Soul of a Soul of

L5R CCG Rules board, 4 January 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

So, Bayushi Irezu is a Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai which means we can use Kwanchai as a legal proxy for Irezu. However Bayushi Kwanchai is the Soul of Bayushi Tangen.

Irezu = Kwanchai = Tangen

So can I use Tangen as a legal proxy for Irezu?

Per the Emperor Edition rulebook, page 116, "“Soul of” Personalities are equivalent to the older card for deck construction purposes. In a game, you may use the older card as a proxy for the “Soul of” version, but you must inform the other player of any differences in stats or wording between the two."

This definition does not take into account any other cards which may also have "Soul of" relationships with the original version of the card. Therefore, as Bayushi Irezu is the Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai, you may only use copies of Bayushi Kwanchai as a proxy for Bayushi Irezu.

I just want to clarify. referencing Soul of a Soul of I just wanted to clearify this specifically is in reference to where a card is the soul of a card that is the soul of another card. But not to two cards who are the soul of the same card, right? Like because since you remove "soul of Tengen" via the rules of 'soul of' they are no longer a valid soul of proxy link?

The instance where it is different (and I care) Tsuruchi Nobumoto has "soul of Mukami" he counts as Mukami for purposes of deck construction. Tsuruchi Isas counts as Mukami for purposes of deck construction. quoted for reference

“Soul of” Personalities are equivalent to the older card for deck construction purposes.

So if Tsuruchi Nobumoto is equivalent to Mukami for purposes of deck construction, and Tsuruchi Isas is equivalent to Mukami for purposes of deck construction. So this is still good, right? or is it specifically that it must be the older proxies for the newer, not the newer proxies for the older (enabling proxy for the newer) so Nobumoto can not be a proxy for mukami for purposes of a proxy for Isas?

You may only use the "Soul of" listed on a card as the proxy for that card.

Therefore, you may use Mukami as a proxy for Tsuruchi Isas. You may not use Tsuruchi Nobumoto as a proxy for Tsuruchi Isas, as Isas is not a Soul of Tsuruchi Nobumoto.
