Boastful Proclamation

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 January 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 10 January 2012

The scenario is this: on my previous turn, I have resolved Boastful Proclamation, and the province wasn't destroyed. My turn begins and I'm at 37 honor. Does the honor gain from Boastful kick in before i check to see if I win through an Honor Victory?

I seem to remember from back in Lotus that this was the case, but many things have changed since then.

Relevant Text:

Boastful Proclamation Unique If any other player controls a Personality, then at the start of your next turn, if this province still exists, permanently give it +3 strength and gain 3 Honor. Until your next turn begins, after battle resolution destroys this province, give each Personality in the attacking army a +1F token and the Attacker may draw a card.

Honor Victory: You win if you start your turn on 40 Family Honor or higher, gaining victory by securing control of the Imperial Court. (from the EE rules PDF)

Because both the gain from Boastful Proclamation and the check for an Honor Victory have the same timing (Step B, see here), the active player chooses which happens first.

You are the active player. Choose wisely.
