Never beyond my reach

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 February 2012 to 15 February 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield, choose your performing unbowed Kensai, who may be at an adjacent battlefield to the current one if he has a Weapon attached: Range 6 Attack (against a target at the current battlefield).

Opponent assigns 1 personality to province [1]. I assign 1 Kensai with weapon to province [2] for defense. Opponent chooses my battlefield first, then we both pass and it resolves. then he picks his, can i still use never beyond my reach even tho my kensai's battle resolved? i wanna say yea cause all i can remember is that battle resolution only sends home the attackers, and only negates all future movement not actions if im correct.

This isn't an "official" answer (you should ask this on the Rules Question forum, not the deckbuilding forum) but everything you said sounds right. Attackers go home, defenders remain. Just because the battle is over, your defender isn't "locked" out of performing actions.

EE Battles D.1

1. Return home: Regardless of who wins, loses, or ties in the battle, all attacking and allied units at its battlefield return home simultaneously; then, all units that returned home bow simultaneously.

Both the change in location and bowing are effects of the battle and the battle's resolution, even though they happen after resolution.

Surviving defending units remain at the battlefield, unless the Province was destroyed, in which case they return home simultaneously with any attacking units.

Returning home in this manner is not movement.

A Personality at an adjacent battlefield who has been in battle resolution there may still perform Never Beyond My Reach. The Second-Battle Rule only affects movement, not performing.

Note also that being in Battle Resolution doesn't negate any future movement. The Second-Battle Rule says: Before a unit that was in an attacking army at any point during a battle’s resolution moves to a battlefield during the same Attack Phase, the unit’s movement does not happen.
