replies to 10-14 July 2001
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Rules for 11 July 2001
Revering the Past. If you don't have a personality in play when this event resolves but you do have one in your fate deck, what do you do? Do you still fetch the ancestor? Do you then discard it or do you put it in your hand?
See Rules Archive. Get the Ancestor.
OK. I take it that means that the line in the archive is supposed to mean the Ancestor goes into your hand. It's not very clear :-)
Revering the Past * You only need to retreive an Ancestor from your deck to avoid the honor loss. [JA, 25 January 2001]
And a second question. If the Ancestor is in your fate hand but not in your deck, you would still lose the honor?
If you don't get it from your deck, you lose honor. If all your Ancestors are already in your hand, you can't get one from your deck. Ergo, you will lose honor. Q.E.D.
New Promo
2) She can gain /each/ ability once per game. As the final sentance states: Each benifit may only be gained once per game with this ability.
I know that. I'm just not sure how useful it would be. The main problem I have with her is that she's going to be Cavlary only once a game, and that's a strange one in a Unicorn deck.
So? She's aligned with Unicorn Clan because they won the Legacy of the Naga tournament, not because it was thought she'd be more useful in their decks than in others'.
Akasha ruling question
Hey, does Akasha's ablilty to make a ranged two attack bow her?
Yes, by rulebook definition.
On par with Go Home. Bowed.
Rallying Cry says that it prevents your personalities from bowing from the combat. They dont bow and then straighten. So I would say that if they play Counterattack before they bow from combat they are still straight and can defend against the CA.
Except that when Counterattack is played first, it must be resolved first. That's the way actions work in this game. So none of the units have been prevented from bowing yet. This is the way these two cards have always worked, by the way. It's just that now, CA may be played first more often.
On par with Go Home. Bowed.
Personally I think it's a lot more broken that White Shore Plains was - grrrrr.......
Alex PS OK, so the 3 focus was a little too good, but 4 gold is just silly - 3 lets the Lion use it, sort of, 5 matches up OK-ish with a House of Contracts, but 4 restricts it to Crane, Dragon and Toturi's Army. Arg!
Are you playing a No Moving Parts Lion deck? I can't think of any other reason for you to be saying, "This card costs more than my Stronghold makes, so I can't ever play it."
On par with Go Home. Bowed.
The way I see it (which differs from the official rules) is that battles at provinces are contained within an overall attack phase. Since they are contained, the battle at the last province must end (with a chance to rally) BEFORE the overall attack phase ends (with a chance to Counterattack), even if nothing happens between the last battle and the end of the attack phase. See diagram:
|Battle 1| |Battle 2| |Battle 3| |Battle 4| | +--------+ +--------+ +--------+ +--------+ | +---------------------------------------------+ Attack Phase
I think this is easier to understand than making the end of the last battle and the end of the attack phase simultaneous. With this interpretation, timing issues on Rallying Cry / Counterattack would not come up.
Yes they would. The end of the last battle and the end of the Attack Phase are *not* simultaneous. Timing issues arise from the fact that Counterattack is a reaction to the end of the last battle and not to the end of the Phase. Since Rallying Cry is a reaction to the end of *a* battle, the two conflict when the battle in question is the last one.
Oni no Jimen no Oni
Oni no Jimen/Jimen no Oni was at one time going to be included in Gold. Anybody know if he ended up making it in?
He's not in.
Rules Question
Setting: A really big final battle, Unicorn vs Scorpion at the last Scorpion province.
The Players: Moto Gaheris experienced with attached scout and ancestral sword and a whole host of attacking Unicorns, Bayushi Kachiko exp 3 and many others defending.
Bayushi Kachiko exp3 Ho/Co/PH: -/10/2 Scorpion Clan Seductress. Experienced 3. Unique. Kachiko will only join a Scorpion player. Reaction: Discard a card from your hand when a Battle action is played during a battle Kachiko is in. Cancel the action.
Moto Gaheris exp Ho/Co/PH: -/15/2 Unicorn Clan Champion. Moto Clan Khan. Cavalry. Double Chi. Exp. Unique. Gaheris will only join an Unicorn player. Opposing players cannot play Action cards during the Battle Action Segment of a battle containing Gaheris unless the action removes Gaheris from battle.
Scout Ho/Co/PH: 0/1/- Cavalry. An Attacker with a Scout in his army may play a terrain card before the Defender performs his first battle action.
Situation:
The scout causes Deadly Terrain to be played. If this is a battle action, then Kachiko can cancel it and the Scorpions are saved (sending Gaheris home and exterminating the remaining Unicorn army). If it is not a Battle Action, and/or Kachiko cannot cancel it, the Scorpions are unable to simultaneously destroy the terrain and remove Gaheris from the battle and die horribly beneath the hooves of the rampaging Unicorn host. YOU make the call... who will reign triumphant and who will die ignominiously.
