Jeff Alexander, sent 13 December 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Gaijutsu no Shiryo

RULING: The phrase "Gaijutsu may have, but not use, Tattoos" covers both activating Tattoo abilities and benefiting from their traits and stats, such as the +1C from Spider Tattoo. He does not gain such bonuses.

There is an "Utaku" family. It and the "Otaku" family are equivalent. I don't know what you mean about the Togashi family being special in the past. rules

Utaku and Otaku are equivalent even in the case of Otaku Kamoko? :)

Yes. Why?

Gifts and Favors Question

I will ask again. << In a message dated 12/9/02 7:54:33 PM Pacific Standard Time, writes:

<< >In a multiplayer game is ongoing effects he creates after he lost still considered ongoing? Were those effects legal if they are done before he is discovered to have lost?

No and no. Moral: if it's that important, find out right away whether the use was legal.

Ok how? Who among the players in a multi player game gets to look under the provinces when a player can not find the gifts and favors in his deck? In this situation there is no neutral party to ask for help?

If absolutely no one else is available, the best choice is that player, since he has the least to gain from knowledge of his own Province contents.

Rules question...

Couple of rules question which has not been answer yet:

From my November 15th post:

1) Lion Clan personality - Ikoma Suma, If Suma join in an attack (army) and successfully kills off the enemy. He went home bowed, can I use Rallying Cry at that time to unbow all units (or they do not get bowed).

Yes.

Can I then use Suma (bow him) to permanently give each personality +1F/+1C ??

Yes.

3) Mantis Clan personality - Moshi Mogai, did every copy of him in play increase hand size by three? which is if three copy of Moshi Mogai is in play then, the hand size is +9 !!!?

Yes and yes. [This ruling derived from GE p. 32]

Sorry to be hitting you so hard on this, but I dread playing against this card in this manner. By ruling in this way, this event will ALWAYS be able to be played. If it pops 1st turn, it STILL will/can resolve later in the game. No other event in gold has such power. Is this the way we want to go with this? An endlessly reshuffling pk event? When I read the card, I see it saying remove one of yor personalities from the game that was killed by an opponents card effect and kill one of his. Then it says "YOU MAY...." reshuffle it. When I first saw the card, I said, cool it recyles as long as you got stuff killed by your opponent. This way of playing it (the errata) completely changes the card and its effect.

It's not errata. It's a clarification. We're not changing how the card works, we're telling you which of two possible readings is the correct one. And we're basing the ruling on something objective, which is currently our first line of recourse.

Song of Corruption Question

A question about this unusual, "traited" event (it has the SL trait)...since it has a lasting game effect, does it, or some tainted portion of it "remain in play" after it resolves? The reason the question arises is because one wonders if something like Iris Festival will destroy its lasting effect.

Iris Festival destroys cards. No card is in play. The Event resolves, starts an ongoing effect, then goes into the discard pile. Its effects can't be destroyed by Iris Festival any more than chi penalty tokens from a Blackened Claws can.

The GE rulebook re event resolution seems to suggest an event is revealed, resolved and then immediately discarded,

"Seems to suggest"? Page 49 states it directly.

This is, as far as I can tell, the only event with a trait like SL.

Yep. Mostly for storyline deck corruption reasons.

Another question/clarification on Beserker rage

If I have Hida Ishi opposed by enough units so he gets his +2/+2 what happens when I target him with Beserker Rage. Does his force go to

a) 6 force( a net gain of 1) the +2 force bonus he gets fizzels away

or

b) 8 force (Double his printed force to 6 and then add the +2/+2 bonus afterwards)

GE rulebook, p. 32: "It is possible to set a card's value directly to a particular number. Do not apply any bonuses or penalties already in effect to this new number -- in essence, they're already part of it. *Do* apply any later changes as you normally would."

Ishi's Force would become 6. That 6 is considered to contain the +2F from Ishi's trait. If the number of units in both armies change enough, he would lose that +2F bonus (and his +2C, which does not matter for this example) and his current Force would then be 4.

Also how would a weapon like tachi (+3/+3) be affected by Beserker rage ?.

If Berserker Rage would increase Ishi's Force from what it currently is, then that makes Berserker Rage's change a bonus [GE p. 31] and Tachi would negate it [card text]. The other effects of Berserker Rage would still happen.

If Ishi's total Force when Berserker Rage is played is 6 or more, Berserker Rage does not grant a bonus and Tachi would not stop Ishi's Force from being set to 6.

Does it`s bonus fade away or would it be applied ontop of the beserker rage bonus.

Neither. His Force would be set to 6. All existing modifiers would still be considered a part of that.

As weapons apply bonuses continiously I would think that they would add their bonus afterwards.

They don't. See the rulebook.

Rule question about Gaijutsu no Shiryo

a few questions about how to use Gaijutsu no Shiryo :

1/ If i attach a tatto that request bowing (Snake tattoo or Moth tattoo for instance) to GnS, do i have to bow him, or the personality he's attached to ?

Him.

2/ If Hogai has Gaijutsu no Shiryo, may i attach more than one tattoo to GnS ?

You may continue to attach Tattoos to Gaijutsu. However, Hogai only gains the benefits of the first one.

3/ may i move GnS with more than one tattoo to Hogai ?

Yes.

4 / if answer to 2/ or 3/ is yes, is Hogai allowed tu use all tattooes provided by SnG ?

The active player must decide which one Hogai gets to have.

Rules questions.

3) Shosuro Aroru, has a trait like this: "A Personality must bow to refuse a challenge from Aroru." Does that mean if Aroru challenges a bowed person, the person cannot refuse? (since he can’t bow again).

Correct. The Aroru is worded so that the bowing is a cost of refusal.

If he does get the bonus, his Chi would just be a "1", and would not add. Only Items add their stats to the Personality regardless of whether there's a "+".

Whoa, hold on there, Jeff! Did I miss a new rule in the Gold Rulebook? It says "typically followers add only to the unit" but it doesn't expressly forbid such a thing. Nor does the section on items say "only items give bonuses to the attached personality."

You're misreading what I said.

Items are the only type of card that adds its stats to its Personality's directly regardless of whether or not its stats have a "+" sign in front of them. (That being said, we've been trying very hard since Gold Edition to insure that all Items have "+" signs on their stats no matter what, so there's consistancy in appearance and this little-known rule doesn't need to be trotted out much.) All other card types require a "+" to add to the Personality's stats -- without a "+", they add to the unit's total instead.

Tamori Tsukiro Q

When he targets the opposing unit with his ranged attack, does he target the personality as well (it looks like yes, card text)?

GE rulebook p. 47: "An effect that targets a unit also targets the Personality leading it, and vice-versa."

BUT.

Tsukiro does not target an opposing unit. He targets one or more cards IN an opposing unit. So this rule does not apply to him.

Does that mean that he will basically destroy any unit led by a personality with 3F or less?

No. In fact, he cannot destroy a unit with Followers with a single action, since his attacks are normal ranged attacks, ranged attacks cannot target a Personality with Followers, and all Tsukiro's targets must be chosen before any of his attacks resolve because they are simultaneous.
