A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Welcome back! Sorry I'm a little late showing up, but it took about a day for my resubscription to register and I didn't see any questions yesterday. If there was anything pressing I missed, feel free to let me know.
And with that...back to the program!
Likewise with kuroda if an experienced Kuon is in play?
Yes.
Rules questions:
So here are some other ones that have come up recently:
1) My opponent has a personality with 4 followers and the golden obi. If the unit is destroyed in battle, and thus the Obi is activated, how much honor does the opponent get?
You're not starting off the New Year well, Leon. This is an old question and is answered in the Archive, though to your credit it's in a general rulings section and doesn't list the Obi's title any more.
"* During battle resolution, you do not get honor for cards whose destructions are prevented (e.g., Into the Heavens), or for cards that pre-emptively destroy themselves to prevent the destruction of other cards."
2) 2 Ashura die in the resolution phase of a battle. Can they target sequentially thus getting rid of a follower and then the personality that had the follower?
Okay now, that's better! Forwarded to the Rules Team. :)
3) Suppose Ashura is used with TDWWM. What's the timing? In other words, suppose Ashura targets a personality with the Golden Obi. Does the timing work as: a) Cost: Ashura dies b) Trait of Ashura kills someone in opposing army c) Resolve effects of TDWWM targeting personality with Golden Obi d) Golden Obi activated OR a) Cost: Ashura dies b) Resolve TDWWM targeting personality with Golden Obi c) Golden Obi activated d) Activate trait of Ashura, thereby killing the person who had the Golden Obi.
The first one.
4) Does Perfect Attunement *really* only target personalities with equal force or was it mean't to target personalities with equal *or lower* force?
Really. (Hint: look up "attunement".) If it were "equal or lower", it would cost more than 3 Gold.
Peasant Revolt Question
My opponent reveals Peasant Revolt in his turn: Peasant Revolt Each Personality and Follower with over 2 Force bows. No Personality or Follower with over 2 Force can straighten before your next turn
I am playing Utaku palaces: Magistrate Personalities and Magistrate Followers cost 1 less Gold for you. Reaction: Once per turn, after another player declares an attack on you, straighten all cards in one of your Cavalry units. You can do this even if the Utaku Palaces are bowed.
1. Can I unbow a Personality with over 2 force with the reaction?
No. Peasant Revolt prevents straightening for one long, continuous stretch of time, not just during the Straighten Phase.
2. If my personalities are bowed when Peasant Revolt resolves, do I straighten them on my next turn? (My opponent revealed the Peasant on his turn).
No Personality or Follower that's over 2 Force when it tries to straighten can straighten if Peasant Revolt's full duration has not yet elapsed. It doesn't end until the beginning of the next turn of the player who resolved it. [card text]
That's important: Peasant Revolt's "may not straighten" effect does NOT apply only to the cards it forced to bow when it first went off. It applies to anything that tries to straighten and has too much Force.
Another Question on Overwhelmed
Someone told me that you can't play Test of Courage against it if you choose to send to units home. We had a long debate, and I still don't see why you can't play it.
A Test of Courage Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn.
Overwhelmed Battle: Destroy your Personality in this battle with the highest Force. (In the case of a tie, choose one). The opposing player chooses either to destroy one Personality with the highest Force in his or her army or send two units in his or her army home without bowing.
The way I read it is: -Player A plays Overwhelmed -Overwhelmed targets and destroys his personality with the highest force -Player B makes a choice, much like choosing whether to accept or refuse an Iaijitsu challenge. -If Player B chooses to destroy his personality with the highest force, Overwhelmed targets this personality. -If Player B chooses to send 2 units home he is targeting two of his personalities with his opponent's action.
This point is true, but irrelevant. The word "target" on A Test of Courage is supposed to mean that A Test of Courage targets one Personality -- not that it cancels another action that targets a Personality (which, to be fair, was how the old wording worked).
-One of his personalities is being moved out of the battle by an action creating the trigger to A Test of Courage. -Player B plays A Test of Courage, which, because it cancels the action will cancel all remaining effects, leaving Player A's personality dead because you don't undue effects that happened before an action was canceled. A Test of Courage even say "Personalities", indicating that the fact that multiple Personalities going home from one action won't be a problem.
Where do I have that sequence wrong?
You don't. It's exactly right.
Herald Promo
Anyone know how many of the promo we were supposed to receive?
Only two. We had originally planned to give everyone three, but then we had an unpredicted rise in membership that our stock couldn't cover, so we had to reduce the number. Subscribers who got three are lucky.
