Jeff Alexander, sent 19 February 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Akodo Yobi and Matsu Satomi

Let`s say we are in a battle were I have one Tactician (i.e. Akodo Ijiasu) opposed by a big Scorpion army.

It is my turn and I play a terrain (any)

Can I use Akodo Yobi reaction to draw a card if he is at home?

Yes. Also if he's at a different battle. It counts as a use of Tactician for the battle underway.

And, if my terrain is destroyed, Can I use Matsu Satomi reaction to put that terrain in my hand?

Same answer.

Transferring Items and Followers

I recall that one could transfer items and followers between personalities during the action phase. Is this correct? If so, what are the rules for doing this?

Gold rulebook, page 49:

] The following things are other Limited actions the active player may take: ] ] * Move attached cards between two or more of his or her unbowed ] Personalities, bowing the Personalities. This targets every card ] bowed and moved.

Ray says the ones he's seen on the site are the most recent ones he has.

They may indeed be the most recent ones, but they are not the ones that are due out. I'm not dishing out angst here, but is there any word on when we can expect the new clan letters? Everyone knows that these are the old ones already.

He had Rich re-send them late last week and put them in the pipe to be placed on the website.

Sacrificial Altar - Rules Question

Just a real quick question. Can a bowed personality be destroyed to use the Sacrificial Altar? I say that it can because Sacrificial Altar's gold production is not an "action", and therfore you are not trying to target one of your bowed peeps with an action. Am I correct?

You are correct.

Three Stone River

Three Stone River

Battle Terrain: Lower to 1 the Force of each Personality in this battle with no Followers. Lower the Force of each Personality in this battle with Followers to the Force of his or her hihest-Force Follower.

Is this an Inmediate or Delayed terrain?

All Terrains prior to Gold Edition act as Delayed Terrains unless they specifically say they resolve when played. [GE p. 4]

Official ruling please

I have been asked for an official interpretation on a ruling I made this weekend.

If one player plays Armed and Ready, can the other player play Fall On Your Knees. I said yes, but one player said that it is no longer during battle, so Fall on Your Knees doesn't trigger.

As has been pointed out, Fall On Your Knees is playable in the Battle Action Segment only [card text]. Since Armed and Ready is played in the Resolution Segment [card text], Fall On Your Knees cannot cancel it.

Another ruling from this weekend

I am pretty sure I have seen this ruling already but I can't find it in the Accumulated Rulings.

Can you use Test of Courage to stop a Flattery? If I recall correctly, you can play it, but the battle still ends so there is really no effect.

You cannot play Reactions to units leaving a battle if the battle has already ended.

Plans Within Plans

2 questions about that card :

- Is it legal to play The Time is Now + Plans Within Plans ? PwP says : " Play during an opponent's limited action phase" , that's why i'm not sure.

I'd say it's pretty clear. The combo isn't legal since it isn't an opponent's Action Phase.

- If i play it during my opponent's limited action phase and he then plays "The Jaws of Defeat" and proceeds to the attack phase, am i allowed to take a limited action as my first battle action ?

Yes.

Diplomatic Apprentice

Can you bow diplomatic apprentice instead of the personality to gain control of the imperial favor?

Absolutely! Lobbying is a Political action that requires bowing the Personality as a cost -- and that's exactly the sort of thing the Apprentice was made to work with.

Jeff question

Will Balance in Nothingness cancel Imperial Census, Peasant revolt or Stand against the Waves?

Balance in nothingness reads...

Reaction: Cancel an action or Event targeting one or more of your bowed Personalities.

No, no, and no. Imperial Census and Peasant Revolt are entirely untargeted, and Stand Against the Waves does not target bowed Personalities.

I was at first thinking, no due to the targeting errata online... specifically this...

That's not errata. That's a ruling. There's a difference.

For determining whether an effect has a global target (i.e., is untargeted), "all of a particular group" cannot be a single card (e.g., only one Personality can enter a duel at a time, but an effect responding to "a Personality entering a duel" is not a global effect for "all Personalities entering a duel"). I.e., a global effect must use a word such as "all," "each," or "every." [VRD, 20 July 2001]

Then I realized BiN uses the phrase "one or more", implying to me that it can cancel a global effect targeting your bowed peeps.

You are confused here. The only way a global effect can target is if it also falls under Rule #1 (it says it targets, so it targets), which trumps Rule #2 (it's a global effect, so it doesn't target). Example: Heart of the Inferno. Balance in Nothingness says "one or more" because effects can target more than one card without being global. Look at Overwhelmed as a prime example.

It's an issue of completeness. If Balance in Nothingness just said, "targeting one of your bowed Personalities", there would be questions whether it could cancel an Overwhelmed sending two of your bowed units home.

If this is so, how about if it would only effect some of them? ie, half of your peeps would be hit by census and the other half would not be, if any of those peeps that would be effected were bowed, could I play BiN? Would it cancel the entire effect of census or just on the personalities that were bowed?

Canceled means canceled. It doesn't happen part-way. Nothing more happens except what's happened already.
