post for 19 November 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Rule question
I think you missed my rule question.
Nope! Answered it in my post for the 15th.
1. Is seppiku a rule book effect?
The basic seppuku available to Samurai is. In all other cases, seppuku is more of a way for a card to die than the destruction effect itself.
2. is death by the card remorseful seppiku considered death by a rule book effect or a card effect?
That's clearly a card effect killing the Personality.
3 stone river
Is the terrain "Three-Stone River" an immediate or delayed terrain?
GE rulebook p. 4:
"All Terrains printed prior to the Gold Edition set are Delayed unless they say they take effect when played, in which case they're Immediate."
Encircled Terrain vs A Test of Courage
I have three units attacking an opposing Province with two defending units. The Defender plays an Encircled Terrain. Both players pass. The Encircled Terrain resolves.
Q1: Could I play A Test of Courage?
A Test of Courage: "Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle."
Encircled Terrain: "Battle: The Attacker and Defender each target one of their own units in this battle. Send all other units in this battle home without bowing."
Yes.
Q2: If the previous answer is YES: How many units remain in the battle if I play ATOC in my first unit?
All of them, since the action is canceled. You can't let some units go home and then play A Test of Courage. The card says it moves everyone home at once, and since that does not create a timing conflict with A Test of Courage, you don't get to break the effect down any further.
From FAQ: A Test of Courage Reads, "A Test of Courage 0G 2FV Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Should read, "...one of your target Personalities out of a battle." [JA, 10 October 2001] Prevents you from targeting the Personality with actions played by any player. [VRD, 23 July 2001]
That is not from the FAQ. It's from the ruling archive. Please don't confuse the two or you will mislead other readers.
test of courage
first off read the book and cards. test of courage targets one person, it can only cancel a send home that targets only one person.
You are not reading the Most Recent Printing of the card. The Gold Edition wording is significantly different and results in the completely opposite answer from the one you gave.
Gold Edition reprints of cards are available at http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/ .
Card effect/rulebook effect
Is a ranged attack that was generated by one of my cards a card effect or a rulebook effect?
That is, if I bow Kyoso no Oni to shoot and kill Kakita Bob, did Kyoso no Oni kill him or did the rulebook kill him?
Kyoso no Oni killed him.
heres one for Jeff...
Kisada's shrine and penalties and bonuses.
If personality A is targeted with a bonus either positive or negative (uncertainty for the negative or any of a dozen force pumpers, how about careful planning) and he then dies, but is brought back with kisada's shrine. Is the bonus still there? Its not the same as a token which would be buried. The rulebook seemed a little fuzzy on this so I'm asking here.
What part of it is fuzzy? I see this on page 39, and it's pretty clear:
] "IF AN EFFECT DOES NOT SAY HOW LONG IT LASTS, IT WEARS OFF WHEN THE ] CURRENT TURN ENDS. Swearing fealty is permanent. Dishonor is ] permanent. Effects from tokens last as long as the tokens last, ] which is normally permanent. Effects that last until a certain card ] straightens also end if that card leaves play. ] ] "Permanent" is just a shorthand way of saying "until the end of the ] game." It does not mean that the change can never be undone. ] ] EFFECTS ON A CARD DO NOT END PREMATURELY IF THE CARD IS DESTROYED, ] DISCARDED, OR EVEN SENT BACK INTO ITS OWNER'S HAND OR DECK. They ] last as long as they would have, had the card remained in play.
In search of the future and ancestral/celestial sword question
Whn you in search in a battle containing a celestial/ancestral sword, it is reduced to +0/+x+1, where x is the number of peeps you dontrol right? the force bunos value is set to 0 (the force bonus is not negated, just turned into a 0 force bonus).
Correct.
So acording the the rulebook, when you set something's value to a set number that includes all previous bonuses. What happens then when one of your clan aligned personalities dies? the bonus is reduced by +1/+1, so no the sword is +0+(-1)/+x+1+(-1), that reusults in -1/+x, where X is the number of peeps you had before your personality died... Am I right? I say so because someone says that no matter what, the bonus stays at +0...
This one is getting forwarded to the Rules Team due to an unforeseen oddity. I'll let you know when we have an answer.
Phoenix Question for Jeff?
If I use Asako Misao (non-exp.) to remove the Shadowlands and/or Blood speaker trait (as in does he remove all or just 1) from Asako Kinuye what does he remove?
A. Only the Shadowlands trait on 1 turn. b. Only the Bloodspeaker trait on 1 turn. C. Both traits at once. D. (This should be Jeff's answer)
He removes only one, chosen by his controller.
Card effect/rulebook effect
0 chi personalities die by rulebook effect. It doesn't matter how they got that way. (It doesn't matter how you wound up losing the duel either, btw. Bend Like a Read didn't kill you, the duel did. ^_^)
But Poisoned Weapon (if it killed you before the end of a duel) would still be a card effect ? Or would it be a rule book effect because it reduced their chi to zero?
Death from 0 Chi is caused by the rulebook.
question about Turn of Fate
not sure if you answered this already but i don't remember reading it. do you gain the honor for the personality you bring into play via Turn of Fate.
Turn of Fate:
Spell Limited: Bow this Shugenja to bring into play a face-up Personality in one of your Provinces with Gold cost less than this Shugenja's, meeting the Honor requirement as usual and waiving all costs. Destroy all cards attached to this Shugenja, then place this Shugenja face up in the Province.
You only gain honor for paying full price for a Personality during your Dynasty Phase. You would not get any for Turn of Fate.
Card effect/rulebook effect
I am a master at that, but it's not the case here. I genuinely did believe that duels would end up being a rulebook effect
This has been put before the Rules Team.
I'm thinking that right now, it's just Losing a Battle Chi Death and Yu.
The seppuku response that Samurai can take to being involved in an honor loss.
The destruction of an Ancestor if its Personality loses the required Faction alignment (though this doesn't cause Personalities to die).
