Shameful Rebuke v. Consideration

L5R CCG Rules board, 8 August 2012 to 9 August 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Consideration Open: Choose your performing unbowed Tactician and target another of your Personalities: Give the Personality +3F. After the next time this turn another player's action targets him, negate its effects.

Shameful Rebuke Battle: In turn order, starting with you, each player targets and moves one of his Personalities at the current battlefield home. Then, choose a player who loses Honor equal to the number of Personalities this moved.

I'm at an opposed battle. My opponent has one dude who has been the target of Consideration. I attempt to play Shameful Rebuke. What happens?

a) All of the effects are negated. My personality and his personality remain at the battlefield. b) Does my personality go home and his stay at the battle? The Consideration target occurs after I target my personality, so theoretically he should go home.

Firstly, the "target and move home" for each player is done as a pair. So, normally, you target and move home your Personality, then your opponent does the same. Then the honour loss occurs.

Secondly, negation does not undo previous instantaneous effects, such as movement or honour losses (although it will suppress existing stat bonuses and penalties).

So, the effective outcome of Shameful Rebuke in this situation will be, you target and move home your Personality, your opponent targets his Consideration'd Personality, whose movement home is negated. Then, the 1 point honour loss is negated.

Is there a reason that Shameful Rebuke doesn't follow the normal steps for resolving an action?

The way I see it is that when Player A plays Shameful Rebuke the following would happen:

Player A announces Shameful Rebuke There are no performers so Player A does not have to choose performers Then mandatory targets are chosen. Both Player A and Player B choose their targets. At this point, Player B's personality that was Consideration'd has been targetted and the entire effects of Shameful Rebuke are negated. Then costs are paid, but there are no gold costs or costs for the action Then Shameful Rebuke resolves, with all of its effects being negated.

Since Consideration does not say "negate the effects on him" but instead says "negate the effects" it should negate all effects of the action? Or am I reading it wrong?

If Consideration only blocks the effects on Player B's target, then how is it different for this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98414&p=1298613&hilit=scandalous#p1298613 ?

The reason that Alex is correct above is that Shameful Rebuke's targeting does NOT happen in the "Required Targeting" step of taking an action.

As of EE, all required targeting for said step is located in an action's contraints (if any), between its first colon and its second.

The targeting of Shameful Rebuke, however, is not located there and is thus not done at that step. It occurs as part of the effects of the action, in the sequence Alex described.
