Rules for 28 June 2001

Zen Faulkes, sent 29 June 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

The Fallen Lion Fortress

If a player has brought during the game a shadowlands card but the card was destroyed and it is not in play when The Fallen Lion Fortress resolves. Does he loss honor?

Sure looks that way, doesn't it? Yes.

Question about bowed cards

Does Kikata's "The Sword" and Fortress of the Dragonfly affect play when they're bowed?

Absolutely. Traits are always "on."

A note to the Rules Archive

If a Personality changes controllers, he or she always enters play in the new controller's fief. This may cause a Personality to leave a battle (overriding effects prohibiting leaving the battle) or a duel (causing the duel to be abandoned without resolution).

If you read this, it seems that playing a Kolat Master will make the target personality to enter play again, so it could activate its entering into play effects. This isn't correct, is it?

No, it's not. The idea is that things go to their controller's fief by default when they enter play or switch controllers. I see the ambiguity, but I'm not immediately sure how to word it properly. I'll fix it, but I probably won't have a chance to do it for a week or so. More below.

Yokai/Ancestor Question

is Yokai no Junzo destroyed if the personality it is attached to loses the Shadowlands Trait?

No. That's a triple A question: "Asked, answered, archived."

Factions and Smactions

factions/clans such as Toturi's Army/Mantis will be in Gold Edition, but their strongholds won't be reprinted, thus making them not a legal faction/Clan to play?

Rules Archive, Clan Affiliations: "The list of game-defined clans does not change depending on the tournament format. I.e., a clan defined in the rulebook can be named (for Alliance, e.g.) regardless of whether than clan has a legal stronghold in a particular tournament format. [JA, 13 October 2000]"

what of the Ratlings? I haven't seen their stronghold on the reprinted Gold Edition list.

All Heroes of Rokugan cards and strongholds were printed with both the Jade and Gold kanji, thus making it legal in Four Winds storyline simulation format, a.k.a. "Gold."

This is probably going to be my last daily rules post for a week or so. I'm going to be travelling over the next week, and may not have many chances to check my e-mail.

This trip is part of preparation for a transcontinental move, which has been whole lots of no fun. (Moving to Australia and back was easier.) Like Jeff Alexander, I'm going to be looking for a new place to live. (I find the symmetry of our situations oddly appropriate.) It's a bummer that this trip falls on the Gold pre-release weekend, but not much I could do about it. After I get back, I have a one day break before driving up to Calgary to run the Western Canada Kotei.

Speaking of the Western Canada Kotei, I snagged a very nifty prize for that event today. :) I hope to see a few of you at our little regional tourney. For more info, head to: http://www.planet.net.au/~zfaulkes/westcankotei.html

And speaking of Gold Edition, I'll be doing my best to get the Rules Archive up to speed to include Gold as soon as I can. There's a lot of "most recent printing" information that has to get included, but that's actually the easiest bit and should be done soon. The *hard* bit will be combing through the Archive to eliminate rulings made obsolete by rules changes in Gold Edition. Be patient with me -- I'm hoping it'll be done in the first third of July.

Play nice while Jeff and I are away, apartment hunting. I'll leave you in Vaughn's more-than-capable hands to look after your questions in the meantime.
