Greetings,
I've been away from the game for around a decade and am excited to be back. I've trolled many of the clan boards which have previewed the cards transitioning to EE and have a question about Cursed Relic. On the boards, many people have stated the expectation that the chi penalty induced by the relic goes away at end-of-turn. But in reviewing the Official Celestial Edition Rules, I found the following excerpt which seemed to indicate otherwise:
Continuous traits such as “You may not gain Honor” or “Your Samurai Personalities have +1F” do not contain a trigger.
While their card is in play, continuous traits apply their effects. Continuous traits do not have a duration, and do not resolve or have a resolution. They are “always on.”
In general, I know that force/chi bonuses go away at end-of-turn. And I recognize that in general chi penalties that are intended to persist beyond the current turn have been previously manifested and described on their creating card as tokens (which also provides a recognized in-game means of tracking the change when a card goes out-of-play). The Cursed Relic does not create tokens and so if it were interpreted to have its penalty persist beyond end-of-turn, the inclination of many players would be to add tokens to the card to manage each successive change - which might create confusion about what is/is not a 'token' in terms of game mechanic.
In any event, I suppose this question goes to the intent of the designers and how that meshes with the existing rules. What's the bottom-line verdict? Do the penalties from this item persist beyond end-of-turn?
Much obliged,
-Brett
