Jeff Alexander, sent 12 April 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Sealed deck question.

I read a tourney report where the person mentioned having recieved 5 Maasaki's, and having 4 of them in play at one time. I thought that sealed allowed you to ignore clan restrictions, but I thought you were still limited to 3 of each non-unique card, and 1 of each unique card. This was why Spirit was so irritating with 3 fixed unique cards. Am I wrong, or what?

Aside from the minimum deck sizes being 30/30 standard instead of 40/40, the deck construction rules in Sealed Deck format are no different. This tournament was apparently run with altered construction rules, which is allowed provided the Tournament Organizer makes the differences known at least 30 days in advance.

Question, Can I use No Hiding Place on Rekai's battle action? ["Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength"] ["Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."] She isn't producing the ranged attack until she is in the battle. Is this legal?

No. No Hiding Place is used before targets are chosen, and Rekai is not "in the current battle" then.

Just to be absolutely clear on this :>

The answer is "No" when she is using her ability to move into the battle, and "Yes" if she is in the battle and uses her ability. Right?

If she's "in the current battle" when she chooses the target for her ranged attack, No Hiding Place is legal. If she's not, it isn't.

Even when a unit is just one Personality card with nothing attached, there's still a distinction between individual card Force and total unit Force. Some card and game effects, like To Do What We Must and the Resolution Step at the end of a battle, care about one, and some, like Test of Might and ranged attacks, care about the other. You need to read the card or the rulebook carefully and decide which kind of Force it refers to. A ranged attack below strength 8 won't kill that samurai.

So does this mean that TDWWM can be used with say, someone with 0F and 1PH, to kill off a unit with a bowed personality?

Yes.

Few Question and Clarifications

I have a few questions (I apologise if they have been answered before):

1.Isawa Hochi’s card states that he can not be kill as a result from a duel if he is the challenger and does not use his ability to focus before the duel. Does this effect also protect him if he is poisoned weaponed to, or below, zero chi?

No. That's dying from having 0 Chi, not dying as the result of a duel.

2.Does Moshi Mogai the “Soul of Kemmei” from DA increase maximum hand size by 3 for each copy in play, so that if you have all three out you have a wopping +9?

Yes. [DA rulebook p. 32]

3.Deep Earth Sanctum allows you to reveal elemental rings in hand to increase hand size by the same amount until the end of the turn. A) Is this just an increase in maximum hand size, or B) Do you also draw cards equal to the number of ring revealed.

A)

"Arrow Knows the Way" Question

I've been looking for an answer at the acumulated rulings about what happens if "Arrow Knows the Way" (or No Hiding Place) is cancelled by "Fall on Your Knees" or another cancelling effect, and I found this:

"If an effect makes the announced target of an action illegal, the action has no effect. You do not pick a new target. [JA, 9 February 2001] "

Looking at this sentence, I can see that the ranged attack will have no effect. Is this correct? Or the reaction is cancelled before the target is chosen?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.
