss away!
