Never Beyond My Reach

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 December 2011 to 14 December 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I just wanted clarification from this action since a question came up during play.

Can this be performed by the Kensai at home to shoot a personality at the current battlefield? The issue was that you needed presence to play this action if you are not at an adjacent battlefield, even though it states that you can play the action "even if you control no units at the current battlefield".

Scenario: >Cavalry attackers move to a province with no opposition, battle is resolved at the contested province. >Defender has an unbowed Kensai with a weapon attached at home, and with first action attempts to play "Never Beyond My Reach" to shoot the contesting 5F Cavalry personality. >Claim is made that Kensai is not at an adjacent battlefield, and that conditions are not satisfied.

Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield, choose your performing Kensai, who may be at an adjacent battlefield to the current one if he has a Weapon attached: Range 6 Attack (against a target at the current battlefield).

Thank you.

No. In order to perform this action, a Kensai must be either at the current battlefield (Rule of Location), or at an adjacent battlefield to the current one if he has a Weapon attached (card text). Home is not a battlefield, so it is not "an adjacent battlefield to the current one".
