post for 22 July 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 23 July 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Crane Tattoo

The Rules Team is currently reviewing the critically-reworded Gold edition of Crane Tattoo and deciding how we want to rule on it. I'll let you know when we come up with an answer on exactly how it works now.

Isawa Norikazu

Does Isawa Norikazu have to be in a battle to negate a card targeting one of my cards in the battle? For example, if Shiba Tsukune is targeted by Block Supply Lines and Isawa Norikazu is not in the battle, can I bow Norikazu to stop the BSL? I was under the impression that you could, that the only time Norikazu had to be in the battle was if you wanted to negate cards that affected the battle (e.g. Deadly Ground), but recently I've encountered opinons to the contrary, and the archive is silent on the matter.

There's nothing on the card, implicit or explicit, that requires his presence if he's canceling "an Action card that targets you, your cards, or your tokens". It's a Reaction, making it immune to Presence and Relevance, and it doesn't mention "this battle" or "opposing" cards or anything like that.

This ruling isn't in the archives because it's a straightforward application of the card and the rulebook.

Question about Kosaten Shiro

It has already been ruled that the reduction of 2 gold takes presidence over the stronghold ability and that Kosaten Shiro players can bring it in for 5 gold like all other Crane strongholds.

No it hasn't. The ruling is the exact opposite of that, and becomes moot anyway with the MRP of Fantastic Gardens that makes the net 5g cost for Crane an unequivocable change from the basic 7. (It says "2 Gold less" instead of "5 Gold".)

Question on targeting

Does habilities that attach followers to the person that has the ability target the personality?

That is a very hard sentence to read, but I think the answer is found in Targeting Rule #2: an action that applies only to its own card does not target.

It has happened that my oponent was using shinjo yokatsu, and gave him a kitsuki kaagi's journal. He said that attaching followers did not target, but based on the rulling that the corrupt jade sliver targets...

Attaching a Follower from your hand does target the Personality receiving it. It can't be done with the Journal.

However, the ability of Yokatsu Inexperienced to pay 3g to get a Cavalry Follower token does not target, by rule #2. It may still be used.

Question about Kosaten Shiro

Well, I guess I am going to have to learn how to read the rulings. What I did, before I asked the question, is :

1 - Went to the web page where the rulings are

2 - hot the Specific Cards and Strongholds 3 - went down alphabetically to find kosaten something

4 - It was not there

5 - So I asked the question to the gurus

next time...... I will hit the search key instead......

Something else you should do is look up every card and Stronghold involved in the question. It wouldn't have helped in this case, but there are others where it does.

Feared Duellist

What I'd like to know is if AEG has plans to release Feared Duellist in a wider format-I'm not asking how or when, just if.

We will eventually release every promo we produce. It just wouldn't make sense not to without a darn good reason.

Masters Imprisoned and Defensive Duty again

Once again, I have people with english problems and Defensive Duty. I told them that the personality you get, does not satisfy presence and they insist that if you have to discard what else is attached to the province, presence is established.

Rather than a curt, short Mr. Obvious answer, would you please state that Defensive Duty personality does not create presence.

*ahem*...

"Cards in Provinces are not in play. The face-up Personality card retrieved with Defensive Duty is not in play and is not a controlled unit. It will not give a player Presence."

How's that?

When "Masters Imprisoned" is played, what happens the next turn to the casting shugenja?

Um...he stays gone? The caster doesn't come back. Only the target.

Hitomi Strikes Her Own Clan!

Tattoos - Dragon Stronghold

Here's where it gets goofy. Take the following example. Vedau with the Dragon Tattoo gets targetted with Lady Moon's Curse: 1) Vedau keeps "Tattooed" Trait. AND 2) Vedau keeps the Dragon Tattoo (from the Dragon Tattoo card..."For the rest of the game, the Personality has a Dragon Tattoo...) AND 3) Vedau loses the ABILITY: "Open: Place up to three 1F/1C Fire tokens on this Personality..." 4) Vedau cannot be given a new Dragon tattoo.

Correct!

Steel Throne

Daigotsu's theft of the Steel Throne. What I am unaware of is when it came back into the possession of the Imperial Court. (If it did at all, that is.)

It hasn't.

Spells, Kino and Innate Abilities

Innate Abilities are considered Spell Effects.

No they aren't. [p. 33]

Heres a question that came up recently

Heres one that came up...

Yogo Tejki Scorpion Clan Shugenja with Ninja trait.

If you use his ability to force a player to loose 2 honor, can it be canceled with investigations? I know any ability on a Shug is an innate ability, just was curious how a ninja/shugenja gets treated.

All actions written on a card that has the "Foo" trait are "Foo" actions. [Example #3, p. 34] Tjeki's action is a Ninja action, and it targets a player. Investigation can nail it.

Question on Kaneka's Blockade

I know that if the revealing player has no wind the event is discarded. What happens if the other player has no wind? Does having no wind make it a different wind? I could've sworn Jeff answered this, but it's neither in the archive or the rulings page.

Having no Wind does not count as having a different Wind. You cannot target an opponent with no Wind with Kaneka's Blockade.

Question 3

\221No Hiding Place\222 Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength.

\221Cascading Fire\222 Elemental Battle: Bow this Shugenja for a Ranged 6 attack. Elemental Battle: Bow this Shugenja for two consecutive Ranged 3 attacks. Elemental Battle: Bow this Shugenja for six consecutive Ranged 1 attacks that cannot be modified.

Question 1: Can I have one of my Shugenja cast \221Cascading Fire\222 for the two or six consecutive Ranged Attacks and as a reaction play \221No Hiding Place\222 and target multiple cards in the defender\222s home?

No. Each No Hiding Place can change the target of exactly one of your ranged attacks.

Question 2: Does a Ranged 0 attack destroy a 0 Force personality and/or follower?

Yes. [p. 63]

Question 3: Does Fear 0 effect 0 Force personalities and/or followers?

Yes. [p. 64]
