Discussion and Question about Jeff's Ruling on 23rd
Higatsuku has bowed to play his duel, can his own player play Shosuro Tech. to copy the other person's chi, then strike and poisoned weapon, or whatever?
His controller cannot play Shosuro Technique.

1)Are cards not released in English (ie Rumors at Court) legal in tournaments in the United States?
No. Legality dates are based on the English release.
2) If so, when does Rumors at Court become legal?
30 days after the first set to come out following the English version release.
So, is the card legal to use in Europe?
Only if announced by the Tournament Organizer at least 30 days in advance.
post for 5 February 2003 / Rules Question (JEFF)
Question for you on The Shadow's Claw. The Shadow's Claw: Reaction: Play before your Personality focuses in a duel. Look at your top five fate cards, Focus with one, take one into your hand, and shuffle the rest into the deck. Can you play a second Shadow's Claw while the first one is resolving?
You can't play a Reaction in the middle of an action unless you're reacting to one of the things that action is doing. You're not in this case.
Surely when the first Shadows Claw instructs you to 'focus with one' of the cards you just drew you have a trigger for a second Shadow's Claw, as it is 'before your personality focuses' again.
Well. In that case, you would:
1. Play Shadow's Claw #1 instead of focusing.
2. Look at your top five cards.
3. Play Shadow's Claw #2 from your hand instead of focusing one of the top five.
4. Look at your top five cards. (No surprises here, they're the same five.)
5. Focus with one.
6. Take one of the remaining four into your hand.
7. Shuffle the other three.
8. Take one of THOSE three into your hand.
9. Reshuffle the other two.
Now, step #8 isn't really possible after #7, but what is possible, and still equivalent, is to take two cards into your hand at step #6 and then shuffle once.
Also If you have two Shadow's Claw in hand can both react to the same opportunity to focus, allowing you to focus two cards?
You can't ever gain focuses by playing Shadow's Claw. Each replaces where your pending focus comes from.

Once the Egg copies a Personality, it's considered a Dynasty card. It goes into the Dynasty discard when it leaves play, and it goes into the Dynasty deck if it's reshuffled.
I think becoming a personality is a permanent effect generated by the limited action on the egg of p'an ku, and the egg is considered both itself and the card copied , and when an ability that names the card it's printed in is copied it is considered to name the copying card, so it would say negate all permanent effects on egg of p'an ku/shadow walker exp 2.
The Egg will still go into the Dynasty deck, since reshuffling it is part of the Shadow-Walker's cost and that has to be paid before its effects happen.
Now that you mention it, the Shadow-Walker's own effect of negating all permanent effects on its own card would cause the Egg to turn back into just the Egg. Congradulations. You now have a pure Action card in your Dynasty deck. Good luck getting it back into play. (Leon, are you paying attention to this?)
Heaven & Earth dates [Jeff, Dave]
Two questions:
1) What is the release date for Heaven & Earth?
Sometime in late April. We don't have an exact date yet.
2) What date will you begin H&E previews on http://l5r.alderac.com?
About 30 days before that.
Question
Deep Earth Sanctum does not allow you to bring your hand size up by the number of rings you have, does it.
No. It only increases your maximum hand size.

That archive entry was written before the Gold Edition rules. It is no longer correct.
Does that mean that Hantei XVI + Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal for exemple makes it almost impossible (very, very hard anyway) for my opponent to perform an honor victory ?
So it would seem.
Thespian Rats
Is Ree still working for AEG? Silly as it might sound, a performance of Ratling Kabuki Theater would weigh heavily in any decision I made about trying to attend a So.Cal GenCon.
Though I wouldn't rule out an appearance by her at a southern California GenCon, Ree has moved on to a position with Avalanche Press.

Moto Chen still has 3 honor while dishonored, so if you have a yu pan (4 honor) and they play company you keep, Chen will enter play dishonored, but You'll still gain 3 honor (his personal honor) from bringing him into play, thus involving him in an honor gain and rehonoring him right?
No, IIRC the rule book says that you gain the printed personal honor from honorable personalities you bring in to play.
No, you don't gain printed. You gain current -- or, in this case, "current" based on just before adjustments that apply once the card enters play. (If you gained printed, it wouldn't matter whether the Personality was dishonored and the question would not be getting asked.)
You do not gain honor from bringing dishonored peeps into play, no matter what their PH is.
The ruling is that "entering play dishonored" still sets your effective Personal Honor to 0 before the gain for paying full price is calculated. That is why Chen works differently.

I have also heard that this card was a special thanks to the French for being so active and supportive to the growing L5R community in Europe. Thusly, the card, as I understand it, will not see an English printing. If this is true, then I have some follow up questions?
It's not true. Questions skipped. :)
Discussion and Question about Jeff's Ruling on 23rd
Higatsuku bows to force the other play to challenge him. You then can NOT target him with Shosuro tech to raise his chi to the opponents level. This has been ruled upon more than once by Jeff.
Well, I'll be damned! After reading his most recent rulings, it is now true that he can't use it.
It's always been true. Shosuro Technique has been considered to target your own Personality since it was made, even before the targeting rules changed. Otherwise the lower gold cost for "targeting a Scorpion Clan or Ninja Personality" would not work correctly.
Oh well. I've been at tournaments with Jeff there, where I did it time and time again.
Did you ask me about it, or did you simply do it while I was watching? All the big tournaments I've been to use Passive Judging, which means judges don't interfere with games unless they're asked or they observe blatant cheating (like pulling cards out of shirtsleeves).
He even ruled that the Asako Towers could cancel the action, which now I it can't anymore, at that tournament. Oh well, it just goes to show you that nothing is ever in concrete.
Unfortunately, that is very much the case. Conventions are noisy, stressful things, no one's memory is perfect, and even rules gurus take some time to acclimate themselves when something changes in a fundamental way.
Shadow's claw targeting
Does shadow's claw target?
Yes: the person playing it.
Can it be played by a bowed chalenger?
Yes. It does not target the Personality.
Encyclopedia
Unlikely. Because L5R has changed publishers several times, and artists' contracts have changed also changed, it would be a nightmare to sort out the publishing rights needed to print the old cards in a book.
This is a very sad thing.. I'd love to just have the Stats and Card text of the older cards..
Then you'll be happy to know that that project is in the works too, and you won't even have to pay money to get it (though you'll have to find pocket-sized paper to print it on).
