A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Yoritomo Yukue exp

Hey there,

Yoritomo Yukue exp states : "name a Clan other than your own" to get a discount benefit on said clan.

Since Gold Edition and the differenciation of Clan and Faction, this raises some questions :

There is no difference, really. "Faction" means what "Clan" used to: an alignment listed in the rulebook. The term was changed so we would no longer have to say nonsensical things like, "Crab Clan is a Clan, and Naga is a Clan, but Fox Clan isn't a Clan."

A) Should we read "Clan" as in "Clan" in Gold edition, thus being able to name "Wasp", or "Hare" for example, but not "Nezumi" nor "Spirit"

B) Should we read "Clan" as in "Clan" pre-Gold edition, thus being able to name "Wasp", "Hare", or even "Nezumi" and "Spirit"

C) Should we read "Clan" as in "Faction" in Gold edition, thus being able to name "Nezumi" and "Spirit" but not "Wasp" nor "Hare"

C (except it's "Ratling", not "Nezumi"). And B should be the same as C is.

Experienced non-Personalities (was: AOF Preview - Ki Rin's

Shrine)

I know this is a rare situation, but with experienced holdings (or any other types of cards that can stay out) are you able to overlay them at no cost? Do they keep their old abilities just like personalities as well?

Experienced non-Personality cards follow the same rules as Personalities (Gold/APC rulebook p. 35). So, yes (if they're only one level higher) and yes.

Help - Alderac's Online Store e-mail

Hi. I am trying to contact Alderac regarding their online store, but the address they give (ZMadHse@aol.com) doesn't work. Can anyone tell me where I can reach them regarding a purchase I made?

That's the right address. All I can say for now is give it another try.

Season of the ???

By the way, since AEG has announced there will be 8 season promos, and one of them's the Mantis, what other gold faction other then the Nezumi will be getting shafted?

We are, at the very least, going to do all eight Factions in Gold Edition, plus Mantis. That's nine. Where did you see eight?

Seeds of War..

I know it was posted that crane won seeds of war in terms of points and participation (with phoenix having the least participation) but is there any chance we could see the results in detail? and when we will be seeing fiction for it?

I don't think Ray wants to release detailed results. This particular tournament's fiction will be in the next Herald, which is a slightly longer delay than we're planning on having for most of our storyline fiction.

Official Ruling Requested - Kolat Master vs. Kolat Duplicate

If I play Kolat Master on one of my opponents' Daidoji Rekai, and his Kolat Duplicate resolves, and he selects Rekai, would she go into my deck and be free, or his?

His, since he's Rekai's owner.

Test of the Emerald Champion

Isawa Hochiu Phoenix Clan Shugenja. Experienced. If Hochiu is the challenger in a duel, he cannot die as a result of the duel unless he uses the following ability. Elemental Reaction: Hochiu focuses once upon entering a duel. This action may be used while Hochiu is bowed.

Does Hochiu automatically win a Test of the Emerald Champion even if he loses in any number of duels since he never dies?

Provided you never use his reaction, you automatically get the extra Province, yes. Keep in mind you won't gain any honor if you don't fight and win any of the duels.

What happens if I play He's Mine on my challenger? Who leaves play - the original personality or the one who replaced him?

The Personality you originally nominated as your "champion".

Dumb Question about Acquiring Favor

Since I found nothing in the archive: Is discarding the favor a cost using the favor?

If you're discarding the Favor "to" do something, yes.

So can I play Acquiring Favor instead of discarding the favor?

If you're discarding it to pay for something. That's exactly what the card was made for. What you can't do is something like play Acquiring Favor when your opponent lobbies to take the Favor away from you in order to keep the Favor. Discarding it is not a cost in that instance.

Dumb newbie question

Hi. I really need help with this, because I am getting seriously confused here.

I left L5R right after Honor Bound, for reasons of economic nature. :)

Now I'm trying to get back in, and so have been trying to find out what is out there to buy. Seeing as most people is playing gold legal now, I decided to catchup on the gold collections. This means Gold Edition, A Perfect Cut, An Onis Fury when it comes out, the HOR set I cannot buy because I am not in the assembly, and that's it. But I call an online store and buy 6 different Gold Ed+clan decks and they tell me that there are only 3. Then I go to alderac page and download the gold checklist, only to find out 16! strongholds in GE, two in+SW (is this spirit wars? where do I get this, it seems noone carries it anymore) and one in HOR. APC doesn't have the card types, but I believe it has 3 clans, crab crane and scorpion.

This is a mess... can anyone please help me? :)

Gold Edition has eight Clan Deck faction boxes, each of which has two different Strongholds included. That's where the figure of 16 comes from. These 16 include two of the three Strongholds from Spirit Wars, so you don't need to look for SW (at least for Strongholds). Heroes of Rokugan has one, which will be reprinted someday. A Perfect Cut has three brand new ones in deck boxes (Crane, Crab, and Scorpion) plus a fouth dual-aligned Crab/Crane one packed only as a random rare card. That gives a current grand total of 21. An Oni's Fury will have three more brand new ones for Dragon, Unicorn, and Shadowlands.

Yasuki Hachi Exp.

Well, none, since Hachi exp says "any", not "another". So it's really :

- straighten or bow a holding controlled by any player - straighten or bow a stronghold controlled by any player

Absolutely correct.
