City of Blood

L5R CCG Rules board, 27 March 2012 to 28 March 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

According to the EE Special Wording Rules, it appears that City of Blood now works as one assumes was intended. That is, you can benefit from Kinuye's Garden and meet the conditions of Iuchiban Sensei on any Phoenix Clan Shugenja when bringing one into play, rather than just those with the base Bloodspeaker keyword. I recall this being an issue in the past, but I must ask if my assessment is correct?

Your Phoenix Clan Shugenja have Bloodspeaker.

Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 4 Gold if you are a Phoenix Clan player and paying for a Bloodspeaker Personality.

Your non-Bloodspeaker Personalities in and out of play have +1 Gold Cost.

When referring to the relationship between a player and a card or cards, possessive terms refer to a card in play controlled by the player, or a card out of play owned by the player.

The use of "your" does not override the fact that effects normally cannot affect cards that are out of play.

However the rules on effects in and out of play do state that effects affect your cards while they are in an entering play area. Since Personalities enter the entering-play area before you pay for them, both Kinuye's Garden and Iuchiban Sensei will treat your Phoenix Clan Shugenja as having the Bloodspeaker trait while buying them.

Embarrassing!

After consulting with Roger and Jon, I'm sadly having to reverse the above answer as now being wrong, but it's because I "translated" the City of Blood trait improperly.

Fixing, and sorry for the error.
