Legacy: Imperial Palace of Fu Leng

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 December 2011 to 28 December 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Imperial Palace of Fu Leng reads: Your Stronghold produces 3 more Gold when paying for a Shadowlands card. You cannot gain or lose Honor. Your Personalities will not swear fealty. Your cards cannot perform or be targeted by Political actions. You may not bring non-Shadowlands Personalities into play.

(emphasis mine) Apparently many people waive the bolded trait by using Tuf-Tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein. However, both these holdings give the Shadowlands keyword during (or more accurately, after) payment. According to the rules wiki, restrictions on Personalities entering play are checked before payment (step B for entering play restrictions, step C for payment).

According to this, would it be legal for a player using Imperial Palace of Fu Leng to bring into play a Personality without the base Shadowlands keyword using Tuf-Tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein? My guess is "no", but the only result of my forum search was an unanswered question and I'd like to have it official. Thank you in advance.

Other relevant card texts: Tuf-tuf Sake House Lose 3 Honor. Bow this card: Produce 3 Gold. Lose 1 Honor. Bow this card: Produce 4 Gold when paying for a non-Shadowlands Human. Dishonor him and permanently give him the Shadowlands trait. Lose 1 Honor. Open: Target a Shadowlands Human. He and all his Followers gain the Cavalry trait.

Corrupt Jade Vein Lose 2 Honor. Bow this card: Produce Gold equal to 2 plus the number of Shadowlands Personalities you control without the printed Shadowlands trait. If this pays for a Personality, permanently give him the Shadowlands trait.

You may not use Tuf-tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein to bring a non-Shadowlands Personality into play for The Imperial Palace of Fu Leng, for the reason stated: the Personality would only gain Shadowlands after the restriction had been checked.

So I saw this ruling.

And was curious why the Good Faith Rule doesn't apply in this case, but does apply in situations like...

Ikoma Ayumu + Control the Board.

What is different about these two situations with regard to the Good Faith Rule that allows one but not the other?

Good Faith doesn't apply to this situation. The sequence of play simply doesn't allow it.

The Personality in question will only gain Shadowlands AFTER the restriction of the Stronghold is checked.

In Ayumu's case, he's straightening before the performance restriction is checked.
