How to resolve Aroru's (xp2) ability?

L5R CCG Rules board, 29 October 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Can somebody please enlighten me how to resolve aroru's ability?

Does it proceed in this scenario?

A. Announcing the Action (Battle) B. Required targeting (Choose targets immediately for the range attack even if I don't resolve the first effect of Aroru's ability) -Other players may still take reactions at this point(change target or reduce range strength). C. Paying costs D. Actions resolution (No reactions for the opponent) E. Action ends

or with this scenario?

A. Announce the Action b1. Required targeting -since the first effect of the ability doesn't require targeting, I don't target any of the opponents legal targets. c1. Pay costs d1. Resolve first effect.

The inability to React is the first effect of the action, so it technically begins after that first effect is applied

b2. required targeting for the second effect. (Range 5 attack) -At this point, effect of the first part of aroru's ability is active and the it is at this point that no other player may take reactions. c2. Pay costs d2. Resolve second effect E. Action ends

From what I understand, I have to resolve each effect as they are written in aroru's ability.

How is it possible to play Outer walls or redirecting the initial target possible and the death negation not possible as stated by macbeth in this links. viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94587 viewtopic.php?f=59&t=93307&p=1234632&hilit=aroru+xp2#p1233941

Can somebody please enlighten me how to resolve aroru's ability?

Does it proceed in this scenario?

A. Announcing the Action (Battle) B. Required targeting (Choose targets immediately for the range attack [even if I don't resolve the first effect of Aroru's ability]) -Other players may still take reactions at this point(change target or reduce range strength). C. Paying costs D. Actions resolution (No reactions for the opponent, and then Ranged Attack either does or doesn't destroy the target, depending on strength versus Force comparison) E. Action ends

Under CE rules, the above sequence is the correct one. I also added the other effect of the action in Step D, bolded and underlined above.

I hope that answers your question, although I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what the part I bracketed and underlined in Step B above means exactly. If you meant, more accurately, "even though I haven't yet resolved the first effect of Aroru's ability yet", then yes, that too is correct.
