post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2
Has the "actions regarding Personalities in duels don't target becasue there's only ever one Personality being effected" ruling been changed?
It's been overridden by the redefinition of targeting in the Gold Edition rulebook.
Performing rules
Hey there,
DA introduced the long-awaited performing rules, p.43, introducing the notion that now, actions on items, spells and ancestors are performed by the personnality they are attached to.
Question :
Is an action "performed" by a personnality considered one of the Personality's actions ? Namely, can we just have an example of the interaction with the p.24 rule, "While a card or stronghold is bowed, none of its actions can be used, not even ones that don't require bowing to perform" ?
To put it into words, is it still legal, under the performing rule, to use an action on an unbowed item attached to a bowed personnality, if that action does not target the personnality and does not require bowing as a cost ?
The definition of "perform" doesn't change any existing rules. It's only there so when a card says something like, "When a Personality performs an action, cancel it," everyone has the same idea what that means.
Rules questions that came up at Dark Allies Pre-release
I had a couple of questions come up at a recent DA pre-release tournament I ran, and would like to know if I made that right call.
The first one, and the one that pertains strictly to the Gold environment, is if Isawa Nakamuro and a couple other units (Doesn't matter who for this one) are at home and not assigned to battle, can Nakamuro redirect a ranged attack targeting one of those units via "No Hiding Place"? I ruled no, because Nankamuro says "army" which in the definition says attacking or defending...was that the right call?
It was. Nakamuro is not in an army when he's home.
Also the other question came up regarding open play and Ranbe vs. the Soul of Ranbe. Should you choose to play with the old Ranbe does he have the Naval trait and the minimum of 1 restriction on his trait regarding attaching Osano-Wo cards? I would think that Ranbe would not be naval and would still attach the Osano-Wo cards for free, right?
In Open play, the original Ranbe is played as written.
Destroying spells.
The rulings archive has, under spells,
* For spells that destroy themselves (or remove themselves from play), the spell's destruction is always a cost. [JA, 8 October 2000]
Under Costs, it says,
* Effects that occur instead of some effect (e.g., using Decoy instead of destroying a Personality) will not meet cost requirements, unless card text specifically states that it can (e.g., Acquiring Favor). [JA, 11 January 2001; 18 March 2002]
Also, Scribe * Reads, "Scribe +1F/+1C 0HR 7G -PH 2FV Scribe can only be attached to a Shugenja. Reaction: Bow Scribe and pay the gold cost of any spell as it is being destroyed to attach that spell to the Scribe's unbowed Shugenja rather than destroying it. This may only be done once per spell per Scribe." [MRP, Obsidian Edition] * Can save spells that are being destroyed in any way, not just by being cast. [DW, 27 August 1996]
Natsune says, Isawa Suma (C Personality [TOV]): 2F 3C 7H 8G 2PH * Phoenix Clan Shugenja. Spells attached to Suma that destroy themselves when cast are not destroyed. Instead, Suma loses Chi equal to half the spell's focus value (rounded up) permanently.
So, both Scribe and Isawa Suma prevent the destruction of spells when they're cast, but neither explicitly says that the cost is still paid. By current wording and the accumulated rulings, Suma is completely useless and the only use for Scribe is to prevent someone else's spell being cast, by preventing its destruction.
Both of these interpretations seem to be nuts, any chance of a clarification/ruling, Jeff?
Neither of these effects invalidate the cost of destroying the Spell. (I always breathe a sigh of relief when I see it's old cards causing problems like this.0
Rules Question
Unprepared: Reaction: Play after one of your Personalities with both an Armor and Weapon enters a duel with a Personality who does not have both. The duel resolves immediately. Your Personality wins.
Now, I would think this is pretty clear cut, but I got into a discussion about this with someone. My Personality has both an Armor and a Weapon. In order for this card to work, must the Personality I'm entering a duel *against* not have neither a Weapon nor Armor attached? Or does this card mean that as long as they have one or the other (or no items at all), but don't have both, I'll win the duel?
You can play it if the other Personality has just one of the two or has neither.
One simple question (I hope) that needs answering
Hello all,
Could someone please tell me what this FOO rule is? We have players here that have been playing from Imperial Edition and never heard of this rule at all.
Odd. You must all not read rulebooks much. It was in there from Shadowlands to Spirit Wars.
It's the old name for what is now called the Keyword Rule.
One simple question (I hope) that needs answering
The FOO rule was a rule that worked out traits. If something had the word "FOO" in the title, it was a "FOO" card. Example, the deafening war drums of fu leng were considered a fu leng card. If a card had the bold faced "FOO" in the text box, it was a "FOO" card. But, if something was a "Imperial FOO" it was not considered to be a "FOO" card, though it would be considered an "Imperial" card.
Er, not quite right. For a brief time, a word didn't count if it followed the word "of" in the text box.
Imperial Herald here on 4-08-02.. AEG kicks but again.
I'd very much like to see a 30 day waiting period before Koku orders are processed for IA members with the 1 copy of each card per order applying to the first 60 days.
There is already a 1 copy of each card per order maximum.
another face me question
Face Me! Rarity/EditionU Dark Allies TextReaction: Play after one of your challenged Personalities enters a duel and target both duelists. Replace their Chi with their Personal Honor until the duel ends. Gold0 Focus3
Personality A has 3 Chi, and 1 ph and a Weapon attached (Wakizashi +1C) total chi = 4 If I duel this personality and play face me, the Chi of this personality is 2 (1ph + 1C from the wakizashi) or 1?
Dark Allies rulebook, p. 32:
"It is possible to set a card's value directly to a particular number. Do not apply any bonuses or penalties already in effect to this new number--in essence, they're already part of it."
Answer: 1.
Ring of Earth
Is this combo to put Ring of earth into play legal?:
The Wandering Monk + Dragon's Claw Katana + Veteran Samurai (Pass turn) Give control of The Wandering Monk to the other player (bowed), target Veteran Samurai with Brash Hero, target The Wandering Monk with Shinsei's Smile (uuuuuffffffff!!!!!!). The Wandering Monk must attack, pump him, send home and play RING OF EARTH VERSUS ANY PLAYER.
It's legal.
Face me! ponderings...
Here's something I was just thinking about...
Face Me! replaces someone's PH with Chi. Does this mean current or printed? I assume it's Chi,
Do you mean current or printed?
(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)
SomeDishonoredDudeWithCelestialSword challenges SomeGuyWithPH2. I play Face Me!...now, since DishonoredDude's Chi is now 0, does that mean that the Celestial Sword bonus is included in his PH when he dies? In some cases, that's 5-15 PH replacement, which means a 5-15 Honor loss when DishonoredDude dies. Is this right?
No. Dishonorable death causes a loss equal to printed Personal Honor, which Face Me! does not change.
New Herald
Is it true that the new Herald has the Warrens, and SW rares are availible for Koku?
Yes and yes.
Ranged question
Hi all ! Just a quick question : if I produce a ranged X attack, modify it with 'No hiding place' to hit a personality outside of battle with a ranged X-1 attack, then discard a 'whistling bulb arrow' to shoot someone else, do I : a) shoot someone in battle with a ranged X ? b) shoot someone in battle with a ranged X-1 ? c) shoot someone outside of battle with a ranged X-1 ? d) shoot myself in the foot for not reading the rulebook ?
b)
DA Shadowlands Question
For Baku no Oni, a */* for 6 gold that when entering play, gains force and chi equal to hald the cards in your hand, rounded down, can you use him in conjunction with Forgotten Tombs to bring him in right away for free?
If you're not playing the Spawning Grounds, yes. If you are, you have to wait a turn because the Oni is 1/1.
