A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Shiryo no Tadaka Question

If I control a personality with an attached Shiryo no Tadaka, and then use Tadaka's ability during battle, can I prevent getting my personality destroyed using the Towers of Asako and still destroy an opposing personality?

No, because the Shiryo no Tadaka targets both at the same time. (The Towers works with Isawa's Last Wish because the Wish causes your Personality to be targeted distinctly after the opposing card is destroyed.)

Buncha questions that I hope some of you may answer

Unfortunately, this is not correct. Since there is only one end of a resolution segment to a battle in which you're being attacked, only one Counterattack can be played. By the time you'd play the second Counterattack, too many actions will have passed for you to react to the proper 'trigger'.

A trigger cannot become invalid because "too many actions have passed". If a Reaction does not negate, undo, or otherwise somehow invalidate the trigger as part of its costs or effects, taking it will not prevent subsequent reactions to that same trigger. It will still be there.

Another Face Me! Question

Actually, more of a clarification. Does Face Me! trump Geisha Assassin? I'm presuming yes, since the Assassin has no Personal Honor value, and therefore is considered to have 0 PH by default.

Face Me! would cause the Geisha Assassin Personality to die instantly.

Yuya Qstn.

With Asoko Yuya, if you have a spell and Spirit Guide attached, can you choose to bow Yuya to cast the spell, then straidhten her, then bow the spell?

Yes.

That would make her even sicker.

Not much worse than a Spirit Guide on any shugenja, really.

Moto Feng Question

Question for the rules guys:

Can Moto Feng's reaction be used when playing a Deadly Ground?

No. Without an explicit "but before it resolves" clause, Reactions taken "AFTER a Terrain is played" will also occur after an Immediate Terrain resolves.

Dark Allies questions

2.) Do reactions to battle actions count as actions for the purpose of Snowy Fields? (Feng again.)

Reactions are actions, so they'll count as actions for Snowy Fields. Heck, they count as actions, period. They ARE actions. That's why they count as... Woah. Now I'm dizzy. In short: "yes".

3.) Can I use One Sword to move to a defender's province that has no units but does have a Garrison?

Yes.

4.) Can I target a Veteran Samurai with Brash Hero? (Is the Veteran Samurai considered to have less than 3 Chi?)

My copy says "0" in the Chi lantern, and 0 is less than 3, so, yes.

Can a Veteran Samurai be targeted with For The Empire? Can a Veteran Samurai say "Enough Talk!"?

No and no. Followers are not legal targets for challenges (giving or receiving) or moving into duels. Dueling can only happen between Personalities without explicit card text otherwise.

Can it be dishonored with Marries a Barbarian?

Yes.

Can a Veteran Samurai say "He's Mine"?

No. See two paragraphs up.

Can a Veteran Samurai commit Honorable Seppuku if he can be dishonored, and how much Honor do I gain for that?

Yes. You gain his printed Personal Honor (treat it as 0).

And by the rule of Foo, do these rulings also apply to Samurai Warriors and Samurai Cavalry?

Yes. They have ever since Imperial Edition.

Yeesh. Why did people wait five years to ask these questions? I know it's Tax Time, but I didn't figure procrastination was that contageous.

5.) If I use Honor's Lesson Dojo after all players have passed, may I use the action to immediately pass again (for example, to pump Patience)?

No. The Dojo's effect is to let you take an Open or Battle action. You must do one if able. If you don't, it does not count as passing.

6.) Asako Misao has Teeth of Osano-Wo and a Whistling Bulb Arrow attached. He is in a battle and casts the Teeth for 3 ranged 3 attacks. If I destroy the Whistling Bulb Arrow, does he make one more ranged 3 attack or 3 more ranged 3 attacks?

One more Ranged 3 Attack.

7.) If I so choose, can I name "twelve" when using the Blade of Truths?

Yes.

8.) Can I use the Akodo Map to pump the focus value of a terrain before I play it as a Tactician bonus?

No. Discarding a card from your hand for a Tactician force bonus is not "playing" that card.

9.) Mirumoto Zenko has two Shinsei's Staffs. The Staffs reduce all focus values to no more than three - Zenko's ability reduces all Focus values by two. Which goes off first? Does it mean that all focus values are reduced by 2 (and if they're higher than 3, promptly reduced to 3)? Or does it mean that they're reduced to 3, then reduced by 2 to 1?

Both reductions attempt to occur at the same time (when the card is focused), so the active player chooses which happens first.

The fact that one reduction is due to a trait and the other is due to a Reaction (which has an effect for the duration of the duel) does not matter here because the Reaction itself is not racing with the trait.

10.) Tokens count as cards for a lot of things. Will Doji Kazo attach tokens?

