Jeff Alexander, sent 16 March 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Way of deception question???

Does" way of deception" target???

It targets both units.

Is "use of Tactician" a cost? [Jeff]

I was thinking about Ikoma Fujimaro the other day and wondering...

If his ability gets cancelled (say, by the Phoenix SH or Flee the Darkness) can he use it again at the next opportunity? This question hinges on whether "This is a use of the Tactician trait" is a cost. I realize that it isn't worded that way, though something odd comes up if it isn't:

It's not a cost. If a Tactician action is canceled, it doesn't count towards the "one Tactician action per battle" limit.

If "Tactician" isn't a cost, Fujimaro can use his ability even if he loses the Tactician trait (to, say, Doubt). Maybe not a big deal, but it could open up a few ruling holes later on.

Actions which count as a use of Tactician may not be taken if the Personality does not have that trait.

Ranged Attack Rules Question

Greetings-

I was looking in the archives about ranged attacks and got this:

A combined ranged attack does not acquire targeting restrictions written as part of the action (e.g., "This may may target a Personality with attached Followers"). [JA, e-mail, 26 July 2001]

I'm afraid that I am confused by it. Does this mean that the resulting combination between a normal ranged attack and one that has the fewer restrictions (the phrase in quotes above is not a restriction, it is actually a loosening of restrictions) may still target a Personality with attached Followers?

It means targeting restrictions aren't considered traits of the Ranged Attack, like Elemental and Kiho are. I'm not sure what that ruling was issued in reference to anymore, but it sounds like someone was trying to pull something really technical and tricky with a pedantic reading of the rules.

(partial spoiler)New Phoenix Stronghold

Hello, I was looking at the spoiler for the new Phoenix stronghold. According to the text on it (which could be changed before release, according to Jeff) the cost reductions for spells, is on the ones you own. Does this mean that you would have to have a copy of that spell in play on someone you control to get a reduction on another copy of that spell if you bring it into play?

"Own" (actually, "owner") is defined in the Glossary. You own a card if it was in your deck when the game began. Where it is now and whether it's in play don't matter.

If someone asks you what month is National Rulebook Appreciation Month, say "March!"

Seppun sensei + Rise from the ashes

If I am playing with Seppun Sensei and I play Rise from the Ashes after winning some honor, does Rise negate that honor gain?

Seppun Sensei will prevent Rise From the Ashes from negating your Honor gains from earlier in the turn, but it will not prevent the lingering effect of preventing players from gaining Honor for the rest of the turn, as those changes are automatic. Seppun Sensei only applies to voluntary changes.

post for 14 March 2002 / Just another Citadel of Daigitsu question

In a message dated 3/14/02 10:56:24 PM Central Standard Time, writes:

<< >(3) If I have a dayiku on an Shinjo Maku, can I combine their ranged attacks.

Yes.

Now the question is, can you combine the ranged from an item that doesn't bow the personality with one on the personality?

Forwarded to the Rules Team.

The above two answers are inconsistent.

I need to make doubly sure that the Rules Team is all in agreement on whether the rules regarding combined ranged attacks care about which card is "performing" the attacks versus which cards they're coming from. I personally think it's the latter, and that's the way it's always been read, but it won't hurt to check.

There is a precedent to look towards on this issue: Mirumoto Taiu, from APC. Battle: Once per battle, make a Ranged 2 attack without bowing. Battle: Bow for a ranged 4 attack.

Now, I'd go look up the accumulated rulings to see if he can add his 2 RA to his 4 RA, but I can't seem to find the site. Can anyone take it from here?

This is clearly prohibited, as both ranged attacks are definitely coming from the same card and the rules state that only ranged attacks from different cards can be combined. [AOF rulebook p. 63]

Taiu just happens to have the situation provided by the Dai-kyu (and I think the Nage-Yari) all on one card.

The two situations are not analogous. They do not automatically get the same answer.
