Question for Jeff A.

A crane player is facing another crane player. Crane player A has a Doji Reju with a Doji house guard and a Uji no Shiryo attached. Uji no Shiryo battle: If there are one or more units in the opposing player's army, bow Uji to give this personality -1f/-1c and move this unit into the current battle.

Crane player B has a Doji Kurohito

now here is the question. Player A declares an attack and declares no infantry. Player B places his Kurohito in his 2nd province( both players have 4 provinces)

Now player A resolves the battle in province 3 first. Can he bow Uji and move Reju into a province where there is no defending army?

I am pretty sure I know the answer is no, but I just wanted to double check.

At Province 3, there are no units in the opposing player's army. Uji can't be used. [card text]

post for 18 February 2003 follow up

Gold rulebook, page 49:

] The following things are other Limited actions the active player may take: ] ] * Move attached cards between two or more of his or her unbowed ] Personalities, bowing the Personalities. This targets every card ] bowed and moved.

Follow up question. Does this mean all of the cards that are moved are bowed as well? I know the personalities bow, but do the followers, ancestors, items, etc bow as well?

The rules don't say they do. Keep them in their current orientation.

Also if an ancestor is bowed can its action or reaction still be used if it does not require it to be bowed?

Ancestors are cards. Actions on bowed cards and Strongholds cannot be used.

What if it is attached to a bowed personality?

It depends on the action. Spells are the only card type with the universal rule that their actions can't be used independently when their Personality is bowed.

Can anything that says action reaction, limited, open, etc be used over and over again if it does not say bow to use the action whether it is bowed or not and there is no limiting factor words like once per turn or particular phase?

If there's no explicit finite limit, no bowing cost, and the card is not bowed, it can be used an indefinite number of times. (Don't forget you can use each printed Reaction only once per trigger.)

Hmm that's not how it is worded in the GE rulebook by my understanding (and I have a recolection of it being ruled differently in the past also)

Someone ruled that bowing is not a cost of lobbying? That would surprise me. Rulebook wording or not, it is.

rule questions

Here are a couple of rules questions that I'd like a confirmation on. I've been asked on some of them last week-end and wanted to make sure I did not say too many mistakes.

- May I use shrine of stone to straighten a personnality who's being ambushed ?

No. Ambush creates an extra Attack Phase. It can't be two phases at once and Shrine of Stone can only be used in the Action Phase. [card text]

- During a duel, I play shadow's claw, pick my first five cards, put one of them in my hand, and focus with another one. Say I have an other shadow's claw amongst these 5 cards, may I use it again ?

Not if it's in those five. The Shadow's Claw is used before the focus [card text], and instructs you to focus instead with one of the five and THEN to take a second of the five into your hand.

- May I use will of earth with the dark ring of earth ?

Yes.

- Say I have Ijiasu in play with nothing attached. I resolve peasant's revolt, then attack with Shiro Matsu, use some tactician focus, don't rally. Then, may I straighten Ijiasu with Matsu Hyun, or can't I since he has now more than 2 force and is affected by peasant's revolt's ongoing effect ?

He can't straighten while he has more than 2 Force and Peasant Revolt is applying. He has to wait until his Force bonus or the Revolt wears off.

- For the empire bonus goes away with in search, right ?

Absolutely.

- Under solar eclipse, ongoing effects are cancelled, right ?

"Negate any current effects of Spells and innate abilities."

My understanding of the card is that I can still cast kihos under solar eclipse, but not spells. Is this correct ?

Yes.

- About Taeruko and garrison : 1. First, may I use Taeruko's ability to get a fortification which is not in my deck ?

"Bow Taeruko to get a non-Unique Fortification from your Dynasty deck". No.

2. May I use her ability even if my deck is empty ?

Yes.

3. May I retrieve a fortification that I cannot pay ? (I think yes, and then it should be discarded)

Yes, and it would.

4. Say I have no defender, may I use Taeruko's ability (Taeruko being home or in another battle) during a battle to fetch a garrison ?

No. You need public, guaranteed knowledge that your action will satisfy Presence before you do it.

Gunso + Dojo Raiden

If I toss a Gunso on a Mantis personality, and then target it with Dojo Raiden which of the following occurs?

1) Gunso Gives +2F to all followers and all followers will lose -0F if the Gunso dies.

2) Gunso Gives +2F to all followers and all followers will lose -2F if the Gunso dies.

#1. "Numeral" is a rigidly-defined game term in L5R. It includes any leading sign. [GE Glossary, p. 74] When you increase "-1" by 1, you get "0".
