Rules for 30 July 2001, Part 2

Zen Faulkes, sent 31 July 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

My travel plans got blown into tiny little unrecognizable pieces today. So instead of going to GenCon, I guess I'll just handle rules Q&A for a few more days while everyone else heads to the Milwaukee...

(Fwd) RE: (Fwd) [L5RINFO] [Dave, Jeff] Promo Legali ty at Gen C

Chiang-Tsu and the rest of the Ronin promos were distributed before Gold's release date. If they are not legal, why are the other Gold promos legal?

Probably because those particular cards were no distributed systematically. Those promo cards were only distributed in *very* limited supply to people whose koku orders could not be filled. It's not like they went out with a mailing, or in a magazine, or anything else. They were given out as gifts to a few people.

Last Archive update

(All the below scenarios will assume a player attacked his opponent with all of his unbowed personalities, against one province, and that province was the last battle to be resolved. The attacked player plays Counterattack following the last battle)

Is this correct? The player Counterattacking gets an opportunity to Rallying Cry off of his Counterattack before the player who made the initial attack does, since the Counterattacking players Rallying Cry is being played in response to the end of his Counterattack phase.

Correct!

Therefore, while the bowed out player is waiting to Rallying Cry off his initial attack phase, the Counterattacking player, should his hand be set up, be able to Counter/Rally/Counter, while the opponent who made the initial attack is bowed out.

No. A player can *NEVER* perform two Reactions to one single, given trigger without giving other players a chance to perform Reactions to that same trigger. Multiple Counterattacks by one player are both responding to the same trigger. The Defender can never perform two consecutive Counterattacks without the original Attacker getting an opportunity to play Rallying Cry in between them.

(Ignore who gets to play Rallying Cry at the end of the Counterattack, it's a distraction in this case.)

Is this also correct? The player making the initial attack will not be able to Counterattack since his Rallying Cry will be played as a Reaction to his Attack phase, and if he is Reacting to his attack phase, he is no longer able to React to his opponents ounterattacking his provinces.

Just to be sure I cover all the bases here, let me rephrase that question in two ways.

1) Is it *legal* for the original Attacker to play the Counterattack? Yes. Counterattack has no requirement that you must have units you can send.

2) Will the Attacker's Counterattack accomplish anything? Probably not. As you note, the Attacker's Personalities will be bowed while the Counterattack is resolving.

So, basically, what this ruling has done is set up a Counterattack phase with in an attack phase, that can't be reacted to by a bowed out, initially attacking army. Is this all correct?

I don't want to put it in such strong terms. There are probably going to be exceptions because the original Attacker is going to have opportunities to respond to the original Defender's Counterattack.

By and large, however, yes -- it is going to be *extremely* difficult for an Attacker to deal with a Counterattack *if* all his or her attacking units were in the one Province.

Will someone *offical* please fill in any of the particulars that I may have misunderstood.

Apart from the dual Counterattacks (you never get two Reactions without other players getting one!), I believe you have it correct. Thanks for those good questions; I hope I've cleared up some problems.

gold senseis????

[Sensei are] one of the elements that was removed from the game.

That may or may not be true. Jeff Alexander hasn't said one way or the other as to whether he plans to include sensei in future expansions.

Rules for 29 July 2001

Do you know if there will be either Sensei or Ancestor cards included in the Perfect Cut expansion?

Since the set hasn't been released yet, even if I knew, I couldn't tell you. That there are already Gold-legal Ancestors, however, seems a good indication that there will be more.

Gold Questions

Can you play all personalties in a Strict Gold tournament as long as there "Soul of" has been printed. A local TO told me no, but I read in the rulebook you can.

You must have misread the rulebook, because there's no such statement in it. But it turns out to be almost right.

Old Personalities who have "Soul of..." counterparts are being allowed as legal *PROXIES* for the new cards in Gold Edition. This means that you can use them as a substitute, but you must play them as though they were the Gold Personalities with the new text *IN ALL WAYS*. For example, Kitsune Shudo has the Yoritomo's Alliance trait, but the "Soul of Kitsune Shudo" does NOT. Thus, if you use Kitsune Shudo as a proxy for the new guy, he's NOT Yoritomo's Alliance.

Do followers under a from a Street to Street add their force for purposes of crushing attack? Either way, why?

No -- they are not in units (card text). On-line Gold rulebook: "The Attacker and the Defender add up the Force totals of all of their units to determine the winner of the battle. The Force of a unit is the Force of its Personality plus the total Force of all of its Followers. ... These rules hold true any time at which you need to know a unit’s or army’s Force total, not just during battle resolution."

Is "Evil feeds upon itself" legal?

Not for the Gold environment. See Rules Archive.

Are Hida Roteki (the 4 gold shujenga, can't spell it without it in front of me) and the crane that are listed in the rule book legal?

No. Cards were changed at the last minute. A correct list is available on Steel and Iron.

How do I get on the scorpion list?

Try searching: http://groups.yahoo.com

Do regions attach if you are using the wind that cycles cards?

Not quite sure what you're asking. On-line Gold rulebook: "You *MUST* bring a Region into play if you legally can and if it has no cost." The only time Regions enter play is the Events Phase, however; if you flip one up after that, it'll sit in the Province until the next Events Phase.
