Rulings for January 5th

Vaughn Derderian, sent 6 January 2003 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Guess who's back?

I think I remember that a personality with the "will only join X Clan" (1st case) or "will not join Y Clan" (2nd case) can't be targeted by a Kolat Master played by a non X Clan player (1st case) or a Y clan player (2nd Case). I didn't find the ruling in the rules archive, nor under joining and taking control, nor under Kolat Master. Is that correct?

Aye, you remember correctly. Well, almost correctly. You can play the action, and all effects of it will happen *except* for the part where they come over and join you. This applies not only to Kolat Master, but to all change of control effects, unless they specifically say that they will override Clan restrictions (The Dark Sanctuary being the only such card I can think of at this time, but there may be others).

This happened last night. I used Hideyo's Limited action to attach a follower. I then attached My Father's Weapon to Hideyo. Which is it? Does he straighten at the end of the turn because of the weapon or does he not because of his own ability?

He does not straighten. His trait forbids straigtening, and unless you use an effect which will straighten cards that can't normally be straightened, nothing will save him.

Is there a ruling for what happens when you have contradictory actions happening and which one takes precendence?

Sure. First, try and determine if two things are really contradictory. In this case, there's (almost) no contradiction. Effects that forbid something from happening win out against the things that they forbid. I mean, otherwise, what would be the point?

After that, check the wordings of the effects. Some personalities (to continue this specific example) would say that they don't straighten normally during your next straighten phase. In a case like that, My Father's Weapon would work perfectly.

After that, if there are two contradictory effects trying to happen at the same time, the active player usually gets to decide which one takes place first.

Does Ashura's ability trigger during resolution if it is in a losing army?

Yup. Ashura's a bad mothe-(shut your mouth!)

Purity of Spirit is worded, "...the caster need not bow if the opposing personality has the Shadowlands trait..." So, that means you could still bow the caster if you wanted to, right? This is in regards to the new fixed Dragon monk from FOU (Hoshi Chichuih or something? I don't have him in front of me and he's not in Legendary yet...).

This is going on the assumption that I remember a ruling being made on him that you use his bowed chi to calculate effects from Kihos he casts.

So, can he elect to bow when casting Purity of Spirit when targeting an opposing Shadowlands personality so that he can bow a personality w/ <6 chi rather than <4 chi?

Yes, he can elect to do such a thing.

It is not clear in the rules archive about Revering the Past, it says that "If you get an Ancestor, you must attach it if possible." What happens when you can't attach it? Someone in the kotei told me that I have to discard it, but I see no indication of that.

That was a general case ruling made in response to issues raised by this card. It's in the Archive under "Search".

Also if we both grab the same ancestor and it's my revering the past, do I get to attach first?

Absolutely.

Sorry Zen but are you sure this is correct ?

Under Nio Sensei (Rules Archive):

Nio Sensei Gold production is the value printed in the gold coin / grey diamond on a stronghold. [ZF, 5 August 2000] The Shadowlands Horde stronghold has zero gold production. [Stronghold text, ZF]

If the SH stronghold has zero gold produccion, then produces 0 gold (zero is a number, right?)

Correct, and effects which would modify that gold production could be used to increase and decrease it.

This does not change the answer (I think), the Shadowlands player may retain his stronghold unbowed.

Also correct. The only case in which Oni no Ogon will bow a Stronghold is one in which the targeted player must make a payment, and cannot do so using gold holdings in play or card effects. If the Stronghold doesn't produce any gold, it makes no difference towards the payment of Ogon's tax, and won't be bowed by the secondary effect.

I have a question concerning Kyuden Doji. Can you use it's ability to easily play Ring of Fire ?

For exampel, You issue a challenge with a low chi guy, then replace him and win the duel. I couldn't find anything in the archives.

That's 'cuz it's not there yet. ;)

The answer is no. Ring of Fire is playable when one of your personalities wins a duel against a personality who had a higher Chi before the duel. Despite the fact that your representative in the duel has changed, his Chi as measured against the Chi of his opponent probably hasn't.
