Jeff Alexander, sent 10 January 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Vengfull Dead

Is killing a personality when Vengfull Dead resolves a card effect?

Sure. Vengeful Dead is a card.

new to the list

Hi, I have a few quick questions, despite playing for years.

1> I understand most uses of tactician work. We are having a debate on the cards that say they count as a use of tactician. Deijiko exp said it counts as a use of her tac ability, Fujiwara (the Lion ranged attack tac guy) says that it is a use of tact. The question is: does it mean the same?

Yes.

2> Remorseful seppukku. If someone plays remorseful seppuku's my personality, I was told I don't lose his PH, because it is a seppuku effect killing him, the same as per the rulebook. We've always been told for years, however, it causes a loss due to a dishonorable death, same as dying dishonorably in a Iai duel. What gives? Just trying to clarify.

Any form of seppuku death restores the Personality to honor first. [GE p. 61]

Another Question on Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed vs. test of courage

If a player makes a decision to move two units out of a battle instead of destroying a unit when his/her opponent plays Overwhelmed, is "an action" moving the two units, or is the player's decision moving the unit?

Both. Which characteristic matters depends on what the reaction you're trying to use reacts to.

Does inexperienced Kuon get his bonus if Kyofu is in play?

No.

Why not?

Kyofu's title is not "Hida Kuroda".

On: Kyofu

I'm looking at it from this standpoint: it was ruled that Yoritomo Kitao XP discards Yoritomo Aramasu from play because Yoritomo Aramasu has "Bayushi Aramasu" as a trait.

No, that was one line of argument posited by players who favored that ruling. The Rules Team actually decided that Card X should NOT necessarily be considered a copy of Card Y only due to being a different Experience level of Card Y. Kitao was ruled to work that way because there were logical reasons for it to go in either direction, so I settled the matter based on original intent.

The exact original digest with my Kitao/Aramasu ruling can be

Question:face of fear

If a card has fear and the personality has been stopped from going home by a test of courage can the face of fear still be used to the fear ability or does it target the personality producing the fear?

It can be used. It does not target the card producing the Fear.

Rulebook death & destruction effects

Can I ask for a clarfication on why are deaths through Duels considered to be card effects and not rulebook effects?

Because that's almost exclusively the way other rulings have been made over the years.

Is destroying a personality by resolving Vengeful Dead considered to be a card effect?

Sure. Vengeful Dead is a card, and it says, "Kill that guy".

Speaking of Peasant Revolt...

What can stop Peasant Revolt and Imperial Census ? Avoid Fate, Shrine of the Dragon Champion. Am I forgetting anything ?

Changing the composition of your deck to reflect the environment. Refugees tore military decks a new one when it first came out. Look how strong it is now.

Some questions

Three questions. Sorry if they have already been answered before... my friends and I can't seem to agree on the rulings involving them.

1. When Imperial Funeral resolves, do my bowed personalities automatically get dishonored and cause me an honor loss?

No. This is errata, and can be found in the Accumulated Rulings at http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/ .

2. Can my Kohuri cancel an Avoid Fate (or Dharma Technique) that targets my Imperial Gift?

Yes.

3. Vengeful dead: If you choose to discard it after it resolves, your opponent's vengeful dead will not resolve anymore right?

Wrong. Whether you discard or reshuffle it has no effect on the last sentence.

No Personality or Follower that's over 2 Force when it tries to straighten can straighten if Peasant Revolt's full duration has not yet elapsed. It doesn't end until the beginning of the next turn of the player who resolved it. [card text]

That's important: Peasant Revolt's "may not straighten" effect does NOT apply only to the cards it forced to bow when it first went off. It applies to anything that tries to straighten and has too much Force.

Jeff does the card - Balance in Nothingness stop this from happening?

No. Peasant Revolt is completely untargeted by targeting rule #3. Balance in Nothingness cannot react to it.

Would it be correct that if a personality's force were reduced (say by Evil Portents), he would be able to straighten during a Peasant Revolt?

Yes. What's important is his Force at the time he tries to straighten.

We're looking at a way to make this data available to you guys on our website in a convenient sort/filter/print fashion. It will have the most current text, including all rulings and errata. Should be pretty handy when it's up and running.

Will it have all versions of all existing cards? Full text of all versions? Full flavor text of all versions? Include reprints from starters?

No, no, no, and no. It will contain only the ideal wording of the most recent version, incorporating all errata and clarifying rulings.

Keen Eye question

Rules question - here's the situation:

Personality A challenges Personality B. Personality B's controller plays a reaction. They start a Keen Eye war (i.e., Player A uses Keen Eye to negate the reaction, Player B uses Keen Eye to negate Player A's Keen Eye, Player A Uses Keen Eye to negate the Keen Eye that negated a Keen Eye, repeat until both players have played three Keen Eyes.)

The question is, who draws cards, and how many?

Each player draws one card for each Keen Eye not negated.

The answer I came up with is that the player who played the last Keen Eye draws 3 cards, and the other player draws none.

I'd agree with that.

Q: Immediate terrain and force bonuses

Beachhead is an immediate terrain that grants all Naval cards in the battle a 1F bonus. Does destroying the terrain via Superior Tactics, et al get rid of the bonus? The GE rulebook indicates that all effects of immediate terrains disappear (paraphrasing) when they're destroyed. I'm taking this to mean that things like Higher Ground, for example, and that force bonuses are NOT affected.

The term "effects" covers EVERYTHING. That includes Force bonuses. So, no, Beachhead is not a Terrain that takes full effect regardless of whether it's destroyed. (Ask Zen how I feel about Wide Terrain sometime for clues as to why this might be.)

A question about the ring of fire.

Is it possible to play the ring of fire using the Kyoden Doji ability? If an challenge is issued by a low chi personality and then another samurai bows in to take over, is the personality who initiated the challenge considered to have won the challenge for the purposes of playing the ring of fire?

For the Ring of Fire, you take the two Personalities who are in the duel at resolution -- for those are the two who won and lost -- and compare what their Chis were just before the challenge was originally issued. It does not matter whether they were involved in the challenge.
