Jeff Alexander, sent 19 December 2001 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

post scriptum for 18 December 2001

Are you targeting your personality to bow them when SATW is played against you?

Yes.

If I play Inner Fire to straighten my bowed personality, and my opponent then plays Stand against me. My only personality eligible to be bowed is the one I just unbowed with Inner Fire. Is that personality then bowed due to Stand's second clause/effect?

Yes.

Inner Fire

Can you play Inner Fire when the only unit you have in the battle is bowed?

Sure. Bowed units still count towards the Rule of Presence.

copying rules

If you were to copy akasha's ability with shapeshifter shosro actor whould you be able to gain the same trait twice on the copieing card

You could gain the same benefit turn after turn, yes.

Alternate Tsuno Takuma wording

I had previously thought that the alternate versions of all 3 misprinted cards must have been in the starter decks, vs. the boosters, but this must not be the case. Where was this version of Takuma (the non-token version) available?

Apparently, there actually aren't two versions of Tsuno Takuma, which renders the ruling unnecessary in its case.

P.S. Why was Jeff's ruling to just play all cards as printed?

Because that's what was done last time this sort of error occurred, and that's the result of applying the MRP rule as best it can be applied.

One version of Taking the Wall is obviously superior to the other. Why not just issue errata, like was done for Slaughter the Scout?

Errata is undesirable, plain and simple. The more errata we issue, the more cards don't do what they say they do.

Slaughter the Scout is a special case. One of its two wordings renders the card not simply weaker, but utterly unplayable. That particular version would have received a clarifying ruling regardless of the existence of additional versions.

Double chi question?

I challenge my oponent shugenja to a duel? He acepts and then bows to use the double chi kiho on itself, I say that he can“t target his own bowed personalities with actions. He says he can how does this work?

He can't target his own bowed Personalities with his own actions. However, his shugenja is not bowed yet when he targets himself with the Kiho, so he is not breaking the rules.

Yojiro

Y'know, this issue has gone back and forth, one way and then the opposite, since he was printed.

Incorrect. It has reversed exactly once.

As a suggestion, if there is ever another printing of Yojiro state the "takes effect before honor gains" part right on the card.

That would imply that Yojiro works differently than similar cards like the Ki-Rin's Shrine.

Yokubo rules questions (Jeff, Vaughn, etc.)

I'm pretty sure I know the answers to these but I just want to hear an official answer.

Yokubo 4F/6C -/13/0 Unaligned Onisu of Desire . Nonhuman . Cavalry . Shadowlands . Unique . Lose 5 Honor. Reaction: Once per turn, negate a challenge against Yokubo. Reaction: Once per turn, after a target Personality attaches a card, destroy all other cards already attached to the Personality

1) In a battle, I play Street to Street. The S2S is destroyed. My opponent attaches 2 (or more) followers to one of his personalities. If I use Yokubo's second reaction on that personality, how many of the followers, if any, are destroyed.

None. None were already on the Personality when the rest attached.

1.5) My opponent bows two personalities to move multiple cards between them. If each personality attaches 2 or more cards, how many are destroyed if I use Yokubo's second reaction on one of the personalities?

None of the ones that moved, and all of the ones that you kept on their original Personalities.

2) My opponent pays 2 gold to attach a Farmlands follower to one of his Personalities. Does this count as attaching a card since Follower and Item tokens count as cards at the end of a battle.

Follower and Item tokens do not count as cards at the end of a battle. Follower tokens count as cards (as well as tokens) at ALL times. Item tokens count only as tokens at all times. (Both these rules are in the rulebook and are, as usual, overridable by explicit card text.)

That being said, yes, it counts as attaching a card.

3) I play Ninja Thief and move my Tessen to my opponent's Personality. Does this count as his/her personality attaching a card? Can I use Yokubo's second reaction to destroy all the cards already attached to that personality?

Yes and yes.
