Control and Enemy

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 April 2012 to 19 April 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

So an enemy is defined as:

In a battle and/or Attack Phase, if you are the Defender or a defending ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Attacker or an attacking ally, armies on the attacking side, and units or cards in units controlled by an attacking player.

Conversely, if you are the Attacker or an attacking ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Defender or a defending ally, armies on the defending side, and units or cards in units controlled by an defending player.

In a phrase such as "an enemy card," "enemy" does not refer to cards outside of units, but can refer to units outside the current battlefield and cards in them.

Examples: Terrains and Regions are not in units, so are not enemy cards.

A Personality you somehow control in an enemy army is still “enemy” to you. (bold mine)

If you somehow change sides in a battle, your perspective on who is "enemy" and who is "friendly" changes immediately.

So if I took control of a personality he would immediately change board positions (as stated here). However if I took control of a personality in mid battle that personality would still be an enemy to me (bolded) and I would not be able to use his/her abilities but my opponent still would. Is that correct?

Also, if that peronality would still be contributing force to my eneimes army because " 'enemy' describes a player who is the Defender or a defending ally, armies on the defending side, and units or cards in units controlled by an defending player. Is that also correct?

As far as I know, the only Personality whom you can control while in an enemy army is Ninube Ogoku.

Ok, here's a situation. Sachina took a personality from me and later I attack assigning 1 berserker and the Mantis player assigns my personality to defend. During that battle I use intimidation to bring Sachina to the battlefield and promptly kill her on my next action. So while I regain control of my personality he is still considered an enemy, correct?

When you (re-)take control of your Personality, he goes into your army, as described under Physically marked card states, Card control: When a non-attachment card changes control, it goes to its new controller’s home, or to its new controller’s side of the battlefield if it was at a battlefield before changing control. This is not considered movement.
