A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Deeds, Not Words
Am I correct in thinking that Brilliant Victory is unaffected by Deeds, Not Words, but the honour gain from Historian or Famous Poet becomes a loss? Or are they all losses, or all gains?
All are separate gains, not increases to the battle's gain. All would become losses.
Cancelled Reactions
APC Rulebook, p45: "If an action is canceled, it does not count as having been taken (or even attempted)."
APC Rulebook, p48: "Each printed instance of a Reaction can be used only once per trigger."
Which of these wins?
The first one.
For example, if Doji Kuwanan exp2's Reaction is canceled, by Fall On Your Knees or The Sun Returns, can it immediately be re-used on the same use of Tactician?
Yes.
Ruling Needed
This is with regards to the new Dragon shugenja.
Tamori Chieko Dragon Clan Shugenja - Tattooed When Chieko enters play, you may discard a Fate card to draw a card. [...] Now, does this mean that Chieko with the Crane Tattoo will activate her enter play ability every time she comes 'back from the dead'?
Yes. Returning to play includes "entering play" as a part of it.
Was Replies to the 8th now Minor Illusions.
Does it give the shadowlands the power to crush most or all of deck archetypes in the gold edition ? YES
I think you're blowing things a little out of proportion. "Crush most or all deck archetypes in Gold Edition"? They get to discard ONE Fate card from your hand per game. (They've always been able to look at your entire Fate hand, turn after turn, with the Ninja Spy, who is even one gold cheaper.)
Was Replies to the 8th now Minor Illusions.
How many times do I have say "because that would be banning a card"?
I don't see it as a banning. How is it a banning?
The card has been legal in a heavily-played tournament format. It would no longer be legal if the bug were removed.
If you have never reprinted Taeruko and Finding the Harmony, would they have been banned, because they were not reprinted in gold?
They would not have been banned in the sense of removing them from the environment after allowing them in for a short time.
Do you seriously think we won't play open decks anymore?
The decision was not made by considering the Open environment exclusively. I'm sorry that you feel that's equivalent to abandoning it.
At this point I'm doing nothing except repeat my earlier decisions and rationale, so I'm going to bow out of the discussion.
Rule_of_Relevance & Reactions / Rule_of_Relevance & Reactions
snip
Sneak Attack happens before the Battle Action Segment. Yes.
Well, if Sneak Attack is exempt because of when it is played, and Fall on Your Knees can be used to cancel Sneak Attack, it falls to say that Fall on Your Knees does not need to satisfy Relevance or Presence when when cancelling Sneak Attack, because Sneak Attack does not need to satisfy Relevance and Presence.
Sneak Attack, by the Most Recent Printing, is played at the start of the Battle Action Segment, not before. Sneak Attack therefore does need to satisfy Presence, as does Fall On Your Knees (currently).
Superior Strategist - Toturi's Tactics Q
I asked this one a while ago and it must have been lost in the wash. I have always liked to recycle my SS's with TT. Does this work? Does my SS go straight to the top of the Fate deck after playing TT before I fetch the Open or Battle action......meaning it gets shuffled away, making the whole exercise pointless? Or does SS resolve after the fetched action is pulled and itself resolved (the wording in the accumulated rulings used to say that playing the fetched action was part of SS's effect), meaning I can return SS to the top of the deck with TT after shuffling? Confusing but relevant.
The shuffling is the last part of Superior Strategist's effect. Toturi's Tactics doesn't get played until all of SS's effects resolve, so it goes on after the shuffling.
Rules question.
I'd like to know if the Yogo Asami's ability may be used by a Yodin Sensei. I don't know if the efect that bows a target player's personality is considered targeting the personality or only the player. Could you help me, please?
Asami targets a player, who then targets his own Personality. It's legal to use her under Yodin Sensei.
Perfect Cut
I was discussing this with a friend earlier, and something came up.
Will Yu still work in a battle where you use Trenches to save your army?
Yes.
Duel qstn.
If Daidoji Megumi is in a duel, and she is the challenger, and her opponent strikes, and she plays bend like a reed, what is her chi? 4, because the Bend was a focus that removed her trait bonus. 7, because the bend was only like a focus, and did not affect her trait bonus. What about if she is challenged and plays Strike With No Thought
Reactions to striking which add as a focus are not actually focused, so Megumi would not lose her extra Chi.
