Rulings for 18 January 2001

Jeff Alexander, sent 22 January 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Sorry about the slight delay on this post. Not only do I get the list in digest mode, but I've been sick the past few days and haven't had the urge to do much of anything except lie in front of the fire.

Question about Nightmare

Nightmare at first glance seems to make a card that is immune to fear now vunerable to fear. At second glance it appears to say that fear action now does affect the cards immune to fear. Thus a fear 4 with nightmare targeting a unit contianing naga warlord and naga token would bow both of them. However a unit contianing elite light infantry (which is immune), spearman (which is not immune) and Matsu Gohei (who is not immune) targeted by fear 4 with nightmare would bow the spearman and the elite light infantry but not Matsu Gohei. Am I reading this right?

Nightmare's effects are in addition to the normal effects of Fear.

Cancellation and Negation Esoterica

The "never happened" clause was peripheral and generally ignored by most people, indeed most such actions can't be gotten back because costs are not refunded (a central idea). Anyway this idea gradually got into the archive even though it was an arcane footnote that rarely applied.

Obviously our recollections differ. It didn't gradually creep into the archive, I *put* it there, because that's the way that I and, more importantly, Dave Williams envisioned things working at the time. I'm not sure how peripheral it really is or how many people ignored it.

2 Regions and Wide Terrain

Another question where people want to see print.

If I have 2 sorrows paths next to each other and I play wide terrain, since it's considered one province, is there a problem caused with 2 regions there? Do they have to destroy 2 units (or 6 cards)?

I don't see a problem with it and I think the attacker should destroy 2 units.

You don't fully "merge" the two Provinces, by the text on Wide Terrain. You don't count Regions and Fortifications on the adjacent Province as being on the current one. The other Sorrow's Path wouldn't matter.

Flee the Darkness vs Hitomi exp. 3

Many of the most important words in this discussion do not seem to mean what the common understanding of them has always meant.

Therefore, it is difficult to know which words on which cards are subject to reinterpretation. Some words in the glossary have clearly been given different meanings, but other words now also mean something else. How can one who does not have access to this forum know this?

It's in the rulebook, just not in the Glossary. Look under "Canceling Actions and Negating Effects".

3. "Once per turn" is not a cost, though using up your chance for a Battle/Open action is (Vaughn's ruling)

Vaughn no longer has the authority to make that ruling, IIRC, and that is the very topic on which we disagree.

Vaughn's and Zen's status as official representatives on this list do not cease when they are not serving active duty.
