Rules for 6 July 2002

Zen Faulkes, sent 7 July 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Questions!!

1) I have Hoshi's Claw on a dragon clan personality. I'm opposed by four crane personalities. One of the Crane personalities dies for some reason and the Crane player plays Be Prepared to Dig Two Graves.

I can't use Hoshi's Claw because it's not a bonus but a stat change.

Wrong. Dark Allies rules, page 31: No distinction between "bonus" and "stat change" exists in L5R.

I can use Hoshi's Claw once because the BPTDTG is one trigger[.]

Wrong. Hoshi's Claw happens "after an opposing Personality gains... a bonus." If more than one Personality gains a bonus, then there is more than one valid trigger.

I can use Hoshi's Claw three times because three personalities are getting force bonuses and therefore that counts as three triggers?

Right.

Personality Joe has Mizu-Do cast on him. Again the Crane uses BPTDTG and has three personalities in the battle...so:

Same answer, because Mizu-do happens "whenever an opposing card gains a... bonus."

Choke the Soul.

I was just rereading the upcoming spell Choke the Soul[...]

Which I can't answer questions about. Sorry.

Some ?'s

First, sorry for not including card text for relevant ?'s :)

Personally, I kind of prefer people *not* include card text, because:

(A) People are not always real precise when typing in text, and wrong text can lead to wrong answers. I'd rather open one of my big, bad reference binders and look at an actual, physical copy of the card.

(B) It's just one more thing I edit out when I compile these posts.

Oracle of Earth used in conjunction with Akodo's Map. Do I need to bow 2 Holdings to satisfy the 2 , 1G costs, or can I use 1 Holding to pay the combined 2G cost ?

Holdings can only pay for one cost (Dark Allies rules, page 42 -- in bold type, even!). There are two costs here: one for the terrain, one for the Oracle's action.

Ambush. Does the Unit initiating the ambush, return to his/her Fief (if successful;-) bowed ?

It's a battle. You walk home, just like always.

Rule for 5 July 2002; L5R gets an Origins award!

What would happen if you played plans with in plans, then your opponent either ambushed you or played the card that ends the open action phase and then attacked (both ways you end up getting your next open action during a battle). Then used Shiro Matsu to make an attack phase?

"Rules Geek, you've been challenged!"

Trying to be tricky, eh? Sorry, you've been beat to the punch. In the Archive, General Rules, Battle, Action Segment:

* If a player is somehow able to take a Limited action during battle (e.g., due to Plans Withing Plans), it must meet the requirements for Presence and Relevance. [JA, 29 March 2002]

Shiro Matsu don't meet that requirement.

"The Rules Geek has successfully defended his medal!"

Rules Questions

Just two questions about Yokubo:

Can a Tower of Asako player effectively cancel Yokubo's second reaction? Meaning, if the Asako player attaches a card to a samurai, then Yokubo reacts, then a shugenja reacts, can Yokubo react again, thus the cancelling is useless?

Dark Allies rules, page 45: A cancelled action never happened, and can be performed again (if all costs can be paid).

On: Yokubo

Is placing a terrain under the Armor of Sun-Tao considered attaching the card? Can Yokubo react to it?

No to both.
