Jeff Alexander, sent 16 April 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Face Me! (Higatsuku)

The effects of the recent targeting ruling keep spreading. Say my Higatsuku uses his ability on someone with higher chi in a battle, bowing and forcing him to challenge. Now, I try to play "Face Me!", which targets both duellists. You can't target your own bowed personality (in this case, Higatsuku) with (re)actions. So does this preclude you from playing the card at all?

It precludes you.

It also has absolutely nothing to do with the new targeting rules. This card targets both duelists because it says it does, so it would have before Gold as well.

I guess what I'm asking is if a card with multiple targets can be used if one of those targets isn't legal

It can't.

Hida Sunao query...

An odd question came up today about Hida Sunao. Here's the relevant text:

Reaction: Discard a card after the end of a battle Sunao was in to straighten him.

The question is, does Sunao have to actually be AT the battle WHEN it resolves to use his reaction.

No. He can have been in it at any time.

Goblin Slingers

I noticed that "Goblin Slingers" from DA have the "Shadowlands" word printed as a non-bold trait.

Is there already an erratum for them, or are they _not_ a Shadowlands card?

It's still a trait. It's a Shadowlands card.

post for 9 April 2002

Now that I think of it...

I'm playing Spawning Ground. Baku no Oni enters play while I have 4 Fate cards. Is he (it? she?) finally 3F/3C, or 2F/2C?

3/3 because its PRINTED numbers change, so you would then add the Spawning Ground's +1/+1 on top of it.

Nightmare ruling

Is this ruling still in effect?:

Nightmare ยท Does not automatically cause Fear to bow Personalities. It overrides immunity, not the rule that Fear only affects Followers. [VRD, 8 November 2000]

Because after playing the card last night, which reads:

Reaction: Play this card when one of your cards creates Fear. The Fear affects Personalities and Followers otherwise immune to Fear.

To me it seems to say that it affects personalities and then followers who are immune to fear...?

"Personalities and Followers" is one phrase. Don't break that sentence into "Personalities" and "Followers otherwise immune to fear" -- that is an incorrect reading.

RULES question

I have a question about the Ring of Fire and Ryokan's Sword and how they interact if a Personality with the Sword is dueling a Personality controlled by a player with the Ring in play..

Ring of Fire: The contoller of any Personality dueling any of your Personalities must play Focus cards face up.

Ryokan's Sword: When this Personality focuses, you may play your Fate deck's top card as the Focus card. Do not look at the card until someone strikes....

Which takes precedence? The Ring which makes your opponent play Focus cards face up? Or the Sword which specifically states that you don't look at it (presumably meaning face down)? I'm inclined to say that the Ring wins out, since the Sword seems to just mean that even the player focusing the cards should have no idea what they are. Clarification for one of my players, however, is desired. Thanks!

They'd be focused face-up due to the Ring. The Sword's player would then see them.

About Daidoji/Yasuki Hachi

This is a question about the crane deck, with the stronglod of the daidoji that reduce the honor requirements of the daidojis by 5. The rulebook says , if the same card is printed two times (diferent expansions...) the last one is that aply to rule them.(that happends with hachi)

That did not happen with Hachi. Yasuki and Daidoji Hachi are two different cards. You simply cannot have more than three of them, combined, in your deck. Both are played exactly as written.

The object of this question is: can i reduce the honor requirement of Yasuki Hachi(the last card printed) with the strongold of the daidoji?

No.

RULES question-slander and stuff.

Here's another one for you. Had two players slugging out an honor game today, and this question came up.

Here's the scenario:

Player 1 is at 41 honor, and it is player 2's turn, he is somewhere around 29 honor. during the action phase, player 1 plays Deeds, Not Words. Player 2 deliberately brings a personality into play for full cost, incurring a 3 point honor loss which he The Wind's Truth's over to player 1. Player 1 plays Slander in response to bringing the personality into play for full gold cost, trying to reduce the gain (and thus the loss) to zero.

My take on this was that because the Deeds, Not Words was in effect, there was never an honor gain from bringing a personality into play, it was a loss, thus he couldn't play Slander. But, is there a window, between the paying full gold cost for the personality and the personal honor being lost that another player can react to the Gain before it turns into a loss?

The gain is converted to a loss by the continuous ongoing effect of Deeds... before it can be negated by Slander. Slander can be legally played but will do nothing.

Kyuden Kitsune

One more query:

I've constructed a Fox clan deck. Now, playing with Kyuden Kitsune, am I technically playing Yoritomo's Alliance, or is it actually Fox Clan?

"Fox Clan" is not a legal alignment Faction. [DA rulebook pp. 34-35] Kyuden Kitsune is a Yoritomo's Alliance stronghold.

This is important, because it does state that Fox Clan personalities cost two less gold for me. Since they are also part of Yoritomo's alliance, does that mean that I can buy them for four less?

Yes. Or 2 less for honor.

Also, do I gain honor if I buy other Yoritomo Alliance personalities for full gold cost (i.e. Tsuruchi)?

Of course.

Also, do cards like Yoritomo Technique and the Trading Port work like they do for Yoritomo players?

Absolutely.

Diplomatic Apprentice

Quick question - can I bow the Apprentice instead of a Shugenja when casting Wind's Truth?

Yes.

Warstasined Fields Q

Region Limited: Once per turn, move one or more Followers between two of your Personalities without bowing the Personalities

Does it target?

Yes.

That is, can I change followers between bowed peeps?

No.

old Koku cert Q (Ray)

Speaking of Koku, are the old WotC Koku certificates from the prize support still valid?

Yes.

Patience + Mushin

Can I play Mushin and pass twice?

No. Mushin's effect is to give you two consecutive actions, and that's what you do unless you can't. If you can't, they don't count as passing.

On: Mushin
Faith In My Clan

Yet another question raised on #l5r...

Can I, as a non-Unicorn player, hire Moto Chagatai exp, Oath of Fealty him, and use him to satisfy the condition for "Faith In My Clan"?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

Ratling Stronghold question

Just a quick question on the Warrens of the Nezumi.

What is the design on the banner?

It's bits and pieces of other Clan Mons.

any misprints this time?

In the Oni's Fury set, there were several cards that were misprinted, such that there were 2 versions of the card. Were any cards misprinted this time in Dark Allies?

Not that I am aware of.

??? on Force Bonuses

Do force bonuses in a battle last until the end of the turn or just until the end of the battle???.

The default length of all effects is until the end of the current turn, unless something says otherwise.

Such as if I use Shiro Matsu's abilty.I rally a personality that I charged twice. Then I attack again, does my person keep the force from the charges???

Yes.

A question on variable honor losses

Here's a question for you:

Ikiryo Text Nonhuman Shadowlands Battle: Bow and destroy Ikiryo to have it make a ranged attack with strength equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. The ranged attack can target a Personality with Followers. Lose Honor equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. Dishonor Ikiryo's Personality.

Is this honor loss a variable one or not? Would Soshi Eiji be able to target this as an honor loss?

It is not variable. Eiji can target it.

A question on variable honor losses

Jeff ruled that a non-variable anything is a value in which you know the number before the action occurs. Since you have no idea what the honor loss for Ikiryo's action will be until you start the action,

Yes you do: it will equal the Personality's Chi. It's not always the same value but it is known at all times.

Rules Q

If I have Sumio and a couple of other cavalry units (Kitao's ability or more Sumios) I can attack with all of them -because they are all assigned simultaneously- right?

Right.

Because Doji Kazo's prohibition against attaching cards includes items, will Blackened Claws still attach if I taint him?

Yes.
