Jeff Alexander, sent 2 November 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Multiplayer tournaments = collusion?

I'd have to say that it's damn near impossable for any multiplayer game to not have things in it that at least look like collusion. In most games, if I'm not in a position to win, I'm at least in a position to determine who wins if there are 5 or fewer players. If I help someone, that's collusion. If I don't help someone, that's also cullusion because I was helping their opponent by my inaction. I don't see how it can be avoided.

KINGMAKING IS NOT COLLUSION. Kingmaking because you and the fellow you helped win had a secret agreement to do so already in place before the game began because the two of you are buddies -- THAT is collusion.

Timeframe for receiving Herald? [Ray, AEG]

I haven't received my Herald yet, but I know my address is good as I've gotten flyers for the Seasons. Is there a certain length of time before we should start getting upset? Or should I rant and rave now? :)

customerservice@alderac.com or aegjoe@alderac.com should both work once you feel you've waited a reasonable length of time.

Mixed News for the Crane Hawks [RICH, SHAWN, et al]

How many mainline characters have committed seppeku in the name of honor in Rokugan? How many have been spared seppeku because their "lord" deemed their life more valuable than HONOR?

People who were saved (my memory is definitely spotty on this subject):

*Daidoji Uji* Otaku Kamoko (I think. At least, by Yokatsu, who was a KM and so not very reliable in the bushido department.) Daughter of Mirumoto Sukune that I can't remember the name of (not a main character, I think)

Hida Kisada.

Clan Hosing

When players can't agree on which clan is dominant, I really have to wonder if there's truly a disparity.

Jeff, you really don't have to wonder.

Alright. Perhaps I don't need to wonder whether there's a disparity. But I do need to figure out how big it is, which clans it's between, whether it's regional or global, and whether it pertains more to top-level tournaments or more mundane play...among other things. I also have to figure out if it's due to what the cards do, how they're being played, or which ones are going into decks. I can only change the first, but the three are synergistic.

I would, however, like to point out that nothing happens during battle resolution which is a valid trigger for seppuku's "reaction".

By the way that you are saying that Ambush allows you to commit seppuku once it is known that an honor loss will occur, once it hits battle resolution and the honor loss is known, doesn't that constitute the same trigger?

Seppuki's trigger is performing an action, being targeted by an action, or making a decision, that causes an honor loss. Dying doesn't fit any of those. Nor does simply being in a losing army.

Then how is it possible for a Samuari to commit sepukku when your opponent plays peasant defense?

Fair enough. This is something else the Rules Team is going to get consulted on. The definion of seppuku has tightend up in Gold Edition from previous expansions (though it's actually looser than in Spirit Wars).

No matter what becomes of that ruling, though, it will still be impossible, just like it's always been impossible, to commit seppuku to reduce the loss caused by the samurai's own dishonorable death.

Any chance of LBS coming back

Is there any chance that AEG will revive Legend of the Burning Sands?

No.

Question re: IA membership ...

Hi guys,

to anyone who knows the answer to this one, I received my Imperial Herald two days ago but I've never received a membership card. Has AEG stopped issuing them?

AEG has not issued any since getting back the property, but we are planning on making new ones for everyone and sending them out once we research the best way to get them made.

Subsribing to this list

a friend of mine is trying to subscribe to this list, he is on the darkedge list, while the majority of the descussions are still on the WotC server's list and was wondering when the lists would be merged so that he would recieve all of the posted questions and remarks.

As soon as darkedge gives us the A-OK that they can handle the load. The recent external network problems that affected our website set them back in their schedule.
