A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Koshin Keep Recon Reaction: After engaging: You have Reconnaissance at the current battlefield. Until this battle ends, your Ranged Attacks that do not destroy their target have the additional effects, "reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack action that may only target the same card."
Do the additional effects apply to the ability or the action? The 'Order of Effects' section of the CE comp rules imply that additional effects apply to abilities and not actions (Additional effects that are granted to an ability appear in the order of resolution after the ability's base effects. [ADDED 6 May 2011]), so if I have a personality with an ability "any number of times per turn: ranged 1 attack", and my first use of that ability does not destroy its target, are the additional effects "reduce force, may take additional ranged attack action that may only target same card" now part of that ability until the battle ends? Or does it modify the game rules on ranged attacks? Using the CE comp rules section again, would the rulebook ranged attack effect sentence now say “Target a Follower or a Personality without Followers in the current enemy army. If its Force is equal to or less than X, destroy it. reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack action that may only target the same card."?

A Ranged Attack effect is defined in the Glossary like this: In an effect, “Ranged X Attack” (where X is a number known as the strength of the Ranged Attack) is shorthand for “Target a Follower or a Personality without Followers in the current enemy army. If its Force is equal to or less than X, destroy it.”
Koshin Keep adds "If this did not destroy the target, reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack action that may only target the same card," to those effects.