If Kyruko uses her bow to challenge ability,
She doesn't bow to challenge. She just challenges, once per turn. I'm going to keep answering your question, though, since it will apply to other cards.
and it is accepted, can you use a shugenja to cast Double Chi, or was the bowing to early in the process? It could be that she was bowed to create the duel, and the new focuing rules do not allow Double Chi to be cast, or it could be that the Casting is in responce to her bowing, and she is still a valid target.
There are no new focusing rules. Do you mean new targeting rules? Those will prohibit casting Double Chi. Double Chi is cast after your Personality enters a duel, which is distinctly after the challenge is issued. Kyruko had to (theoretically) bow to issue the challenge.
With the new duel Iaijitsu Lessons, it says that all items give no bonuses and have no effect for the purposes of that duel. What about items that give traits like Double Chi? Atarasi's Armor gives the trait until the end of the turn.
It's still one of the item's effects. It would not apply during the duel.
If you used Carriers to move it, would you be able to give two people the traits in the same turn, or would that be prohibited?
It could be moved but its Open ability cannot be used more than once per turn, by its own text.
What about the 6 gold cost item that grants Double Chi while attached?
It would clearly not grant Double Chi during an Iaijutsu Lesson.
Rule_of_presence & useless Reactions
Reactions that SEEMS to be useless (or almost useless- au) with Rule_of_presence affecting reactions (please complete): (Jeff & Zen, correct the list)
- Plea of the Peasants - Mystic Ground (au) - Palace of the Emerald Champion (au) - Kakita Yoshi (Exp. 2) - Surrender - The Song of Blood
These are all unaffected by the new rules on Reactions because they occur during the Resolution Segment. They are just as legal as before.
1) This new rule is for clarification? to clarify what?
To make it easier to remember which rules apply to which types of actions.
2) Please I need an example of a legal Battle action played during a non-battle action segment.
I don't believe there are any. I'm not sure why you're asking this.
Ginawa XP4 & An Empty Victory
If An Empty Victory is in effect can a player who has one of the highest two honor totals use his Ginawa and then say, "Oops. Can't attack. Sorry." Does An Empty Victory stop him from using the ability on Ginawa?
No. Losing your attack is an effect, not a cost, of Ginawa's action.
connecting walls & more
How works connecting walls under Kaiu sensei? (6,4,4,6?)
During attacks, each Connecting Walls' traits are active as though it's at all of your Provinces. If you have more than one Province, each single Wall will add +4 to your end Provinces and +6 to the rest. (If you have only one Province you only get +2 since you'll only have one Wall.)
Playing with a 7 Province Streng Stronghold (Great walls for example), a Moat attached to my last province. My oponent attacks with Uragirimono (3F) and Ogre outlaw (6F). Moat reduces forces to 2F and 5F.
1- May I play "ring of earth", at the end of the resolution segment, or he never had sufficient force?
He never had sufficient Force. No Ring.
2- If I defend with a personality with the "Hammer of Earth" attached, may I use the reaction to play the ring?
No.
3- If "Heimin Village" is attached to the province, what's the new force for ogre outlaw, 3 or 2?
The active player gets to choose whether his Force is reduced to 3 first or reduced by 1 first, since the effects are tied.
4- Is the moat penalty considered a 'negative bonus' ?(I hope no)
It is not.
Some Dragon questions
Togashi Iroshi Dragon Clan Tattoo Artist Apprentice * Monk * Tattooed Limited: Bow to look at the top 5 cards in your Fate deck. You may discard a card from your hand to reveal one to the other players and put it im your hand if it is a Tattoo card, then place the remaining cards on the bottom of your deck.
questions on his usage: a) after I look at the top 5 can I replace them in any order?
No. You're only looking at them.
b) if there is no tattoo card can I show my opponent another card from the 5 discard something from my hand and put the remaining 5 at the bottom of the deck
No.
c) can I reorganise the order of anything I put the bottom
No.
I therefore would like to move that I can use Kyuden Hitomi's ability after using Hitomi Vedau's ability.
I disagree. Part of the cost of using Kyuden Hitomi is giving up one Fate card draw. If you can't draw, you can't give up a draw.