The terrain is still a Battle action. Scout changes when it's played but not what sort of action it is. Thus, Kachiko can be used to discard a Fate card to cancel it. (Using Kachiko's ability is not considered to be "playing an Action card," irrespective of the type of card discarded.)
New player's question.
Does this action, since the stronghold says, 'instead of drawing a card, _add_ a card from under...', work with Hitomi Vedai? If you use his ability, you can't 'draw a card' in the End phase.
If you draw no cards in your End Phase, you cannot use Kyuden Hitomi's reaction to get a card from it "instead of drawing".
Rules Questions (Targeting and Reactions)
3) I apologize for being redundant, but this will seriously affect our play and start arguments: to be sure, as Feign Death targets (this assumes the answer to (1) is yes), you can't use it on a bowed, dying Personality. Correct?
In addition to Zen's note, I'd also like to point out that it's not played until after the Personality dies, and cards in the discard pile are never considered bowed (p. 61).
Rules Question (Finding and Re-play)
It is quite possible for a Ring to get Finding'd in, get removed from play, then for that Ring to be played legitimately, however.
In that case, does the Ring count for victory?
If it's the same physical card, no.
Gold info
Second I have a rules question in open format can you build a deck with 3 Tsuburu no Oni and 3 Oni no Tsuburu.
Not a legal one, no. THEY'RE THE SAME CARD.
regional quandry....
if I have a region in play in a province where I turn over another region may I discard the original region and activate the region I just drew??? Or am I stuck with the original region??
"You cannot voluntarily discard cards or tokens." (p. 25) You're stuck.
Hida Rohetiki
Sorry if this has already been covered, but I haven't been able to read the list lately. Is Hida Rohiteki non-experienced gold legal?
No.
Dumb legallity questions
I am sure these have been asked before but if some one can just please anwer them for me: In a gold tournmenet can we use old versoin of new cards?
Yes. You have always been able to. You must, however, use opaque card sleeves if your deck has cards with mixed backs. (This is true for all L5R tournaments, not just Strict Gold.)
offering me Imerpail edition version of cards like imperial gifts for my gold edition versions. I would think the old ones would be more valuable, but is it because in a gold tourney we can only use the gold version of the card?
Also can we use the older versin of "Soul of,,,," people, like instead of using asahina kimita in a gold tourney can we use Asahina Tomo?
Yes, in Strict Gold tournaments, but he'll count *in every way* as Asahina Kimita.
Wind question
Is it legal to play without a Wind at all?
Yes.
"Soul of...." questions
I feel kinda silly asking these, it seems like it should be straightforward enough, I just want to make sure I understand this stuff 100% before I start running Gold tournaments locally.
OK. First the rulebook quote:
Gold Edition Rulebook, page 21: "The personalities count together against the per-deck card limit. If either Personality has multiple Experience levels, the "Soul of..." character counts only as the earlier Personality at the same level. "Soul of..." characters don't count as their named personalities for any game-play purposes except deck construction."
OK. The deck construction part is pretty clear, I can run 2 Matsu Hataki and 1 Matsu Turi. They are all played by the MRP version, which right now is Matsu Hataki from GE.
This is true in Open, Jade and Gold formats, correct?
Only in Gold formats would Turi count as Hataki. In Open, they'd count as printed because both are legal cards. In Jade, you can't use Hataki.
Now the part that confuses me is where it says: "If either Personality has multiple Experience levels, the "Soul of..." character counts only as the earlier Personality at the same level."
My take on this wording is that using Matsu Hataki as an example above, I can include in my deck:
any combination (up to 3) of Non-Exp. Matsu Hataki and Non-Exp. Matsu Turi and either Matsu Hataki exp. or Matsu Turi exp.
Correct.
But, I can only overlay an Exp. Turi on a Non Exp. Turi, or an Exp. Hataki on a non Exp. Hataki.
That's true only in Open. In Gold, any Turis you have are proxies for the equivalent Hataki, so you can overlay either Experienced card over either non-Experienced card.
Second question, on a totally unrelated topic... (heh), excactly how many cards are drawn with Campsite when being attacked. 1, or 1 per unit?
1 per unit, just like it says.
Question regarding Gold Souls and such...
I see that there are many 'Souls Of' and reprints of old cards out, but I would like to know if this will continue with future sets, or will Gold be the transition set from the old to the new, with all new personalities and such being unique unto themselves.
The "Soul of" mechanic is a basic-set-only thing. Expansions will have completely new cards.