Token Followers are the only type of token which automatically counts as both a token and a card. [DA rulebook p. 44] All other tokens may attach to Kazo...unless, of course, the thing that creates those tokens explicitly says they're cards, thus invoking the First Cardinal Rule.

11.) We had an discussion about this at the pre-release: Hida Kosho does not specify an "opposing" unit but merely an "attacking" one. Does that mean he doesn't have to be in the battle to initiate his duel, so long as you have a unit there to satisfy the rule of Presence?

That is correct.

Creating a Clan Champion?[Jeff]

Hi list, hi rules gurus!

When rading the new card "Faith in My Clan" I had an idea and wanted to know if it is in accordance with the rules.

Scenario:

1.I have a peep inplay who reads: X Clan Champion 8with me playing clan Y) 2. On my tirn I play "Oath of fealthy, aligning the aforementioned peep to my clan.

Now the question: Will the peep now be an Y clan champion, thereby allowing me to use "Faith in my Clan" when he id assigned to a battle? From reading the cards I would say yes, thougn it is not very logical to say that the e.g. the Crab Champion becomes the Crane Champion somply because he is "adopted" into the Crane Clan. On the othe hand it seems quite logical that say e.g. a Jade Champion (again possibly a Crab in the expierienced Utagu) would lose his Jade Champion trait simply because he became say a Crane.

2nd question: Is a Daimyo (Exp. 2 Morito comes to mind) the same as a champion?

No.

3rd question: When playing an Oath of Fealthy on Morito (Exp. 2) does he become: a) a Y Clan Daimyo b) a Y Clan , Ox Clan Daimyo, since Ox Clan is not a faction in the rules?

b)

4th question: his came to my mind when reading the new targeting rules concerning bowed peeps: Can I play Oath of Fealthy when one of the peeps in my fief not aligned to my clan is bowed? If would assume yes, as I can not decide which peeps to target with the Oath of Fealthy and it therefore does not target, but I want to make sure.

You may play it. Oath of Fealty has a global effect and is therefore untargeted.

Honor's Lesson Dojo Question

Honor's Lesson Dojo Reaction: Bow after all Players pass consecutively in a battle and before delayed terrains resolve to perform one Battle or Open action.

Can Honor's Lesson Dojo be used if there is no Terrain in Play?

Yes. It refers to the step wherein Delayed Terrains, in general, resolve.

Dark Allies Question

I know that if there is no stated duration that bonuses go away at the end of the turn but what about granted traits?

DA rulebook, p. 43:

"If an effect does not say how long it lasts, it wears off when the current turn ends."

The actual rule makes no indication of applying only to stat bonuses.

Voice of the Shiryo gives either the Double Chi or Tactician trait with no stated duration. Is it permanent or until the end of the turn?

End of turn.

Veteran Samurai question [JEFF, ZEN, VAUGHN, DAVE]

It appears as though Veteran Samurai, after our recent pre-release, is already opening a can of worms in my area - especially for cards that target Samurai, but do not state Samurai Personalities.

Mmmm. Stale worms.

Command Group

Legal.

Hitomi Technique

Legal. If you are a Dragon Clan player, the Veteran Samurai's Chi would go from "0" to "1", not "+1", and so would not add to its Personality's Chi.

Stand or Run

Not legal. It's a challenge.

Takuan Technique

Irrelevant. Though it's a samurai, Veteran Samurai is not an "Unaligned Samurai". Takuan Technique can't target it.

The Touch of Shinsei

Legal.

Unfettered Attack

Legal.

You Walk With Evil

Legal.

questions

Can Rekai xp2, or any other personality with 3+ chi performing an RA *that does not bow them* (ie with Annekusai's Feather, The Great Climb, etc.) use the Arrow Knows the Way to modify their RA to hit the opposing personality behind their follower?

No.

But pay careful attention to the card that lets you shoot without bowing. Some say you don't bow, others say you don't NEED TO bow. For the latter, you still can if you want to.

If I fire off Tsuruchi's range 4 attack and then straighten him with Inner Fire can he use his range 4 again when The Great Climb resolves? (if it resolves, and is not destroyed.)

Using a Ranged Attack earlier in the battle does not preclude you from using it during the Great Climb's resolution. (Although, as a counterpoint to the first answer, the fact that he's been straightened with Inner Fire will prevent you from voluntarily bowing him to fire during the Terrain.)

This has probably been asked before,

Actually, it hasn't.

but here goes: With Iaijustu Lesson, This has probably been asked before, but here goes: With Iaijustu Lesson, weapons like Naginata, Wakizashi, etc. don;t contribute their chi, correct?

Correct.

You just use the straight "naked" chi value on the personality cards?

That plus any bonuses, traits, duel-related effects, etc. that aren't from Items, like +1C from Fortress of the Dragonfly or the Double Chi trait from the Kiho of the same name.
