Awed Witness and Lying in Ambush

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 July 2011 to 8 July 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Awed Witness Battle: Choose your unbowed performing Personality: He challenges a target enemy Personality. Bow the duel's loser. The player who controls the duel's winner may create a 2F/2C/2PH Samurai Personality with that player's Clan alignment at the current battlefield.

Lying in Ambush Reaction: After the resolution of your Battle, Limited, or Open action that create a non-shadowlands personality: Create a 2F/2C/2PH Samurai Personality with your Clan alignment at the same location.

Can one react to Awed Witness with Lying in Ambush? I believe you cannot due to the fact that Awed Witness create a delayed effect. The action Awed Witness ends and a duel is created; the personality is not created until step I of the duel, at which point it is to late to react with Lying in Ambush. Thank you for your help!

Yes.

Awed Witness create a delayed effect.

What gives you that idea? The card does not say anything about any effects occurring at a future time, which is the definition of a delayed effect (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Delayed_effects).

Maybe I am misunderstanding how duels are created by actions. Does a duel action (i.e. Awed Witness) go through all of the action steps, then after step E. Action Ends, the duel is created or does the duel take place at some point during step D?

There is no rule that duels are delayed effects. They are just regular (albeit slightly lengthy) effects that occur in step D. There is no particular difference between that and something like "Bow it."

I'll just add that additional actions, battles and additional phases are delayed until after the end of the action or trait that created it - but, as Zen notes, these are the only things that are required to be delayed.
