Reconnaissance

L5R CCG Rules board, 21 September 2011 to 27 September 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I checked the L5R rules wiki and it doesn't seem to have an entry there. Before the Dawn Sneak Peek Page says this is a shortened term for “If you have targeted the current battlefield’s province with a Recon action this turn”.

Recon Reaction: After engaging, choose your performing unbowed Scout at the current battlefield: You have Reconnaissance there. Put a non-Unique Battle Strategy in your discard pile into your hand. After this battle ends, if you did not destroy the battlefield's province or an army, discard a card at random.

Does this target a province? Meaning, is the term "You have Reconnaissance there." mechanically equivalent to "Target a Province." (which is how older recon-enabling cards like Hidden Route are written)?

That's been fixed! http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_R#Reconnaissance

Does (Seeking the Truth) target a province?

No.

No. The spiffy new glossary entry specifically says, "does not imply targeting, although it may come from an action that explicitly targeted a province" (my emphasis).

EDIT: Answer directly above reversed, see below.

Since 'Reconnaissance' is now mechanically different from the Recon keyword, does this mean that Disrupting Communication will not trigger a random discard on a province targeted by Kyuden Hida XP? Hiruma Akio XP not giving force bonuses to Kyuden Hida XP's attached followers?

Battle: Bow your performing Scout and target an enemy card: Bow it. The enemy leader discards a card of his choice, or a random card if you have Reconnaissance.

Your Followers at Akio's location have +1F while you have Reconnaissance.

Recon Reaction: After engaging, target the current battlefield's province: Create and attach a 0F Scout Follower to each of one to three of your Personalities in your current army. Remove those Followers from the game after the battle ends.

On the reverse side, how about the interaction between Seeking the Truth and Hiruma Akio Basic? Since Reconnaissance is not targeted, Akio's ability cannot be used?

After this battle ends, if you did not destroy the battlefield's province or an army, discard a card at random.

Battle: If this battlefield's province has been targeted by a Recon action this turn: Bow a target enemy card without attachments.

This also extends to all the other new reconnaissance-old recon interactions. Does the “If you have targeted the current battlefield’s province with a Recon action this turn” clause still apply (currently not on the rules wiki, but likely not needed anymore for EE)?

The Glossary entry for Reconnaissance has been brought in line with the Before the Dawn Sneak Peek Page:

Having Reconnaissance is a state that a player can be in at a particular location, and can be granted two ways: A player has Reconnaissance at a particular battlefield if he or she has targeted the battlefield's province this turn with a Recon action.Reconnaissance can be granted explicitly by card effects. For example, a player can have Reconnaissance at none, all or some of the battlefields in existence during a battle. Reconnaissance grants no benefits by itself. However, other card effects may depend on whether or not a player has Reconnaissance at a particular location. In addition, the reverse of the first bullet above is also true; if an effect grants you Reconnaissance at a battlefield, you are considered to have targeted the battlefield's province with a Recon action that turn. Reconnaissance is also mechanically different from the Recon keyword, although in practice, an effect that grants Reconnaissance will often come from a Recon card.

Thus, Seeking the Truth will allow, eg, Hiruma Akio's ability to be used.

I have to apologize for that one, i was already thinking in EE mode when I composed that entry ...
