L5R CCG Rules board, 25 August 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hey there! Tried searching for this card, and nothing came up, so I'll just pose this situation:

Never Beyond My Reach Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield, choose your performing Kensai, who may be at an adjacent battlefield to the current one if he has a Weapon attached: Range 6 Attack (against a target at the current battlefield).

Let's say I have a Kensai without weapons at home. Is he still eligible for the range 6 at the current battlefield? And when 'adjacent battlefield' is used, does the term mean the battlefield immediately to the left or right of the current battlefield? Or does it include the battlefield at the far end?

0 X 0 0 Left Current Right Far end

Thanks for answering! =)

For Kensai!

No, per the Rule of Location: "A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by, or explicitly perform, a Battle action." The Kensai explicitly performs Never Beyond My Reach so he must be at the current battlefield to do so. The card says there is an exception but your Kensai has no Weapon attached so it is not relevant here.

And when 'adjacent battlefield' is used, does the term mean the battlefield immediately to the left or right of the current battlefield?

Yes, the word 'adjacent' is used in its normal English meaning, with a precision from the glossary: "Battlefields associated with adjacent provinces are themselves adjacent."
